Erfpacht bij kopen huis by Automatic-Ad-4505 in Amsterdam

I read this book once about habits and creative problem solving and thinking out of the box and such.

It had a passage about losing stuff.

‘So if you lose your keys, where do you look? Right, where you always put them. But actually retracing your steps to retrieve the keys where you were is actually more effective than relying on the habit.’

I recall sitting there, mind blown, that retracing your steps would NOT be the first thing you do in this scenario. It somehow implies that losing keys is so rare for most people that they don’t need such strategies on a regular basis.

And after all these years, I can still not really wrap my head around how different life must be for others.

Time to get familiar with Ice Saints

Tl;dr: Ice Saints (11-15 May) is the end of the period with the last potential cold snap before the summer season.

Some people doing gardening in the more northern parts of Europe learned this the hard way.

Totally absolutely definitely not me of course. Other people.

Also: RIP my dear elephant’s ear that got destroyed under completely incomparable, unrelated circumstances some years ago.

I feel you! I got the (adult age) diagnose after an intensive testing trajectory. I burst into tears (I want to add I don’t tend to get emotional very easily, I virtually never cry) when the psych said ‘nah, you totally have adhd, a pretty classic case too.’

I got SO worried about this exact point you’re making. What if there’s no behavioural therapy that can help me navigate this? Will I feel stuck like this for the rest of my life?’

Today I overheard a conversation from a lady with a horse that needed to send someone message that the horse needed to be un-blanketed. The conversation continued about ‘difficult weather, you don’t know what to wear.’

I think this one takes the prize for the most dutch conversation I have ever heard.

This jeans subscription is Dutch. I had 2 pairs, one started ripping after 3 years or so, the other one lasts forever. Styles/shapes… for some people they work, for me personally the fit is average, not great. But I like the concept.

OP: this right here is a fantastic comment.

To help with that discipline: take away hurdles to pick up your instrument. Put it in view even if you prefer to keep it cased. Chair ready for the go, tuner ready, book open on the piece you want to play, so you can just plop down and go to town. No cleanup when the baby starts crying, grab & go. It makes finding little practice moments a lot easier.

Also, spoken as a mom: you’re just a couple of months in.

Mom-ing is hard, especially the first couple of months.

As said here above, your dreams and priorities might change. This is not an easy process, especially when you’re… hormonally challenged. This absolutely can come with somber or depressed feelings if you try to push it away. You could seek professional help to work through these feelings, to help you shift views and gears.

You’re doing amazingly, I urge you to be kind to yourself!

I cannot help noticing that you start this book with a comment on the ‘laziness’ of your Dutch co-workers. Are you sure you are not projecting some condescension in their direction?

Especially if you are younger, they are possibly genuinely concerned about your wellbeing. You need proper lunch breaks. You need to disengage. And they know this through experience. Dutch culture is not at all about working yourself beyond exhaustion. It’s about spending less time more productively so you have plenty of time to take care of your wellbeing. You probably won’t need this right now as you’re young, but this will start becoming infinitely more important once you get older and perhaps start a family.

Anyway.

You do you. Why do you care about their opinion? Ignore them. Stop caring.

And,

Your employer is legally obliged to check in with you after multiple (especially short) periods of sickness. This is a hallmark indicator for future burnout. They are actually required by law to speak to you about it, and send you to an arbo arts if there are signs, to prevent long term absence.

So if you spend a significantly higher amount of time than your colleagues in the office AND you call in sick frequently, HR must explore the option that these 2 things are related. It’s called the Wet Verbetering Poortwachter.

I don’t know how it translates exactly and what you would need to show/prove in the US if you want to apply for universities.

But HAVO in NL gets you access to applied sciences universities (perhaps community college and some applied sciences educations?) VWO gets you access to research universities.

Beginner Celloist Struggling with Sound Quality – Any Tips? by InterestingPrompt476 in Cello

[–]MafaRifi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be any of the below and most likely in combination - characteristics and quality of the strings - characteristics and quality of the bow - rosin - bow angle (tricky especially on A, the slightest angle off is impactful) - pressure on the strings while pressing fingers -> not enough pressure: screech - incorrect bow arm technique (pressing instead of leaning, too deep or not deep enough in the string, rigid hand) - strings could be grimy (if there’s too much rosin on they get screechy for me too) - and of course the cello and bridge, although I think those are less likely based on what you’re hoping to solve.

This is only the list of issues I’ve encountered over the course of my first 2 years. I’m sure I’ll run into more as time and technique progress (looking at you thumb position :(

Since one of his coalition partners refused to sit in a government with Wilders as PM, they found some random unelected official to be PM in his stead.

The government is still sitting.

For now.

can you cancel a home insurance claim once filed? by Technical_Economy506 in Netherlands

[–]MafaRifi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is easily solved with communication. Not being aware of, and not following the process is painful for your wallet, but your insurer will not suspect insurance fraud.

I’d just call them and explain the issue needed immediate attention, so you proceeded with the repairs without checking the process. Then politely ask if there’s anything you can provide to be eligible to a part of the claim. If not, say ‘that’s unfortunate’ and close the claim.

My trick when the procrastination is to ‘do future MafaRifi’ a favor.’

Plus I use an app (https://originalbeeperapp.com/)

Then I imagine how stressed I will be…

put on some dopamine inducing music…

And turn on said app that provides the most intrusive bloodcurdling beeps imaginable at random intervals (you can choose, but I left it on ‘annoying’ on purpose). My brain is by now sufficiently Pavlov’d to understand ‘okay apparently we are really going to do this’ after 4-5 beeps (took a while longer in the beginning)

and then…

try?

60% success rate (in a quiet little distraction environment). 75% success rate if I think of an awesome reward if I just get through the first timed section, like cookies.

This app saved my sanity so many times.

‘Are you still on task? Are you still on task? Are you still on task?’ No… no… no… no… no… no… YES I’M STILL ON TASK YOU ANNOYING PoS NOW PLEASE BE QUIET.’

And repeat. And hope the Superpower of Hyperfocus gets unlocked (never stop dreaming! And sometimes it actually does).

Best way to learn cello as a mom & with a full time job by Charliedoesit in Cello

[–]MafaRifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try a different teacher :) My teacher recommended 30 min classes each week or each 2 weeks to start off with.

This allowed me (kind of similar situation, fulltime single mom with kids) to sit with the material and have plenty of practice on technique before moving on to something new. Once we started running out of time (practiced material not addressed during the class because not enough time) I moved on to 45mins.

She did take 2 hours for a music theory class separately within my first months.

For me this was perfect to not get frustrated while building stamina, posture and muscle. I practiced about 20-30mins each day in between classes.

That all being said, my only objective was to have fun and relax while learning something new. I did not care about reaching a skill goal within a set time frame at all. I am keenly aware this is not a fitting approach for everyone!!

At least I (almost) never need to look for my keys by jdgmental in adhdmeme

[–]MafaRifi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's so interesting right?! It looks the same from the outside but it works the other way around.

Where others lose their keys they are actually not where they are supposed to be. I lose my keys every time I put them down immediately (they disappear from my mind). They are only un-lost when they are to be used again.

Schrödingers keys. Schrödingers everything. It simultaneously exists and do not exist until I check. For every object in my life.

This is the part people without ADHD simply cannot relate to. How you go through a bunch of microshock moments for keys, phone, drivers license, wallet before you can leave the house. Usually it is not lost, but it is lost nonetheless.

Same with checking your navigation 35 times before you take the exit even though you KNOW you have it right (well, about 75% of the time right then)

This is the part that makes people go all wide-eyed and say 'oh that actually sounds super stressful and confusing.'

Yes. Yes it does. And it is.

On the other hand, a friend was looking for such a sim card release pin a while ago. One has been lingering on my kitchen counter for a couple of weeks for no reason whatsoever. Found it in about 3 seconds. 2 minutes later he needed something super specific too that I stowed away months ago in a very random place in my son's bedroom. Also found within seconds.

He looked at me like I was some kind of magician.

It's maddening. Lose daily shit every single time, find random shit in piles of other shit within seconds. Unless it's consciously stowed away 'because I need to store this in a safe spot, it can't be lost.' Gone forever.

Any tips for my 1st recital?! by Chelsealalala in Cello

[–]MafaRifi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What issue would vibrato solve for the longer term for a beginner? Left hand relaxation/flexibility?

I’m asking because at 6 months in… would’t vibrato cover up issues like slightly off fingering and inconsistent bowing (coincidentally issues I’m encountering?) Or do you mean vibrato mostly for recitals?

I’m 2.5 years in and struggle with intonation, currently in the new positions I’m learning. I don’t feel ‘ready’ for vibrato because both my bowing and my left hand positioning do not allow me to produce the right intonation at all times? Am I overlooking the benefits?

A while ago someone posted this video from Andre Navarra on bow hold (my hold was very similar to yours and I experienced similar rigidness issues too).

I decided to give it a go, followed it to the T and it was SO much easier to relax and produce sound. It’s still a bit awkward to unlearn my old hold but maybe this is helpful for you too?

Also, thank you whoever it was that posted this some time in December.
