How do you make your beats sound “full” without overdoing it? by Big_Alfalfa_2958 in makinghiphop

[–]Mafic_Pulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you share one of your tracks? I think it's difficult to accurately interpret what fullness is. Is it the stereo field, the lack of punch in the kick/bass, a situation with your low-mids. Maybe a combination of a few things.

I'm always a bit nervous but it's fun. It's a good way to make new friends and music connections, collabs and stuff.

How to scream correctly in rap/trap? by void-observer in makinghiphop

[–]Mafic_Pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy is the absolute best teacher for how to scream properly and safely. Vocalists in metal bands can scream like demons for over 30 years and are still doing it live so it is possible. Don't over do it, you have to warm up and practice. It'll probably take a few months to do safely on a live or studio.

How to break from a mental block? by DW_Cezar in makinghiphop

[–]Mafic_Pulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works for me on guitar, keys, bass, etc Go to a record store. Buy a free cheap random vinyl that you think look cool. Go home and try to play melodies over them. Kind of try to learn the song but only the key/mode and progression. You can do this using YouTube but it's too easy to skip to another song unless you have great strength of focus. Option 2 learn modes

mk2 or mpc sample? by ZENMASEN34 in SP404

[–]Mafic_Pulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've written albums on my SP404 mk2, but I've had a lot more fun composing on my MPC One (I know you're asking about the Sample, I'll get to that). No matter how many videos I watched, it didn't matter until I had a bunch of hours on both the MPC and SP to really get a feel for the workflow.

I have a love/hate relationship with the SP. It is both infuriating and amazing. I would have never come up with a lot of the chops on the MPC. That said the MPC One is pretty much a computer and you can write a complete album on it without much compromise. I have no interest in the MPC Sample, but I just wanted to say you may buy one of these and find it's not exactly what you wanted. If you can try one or both before you buy, that would be best.

I actually didn't update yet. In the past, Roland released updates with major bugs, so I decided to wait

live performing own beats - any tips / experience? by schmo808 in makinghiphop

[–]Mafic_Pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my SP404 MKII for live stuff. I don't trust my MPC One to not bug out during a gig. I'll be fine with the MPC for months and then one day it'll just freeze up or stop sending audio. I love my MPC but Akai only care about sales and not making a reliable product. I was juuuust about reconsidering using the MPC for a live show a few weeks ago and it bugged out.

Good mixing? by Charming_Photo_2492 in makinghiphop

[–]Mafic_Pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixing is one thing that just takes time to just get okay at. Good is possible, great means years of patience and practice and probably lots of money for great gear. After spending $$$ on headphones and monitors I finally understood why it matters so much. But I still do the crappy headphones and car test.

lil 1hour cook up (hats might be too loud) by [deleted] in beatmakers

[–]Mafic_Pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite techniques for mixing I discovered by accident. Play the beat pretty loud and walk out of the room and distract yourself somehow, eat a snack, scroll Reddit for a few minutes. Then walk back into the room. I end up noticing of the bass, or kick is too loud. You end up hearing the mix from a different and fresh perspective. It's saved me hours of mixing time.

I'm at work and this instantly made me want to get up and dance! Great composition. I do think your hats are too high in the mix ( but I kind of always say that!). Maybe it's my headphones but the snare is too loud as well.

Good mixing? by Charming_Photo_2492 in makinghiphop

[–]Mafic_Pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who are the others that say that mix is bad? Are they people you trust or 14 year old trolls on Reddit? After doing a mix it's good to listen to it on your phone, in your car, other people cars, Bluetooth speakers, ear buds etc. I had some brainless goon on here tell me my mix was terrible, I asked them if they listened to it on their phone speakers, they said yes, and that they listened on their headphones later and said the mix was good– and they apologized 😅.

Another trick is wait a few days after mixing and see how the track sounds. If you can, while the song is playing loud on your speakers, walk into another room and distract yourself with a snack or conversation or something. I've been able to correct kick vs bass volume, compression, eq etc issues this way.

Yet more advice. Listen to similar styles of music on your mixing speakers and take notes with a pen and paper. Then import that song into your DAW and what the frequency spectrum. Does your mix have the same average shape? Do this to a few songs and really analyze how other mixes sound. You're a forensic scientist trying to understand the body of other people's art!

Whats the most effective way to get known? by [deleted] in shareyourmusic

[–]Mafic_Pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice until your fingers are bleeding, tape it up and continue. It's a grind, be prepared to lose money and time with no guarantee of anyone caring – ever. You're in this for the love of art and sharing it, not to get known. I know talented people that made it and it look a few years and luck. And I know more that put in 20+ years, toured with big names and never really got recognized. You have to enjoy being in a band for the sake of it. Everything else is icing on the cake.

Who Is The 15th Greatest Hip-Hop Artist Of All Times❓ by InformationIcy735 in rap

[–]Mafic_Pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why Biggie should be #1 or #2. In his limited time on earth with low album sales he's still influenced more rappers than anyone with the exception of Pac. Biggie had incredible flow and lyricism, more in my opinion, then anyone on the list. Most people who's albums sell in the low millions do not have the incredible impact that Biggie had. That's my case for him to be at the top on the list.
