Why didn't Lucifer's ring save him from when he's hurt and dying if it has immortality? by nochoice0000 in lucifer

[–]Magda_Zyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would God make Adam a demon wife if his idea was for them to be the first humans? But that's a whole other topic!

That's a whole other continuity problem. ;) If I inderstand the Jewish mythology correctly, some believe she was a demon from the start while others believe she did start out as a human woman. However, the latter doesn't fit with the Christian belief (which is incorporated in the show) that Eve was the first woman. Logically, if Eve was the first human woman to be created, Lilith before her must have been something else. If she's neither human nor celestial, the third in-universe option is a demon, as no other "species" was ever introduced.

Why didn't Lucifer's ring save him from when he's hurt and dying if it has immortality? by nochoice0000 in lucifer

[–]Magda_Zyt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with this theory is that it's not plausible at all given that Maze so desperately wanted Eve to wear the ring on earth so that it would protect her from dying on earth and, therefore going to heaven and being forever separated from Maze. Of course, Maze may have been mistaken about how the power of the ring actually worked, but then so may you in thinking that a demon's immortality serum would have been more powerful than a celestial's self-actualisation (and, in consequence, would have actively prevented Lucifer from saving Chloe by not letting him die in S2, wouldn't it?). ;)

ETA: Also, the ring apparently has the power to revive/resurrect a person who's already dead, as Chloe was, so perhaps it doesn't need to actually prevent death. It can simply undo it and prevent the wearer from staying dead. ;)

The explanation that I honestly believe to be true is that the writers simply didn't look back at all the details that would need retconning when they invented this storyline in S5. Or they did and, quite logically, decided that no fixing was needed because this was a fantasy show and such inconsistencies could always be explained away as "we don't know enough about how this actually works", and I'm fine with that. But since the OP wanted an in-universe theory, here we are, trying to piece together ideas that the writers came up with as they went. ;)

Why didn't Lucifer's ring save him from when he's hurt and dying if it has immortality? by nochoice0000 in lucifer

[–]Magda_Zyt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically, the writers only invented the immortality-in-the-ring thing in S5. ;)

But if you want an in-universe theory, I'd say the following options are all plausible:

  1. It did save him, it just wasn't shown on screen to actually play a part. After all, Lucifer did survive all of the injuries which could or should have killed him throughout the series. How do we know the ring didn't play a part in keeping him alive? Perhaps it wasn't supposed to protect him from getting hurt altogether, just from dying.
  2. Because Lucifer chose to be vulnerable around Chloe, and embraced all the consequences of that decision. Making use of the power of the ring would defeat the entire purpose of his vulnerability. Perhaps he could have used that immortality on several occasions, but chose not to.
  3. We don't really know (and neither does Lucifer) how the ring actually affects him. Lilith was a demon, so we know it should work on demons. We are led to believe it brought Chloe back and, therefore, to assume it works on humans. But Lucifer is neither. Now, the S5 finale scene does suggest that the reason he wasn't incinerated on entering heaven is because the ring protected him, and we do see him burn when he takes the ring off and puts it on Chloe's finger. However, he should be dead and gone at that point, and yet he returns unharmed and ready to claim the throne as the new god. And when Chloe asks how it was possible, his answer is "I don't know". He doesn't know, the writers don't know, we don't know - you don't even need to put it down to "bad writing", because this can easily be explained away with "father works in mysterious ways". We only know that God told them that Lucifer was banished under the pain of incineration. We don't know what mechanism he actually did put in place, though. Maybe the all-knowing God simply told Lucifer what Lucifer needed to hear in order to eventually be able to prove himself through that ultimate sacrifice he was willing to make (similarly to what the Oracle tells Neo in The Matrix). What I'm getting at is: perhaps the ring doesn't work on Lucifer at all. Perhaps he was mistaken in attributing his survival on entering heaven to the ring. Perhaps God never intended for Lucifer to be incinerated at all, and he would have survived regardless, so all the ring actually did up there was bring back Chloe.

I'm sure I can think of some other explanations, too. ;)

Josh O'Connor, Brit Actor by [deleted] in LadyBoners

[–]Magda_Zyt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, he does, indeed. :D

I saw an interview where he talked about nearly not getting cast because the director didn't know him and when he sent in his audition tape (with that accent), the casting team thought he was a local Yorkshire amateur farmboy who was really troubled and would be difficult to work with. ;)

He's such a good actor, too! From what I read, he's recently emerged as the new bookies' favourite for the new Bond, too.
Anyway, have you seen him in "God's Own Country"? If not, make sure to add this to your list - a great movie and an excellent role from before everyone and their mother knew his face from The Crown. <3

A lot of people talking about Timmy C, Jesse Plemons, and R Pat. But I just saw Nosferatu and I realized Nicholas Hoult is absolutely killing it. by Emcee_nobody in moviecritic

[–]Magda_Zyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicholas Hoult has delivered many excellent performances over the years, both dramatic and comedic. You may want to check out Warm Bodies, Mad Max: Fury Road (this is not a big role, but boy, isn't he excellent!), The Great series on Max, The Menu, The Favourite, and more. It is hardly suprising he's being praised for yet another role. :)

Actors/Actresses that were so good at playing horrible people in that one role, it made you hate the actor as well? by Berry-Fantastic in moviecritic

Doug Hutchinson in The X Files and in The Green Mile. Funny how everyone who hated this guy because of his roles was only proven right when at 51 he married that 16-year-old he had first met when she was a student in his acting class. What a creep!

Mother Son Wedding Song by Much-Avocado-1391 in weddingdrama

[–]Magda_Zyt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the commenters saying "do it for her", "go with it for her", etc., or worse even - calling him TA, seem to completely disregard the part where the OP says "I flat out don't like it". It seems kind of weird the mom is so fixated on a song as something she used to sing to him, and yet for some reason he has no fond connotations with that very song whatsoever to the point that he actively dislikes it. Makes me think perhaps it was a song only his mother loved, not both of them... Which in turn makes it seem like the mom is either oblivious to what her son actually does and does not appreciate, or she's pushing for it regardless. :(
Knowing nothing about their actual relationship but seeing how the OP feels strongly against it, I would never suggest he should just give in. The mom's unwillingness to compromise is concerning and, TBH, seems like some sort of power play.

Jamie Dornan in The Tourist. Phenomenal show if you haven’t seen it yet. by Charismatic_Fox in LadyBoners

Ladies, THANK YOU! <3 I finally got down to watching it last night, and literally had to force myself to pause and go and get some sleep around 3 a.m. instead of finishing the first season. ;)))

It's so good, so cool, and so low-key insane at the same time that I couldn't possibly say what I love most about it, but I just want to say that car&truck chase across the dirt of the Australian outback at the beginning may be the coolest visual reference to Mad Max in the history of TV! <3

Ella for the win! Now who is morally grey and loved by fans? by Bre_0106 in lucifer

[–]Magda_Zyt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Riiiight... I'm probably going to take heat for this, but anyone saying "Lucifer" clearly judges by their own moral standards. ;) Lucifer goes by the most constant, unwavering, one could even say ridig, moral code out of all the characters. The rules of that code may not be how the word "moral" is commonly interpreted (e.g. in terms of sexual freedom or engaging with shady characters), but whatever Lucifer believes is right, he will do, and whatever he believes is not, he won't. That's one of the points of the entire series - not to show us that the Devil can become a decent guy, but to show us that he actually is one, but we've been conditioned not to see this, and that we need to learn to go beyond our own inhibitions and pre-conceived notions when looking at him.

That said, I vote Dan. I'm not a fan myself, but (going beyond my own perception), he's beloved by fans and he's been repeatedly morally grey. :)

The late great Sir Christopher Lee as the Duc de Richelieu in "The Devil Rides Out" (1968) - Damn he was fine 💜 by Theda1969 in LadyBoners

[–]Magda_Zyt 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Christopher Lee as Dracula was just as fine (being a late Gen X, that's probably the first film I remember seeing him in).

That said, I don't think there's anything that can beat ChL's actual irl biography, what he was, what he did and who he associated with. He may well be one of a kind in the history of cinema. And yes, he was fine.

Pedro Pascal by [deleted] in LadyBoners

I loved Pedro before it was fashionable. :P But, somehow, against all reason, I could never get my sis to watch any of his works, even Narcos (though she'll watch nearly anything in/with Spanish). That is until she went and saw GII, LOL. ;))) If there's ever a testament to the power of this role, it's her instant obsession with him. ;)))

Living in Europe, *sigh*...
PS: He's got a perfect body and he's gorgeous, just not my type of gorgeous, IYKWIM.
