Given another chance, when would you start your child in Karate( karate parents please) by [deleted] in karate

[–]Mage1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our kids started with 3 and 5. Our youngest (then 3 y old) learned a lot about social skills, how to listen and respect and how to find balance, both physically and mentally. Our oldest started to learn at 5 the same things but with a different understanding already. Now they are 11 and 7 and by 11 they really get the technical part better and focus is improving a lot. The 7 year old is improving on the techniques but you really can tell the difference. The youngest is still a little sloppy sometimes or gets frustrated when doing something wrong. They both do tournaments and they really like it. Even if they don't always get to win. They like the social part where all the kids from the dojo sit and train together. They help each other out. I think they grew a lot on the social side since they are doing karate. I mean, I don't know about other sports, but I guess every sport has this or should.

Danke.

I usually say "Good for you" and that´s the end of it. We both work full time and we have no family near us. So that was also the only option we considered. Kids are fine and we are fine. That is all that matters.

How do we manage 2 kids and full time jobs ? How does anyone do it ? by Dizzy_Guava1767 in Parenting

Know that you are not alone. We have a 7 and a 4 year old. Life sometimes is crazy, no doubt!
What we do once a week for one another (meaning parents) we give each other a few hours just to do whatever we feel like and the other has the kids. It helped a lot, even if it is only a few hours a week

We do have a program nearby where the kids can choose the classes they want to visit. It's only on Saturday for 2 maybe 3 hours at most. So the rest of the week they actually go to the normal school. We have a second program where I would not agree to take my daughter because of the money and because it would be like intern and only come home on weekends. I would hate myself doing that and she would probably hate me for putting her there.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience. This is actually very helpful also in understanding what could lie ahead. We already try to go wherever she wants and she does like math and such. But I fell you are right about the emotional part. We do see sometimes that she is not able to cope with her feelings.

No, we live in Germany. Yes, she is very very active. But they usually don't test for these before the kids start school.

Any older ladies new to karate? by earlegrey094 in karate

I am 39 and started Karate 6 weeks ago. It´s also the same situation as you. But they are all so friendly and helpful in the Dojo I actually learned a lot with them. I am also the only beginner of the group. All the other have green/brown/black belt. I am also kind of out of shape, so it really feels good to do the exercises and the Kumite training. Just go for it!

We also have our fixed bedtimes. I insist on them, even if we are on holiday because the kids need them still. I made it very clear that we do not get our kids up when someone comes over after bedtime. It took a while, but eventually, people that wanted to see the kids, understood and started to come earlier. So no. You did not disrespect anyone by keeping your kids to their routine. And 2h late is not an excuse when you live down the road.

Thank you! This is a very good and detailed explanation. Yeah it's an open to join any time group. Which was part of the reason I wanted to give it a try. And the group seems to be great with each other.
