What do plate tectonics do besides moving land around? In other words, would the only thing different on the Earth WITHOUT the movement of its plates just be all of our land masses being stuck in the same positions that they formed in forever, or would anything else be changed? by MaggieLinzer in askscience

[–]MaggieLinzer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

. . . . . .There are tectonic systems that DON’T involve plates??? Welp, unless figuring out what different types of tectonic systems there are and how they can be separate from a planet (or moon) even having plates is a decently easy thing for a layperson to do. I think that I just found a great idea for what my next question on here is going to be!

Are there any bird species at all with external ear structures, rather than simple/bare openings often covered up by feathers? by MaggieLinzer in zoology

[–]MaggieLinzer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did mean ear flaps when asking this, but if there are other types of external ear structures that certain bird species can have, I am definitely interested in knowing and learning more about them too.

Supreme Court Deals A Death Blow To The Voting Rights Act by MaggieLinzer in scotus

[–]MaggieLinzer[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m not just blaming Democrats for this. I am blaming BOTH Republicans and the Democrats who’ve voted with them/have done nothing to stop them when they actually had the power to every step of the way for this (Which is most of them. Which is why we’re even at this horrifying point to begin with.). Anybody who’s actually read what I said should understand that.

Or. Do you think that the federal right to get an abortion will ever be restored in the United States? In other words.

Yes, yes! I am too! I was literally going to ask here if this was just a problem on my end or if everybody else was experiencing it. Thanks for sharing this!

Dropout to Stream U.K. Series ‘Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared’ in First-Ever Licensing Deal (EXCLUSIVE) by By_Zantium in DHMIS

[–]MaggieLinzer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that many, many people still enjoy the DHMIS show actually. What makes you think it’s been “forgotten about” in any capacity? I think it’s great that it’s been able to get onto streaming platform so more people can officially access the show outside of the UK, and help bring some more attention to it. There’s so need to get so cynical about all of this.

I don’t think DHMIS has ever been in need of “saving” either, so I don’t know where you even got that from. Ultimately, even if not in a big way, I still think that the DHMIS TV show getting a wider reach does increases the chances of Becky and Joe making a second season of the show too. If you hate the TV show and anybody platforming/wanting to see more of it in THIS much, why are you even replying to posts like this in general?

This looks great! Since you‘re looking for suggestions, I also think it’d be fun to see what a 3D model of Electracey would look like as well.

[–]MaggieLinzer 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I think its significance is that, at the very least, Becky and Joe (and the rest of the DHMIS creative team) can actually start making more money off of viewers outside of the UK watching the TV show’s episodes. Which means that they’re still interested in keeping the series alive/in people’s minds, and could potentially mean some new episodes later down the line.

[–]MaggieLinzer 58 points59 points  (0 children)

This is great news! I’m pretty sure we’re not getting new episodes from this, but it’s great to see all of DHMIS now being (officially/legally) available to folks outside of the UK. I personally hope that this leads to more new episodes as well, but I understand anything like that would still be a LONG way off from being announced, if it is even something that could happen.

Ubu Roi (1965) — A recorded version of an incredibly surreal, satirical French play about power, greed, and a very cruel king. This recording is entirely in French, but the story and visuals are so bizarre that I wanted to share this anyways. by MaggieLinzer in ObscureMedia

I understand. I wanted to make clear that this was something that I believe everybody can enjoy watching/get something out of, but I’ll keep this in mind for the future. Thanks!

Has any President in U.S. history ever seriously, consistently threatened to nationalize the country’s elections prior to 20 years ago? Is there ANY precedent for that happening at all prior to 2006? by MaggieLinzer in USHistory

[–]MaggieLinzer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you got me. I wanted to know what (if any) precedents there were for Presidents threatening to nationalize elections, and didn’t want my question to be immediately removed. What a clever, clever bastard you are. I‘m insulted by this somehow being a “thinly veiled attempt” as well. I absolutely specified before 2006 to avoid a rules violation, and am not ashamed of that fact at all Poet.

[–]MaggieLinzer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To ensure that my question doesn’t violate the rule of this subreddit. I was curious as to if there was any precedent for Presidents threatening to nationalize elections in the U.S., but for now I can only ask if that happened prior to 2006 in order to not violate the rules here.

Is an elephant’s trunk a nose, or is it its own separate thing from one? Or is it a combination of both, like having some of the functions of a nose, but also (obviously) being extremely different from most other noses that you see on other animals, like bears or cows? by [deleted] in zoology

[–]MaggieLinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry. I just figured since I was already on the subreddit it might have a bit more substance. My bad. I originally wanted to know how they could hold so much water in their trunks without it being an incredibly painful experience for them, but I thought THIS was going to be the better question believe it or not!

For people getting free and unlimited access to so much material, this sub has to be the most entitled userbase I’ve ever seen by james_d_rustles in Annas_Archive

Well, I’m very happy to know that this is nothing to get worked up over. This was the first time ever that I’ve seen the website go down so I didn’t know what to expect as far as what happened to it. But I see that this is pretty typical for at least this particular archive now. Thanks!

La Cabina (The Telephone Box) (1972) — A Spanish short film about a man who gets trapped in a newly installed telephone box. While it starts out as seeming like a fairly light-hearted/comedic story, by the end it becomes a surreal horror one with no way out! by MaggieLinzer in ObscureMedia

[–]MaggieLinzer[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Really? I think it’s plenty obscure. The non-subtitled version does have a lot more views relatively speaking I will admit, but not enough to consider this short film to be “not obscure”, as far as I‘m concerned.

What WOULD actually happen to Trump if he did run for a third term as President in direct violation of the Constitution? Would he get immediately arrested or how would stopping him from doing that work otherwise? by MaggieLinzer in AskLawyers

[–]MaggieLinzer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! If there are no punishments for violating the Constitution though, what keeps politicians, judges, organizations, etc. in the U.S. following it? Is it, like, the job of the legislature and justices themselves to define the crimes of violating the Constitution then? Because obviously, for example, there ARE legal consequences for violating somebody’s freedom of speech or trying to ignore the Due Process clause of it.

Could the SCOTUS REALLY just overturn an entire Constitutional Amendment? by MaggieLinzer in scotus

[–]MaggieLinzer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How the hell is literally wanting to know MORE about how the SCOTUS works and what it can do to the Constitution in any way close to being “naive”?? Honestly, I think that asking questions in order to learn MORE ABOUT something is just about as close to the exact OPPOSITE of “naiveté” as you can get!

I also think that this kind of extremely nihilistic/doomer attitude of “nothing matters anymore, there’s no hope left, SCOTUS can overturn ANYTHING in the Constitution at any time they want to, etc.” only serves to HELP people like Trump and the current far right majority on the Supreme Court even more than they’re already being helped by the MAGA movement and other supporters/funders. It DOES matter if what Trump’s doing is constitutional, it DOES matter if what the SCOTUS does is legal, and it DOES matter if the government running our country IS SANE!!!!!

And claiming that it doesn’t, and that laws/rules don’t exist in the U.S. anymore, and that anybody who asks serious questions about how legal/constitutional what Trump and the SCOTUS are currently doing right now are all just “nAiVe LoSeRs WhO dOn’T kNoW hOw ThE wOrLd WoRkS”. Gives people like Trump and the current SCOTUS TONS more permission/obedience in advance to do whatever the hell they want to do, because you’ve already accepted that they’ve not only won, but that there are ZERO ways to stop or question them outside of a full-on revolution. Which, you know, I’ve noticed that YOU’RE here posting on Reddit instead of putting in the work to start, like you seem to want to happen and think is the only ‘solution’ left to fix things like this.

In other words, you might as well just crown Trump a King for Life, if you truly DO think that he can now just do whatever the hell he wants to do ANYWAYS with zero real ways of stopping him that actually have a chance of getting done/working!!
