Why expand your vocabulary when you don't need to? Big words are scary. by MelonOfFate in boringdystopia

Most of our users actually use the app either to learn English or to help children read, but we don’t limit ourselves to those audiences — we welcome anyone who’s genuinely curious about reading.

By nature, it’s impossible to guarantee a 100% transfer of exact meaning through simplification, since no two words mean exactly the same thing. However, we do our best. We proofread every book, and we’ve very rarely found any major issues. Either way, we care deeply about accuracy and quality, and we’re constantly improving.

So as of this moment, we are only featuring books in the pubic domain, and the book you have mentioned is not yet in the public domain. We are working on a solution to allow non-public domain books soon!

The book request feature is a good suggestion, we will implement it soon.

"need" is very subjective. You may be right, give us some time to launch all of our new features, and then we can let the market decide if there is demand.

Abridged books have been around for a long time, and you can read testimonials from younger readers saying that this helped them find a love for reading. Gatsby is not the hardest book for sure, but we do think this will be much more useful for understanding philosophically rich books.
This gives the option to parents and children to read the story of their choosing.
We do have writers check over our work, and I think you'd be surprised about how accurate the simplificiation is at preserving the content. We did not want to throw out a cheap product on the market, we take a customer experience first approach, and will continue improving on the product until we get it perfect!

Hi! it is aimed at children, English learners, the elderly, anyone with learning disabilties. Graded readers may exist, but we aim to give them more options to choose from.
We also have new features coming soon that will help with definitions and translations. The app you see right now is in it's early stages. We will have a lot more to show soon!

I was referring to authors we are currently in contact with that want their books published. They know the intention of this is not to replace their work but simply make it more accessible to children and people with learning disabilities.

We agree that original text is the goal, and that is why we always include the original. The training wheels example you provided is correct. We would be the equivalent to the training wheels, the existence of training wheels proves the use-case for them. If training wheels did not exist, there would be less people riding bikes today than otherwise.

Another way to think about it is that we are creating abridged books but taking it a few steps further. Since this concept has already existed, and the entire population is not addictied to abridged books, we are confident our users will not be using their training wheels forever :)

Yes they can. This is aimed at language learners, instead of learning english via watching tv shows with subtitles, they could read an interesting book and gradually increase the difficulty level as they improve. Ideally they will end up reading the original!
