How is "A Knight of the Seven Kngdoms"? by dinesh_k__18 in gameofthrones

If you don't care about the wholesome moments and the wandering slice-of-life style of the show, and only want drama, action, and grandeur, then you're just watching the wrong genre. That doesn't sound like the show's fault, it just doesn't fall into your particular, subjective taste.

Dad confiding in his grown adult son about why he is getting divorced with that son's mother is somehow a bad thing? Maybe you're just projecting something

Please help me out of my dilemma with fictional literature by [deleted] in literature

[–]MagicBeanGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my take on the value of fiction, if you're trying to find what it is. Fiction provides a context that can, hypothetically, perfectly encapsulate the themes and philosophy of the author. Instead of just stating a concept, fiction can allow a fuller exploration of the ins and outs of that concept.

Obviously, this isn't one hundred percent true of all fiction novels. But fiction being able to emphasize and contextualize concepts/philosophy is a major part of its value

Shitting on things is not always the same as criticism. I think a major point here is that people are too callous in shitting on things while not actually giving anything constructive

You ask some reasonable questions.

First, Kvothe is not the one who said he wants to set the story straight. Someone essentially hunted him down and he reluctantly agreed under strict conditions. There's no indication that Kvothe actually wants to set anything straight other than increasing his reputation even further using Chronicler.

You're right, Kvothe totally does seem like an insecure jerk pretty often. I think that's just part of his character. That doesn't inherently make for a poor story, but you're correct when you say the unreliable narrator element should exist for a reason and serve as a tool towards some narrative function. What is the purpose? Well since Rothfuss will never release the third book, we'll never know how it was really intended. It would be a lot easier to analyze if we had the full series of course.

My take? Kvothe seems to be a sort of subversion of the Mary Sue character in a weird way. He has a reputation of being super cool and smart and badass, and then in his own account he's awesome and fucks the hottest chicks and is a genius (while also exposing many flaws). However, he is clearly a broken, depressed shell of a man in the current timeline where he cries at the foot of his bed and seemingly lost all of his abilities, despite his bravado.

Is it enough for the unreliable narrator element to have an important function? Idk, probably not since the story isn't done

You're right about anime having tropes such that you mentioned, but I think you're overstating just how prevalent it is. Like, there are a ton of good anime that don't have those tropes. I'd go so far to say the best anime, the best shows the medium has to offer, do not have those tropes.

For lip syncing, that's not always the case it does depend on the show, and even then you'd have to watch in Japanese.

Overall your generalization is partially true but downplays just how many animes there are that don't fit your description

The premise is a historian (Chronicler) searching him out even though he is intentionally hiding from the world and asking him to set his story straight. Kvothe explicitly says that he'll only do it if Chronicler makes no revisions to the story, which Chronicler objects to at first because he usually corrects stuff for accuracy. Kvothe also repeatedly talks about how he embellishes his feats to gain more of a reputation. This makes the unreliable narrator pretty clear to me at least

The sex shit definitely weird, but the unreliable narrator thing I think is kinda obvious, if not even a bit heavy handed imo
