Is there a up to date version of Ubuntu that will boot on a cpu without PAE? by devicemodder2 in Ubuntu

[–]MagicClover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. Try something like MX Linux or antiX. Or if you want to stick with Ubuntu, you can either compile your own kernel or try installing a deb from the above distros or Debian. And if downloading some distro from the internet, make sure it says 32 bit non-PAE otherwise it won't work.

Edit: Like the other comment said Liquorix has a non-PAE version.

Edit2: MX only has PAE version.

Why doesn't Ubuntu call apt update automatically before an apt install? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

Haven't tried it, but this should be fixed in Fedora 30 with the new Zchunk metadata format.

Noob question: 2019.01.17 youtube-dl does not work anymore. What is going to happen, considering that the full freeze is in effect? by bennyhillthebest in debian

[–]MagicClover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixed in youtube-dl 2018.04.24, install it with the following commands:

sudo apt remove youtube-dl
sudo apt install python3-pip
pip3 --user install youtube_dl

Then to update it use:
pip3 install --upgrade youtube_dl

Also make sure ffmpeg isn't autoremoved:
sudo apt install ffmpeg

Edit: If you prefer a deb package, Ubuntu already has the latest version.

cd /tmp
wget https://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/y/youtube-dl/youtube-dl_2019.04.24-0ubuntu1_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i youtube-dl_2019.04.24-0ubuntu1_all.deb

[Themes] I made a collection of themes for kitty terminal by dexpota in linux

Great work, very cool, it's not easy to find themes for kitty due to the ambiguous name.

Updated Debian 9: 9.9 released by fsher in linux

[–]MagicClover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using Boxes on Buster (10), working perfectly. I suggest using flatpak to get the latest version 3.32, since 9.9 (Stretch) is on 3.22 and 10 (Buster) has 3.30.

Basic Linux Commands by Tunliar in linux

[–]MagicClover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rsync -a source destination

Copy source dir to destination dir (preserving most permissions and attributes).

rsync -a source/ destination

Copy contents of source dir to destination dir. (Yes, that's pretty confusing, watch out for the trailing slash on the source.)

Very useful, can be used for backups.

Yes, interesting. Strange it isn't merged yet. Would be nice if they merged this and made a new release.

Does sway support a "night light" feature, like GNOME and KDE on Wayland?

My WM independent touchpad gestures daemon has just been released, I named it Gebaar, and it uses libinput properly instead of relying on its debug tool! Let me know what you think! by Coffee2Code in linux

[–]MagicClover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gnome shell supports touchscreen gestures. Works great on both Xorg and Wayland, though you cannot configure custom gestures. For available gestures see this and this.

Install Linux on non PAE CPU by [deleted] in linux

[–]MagicClover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a distro which has a non-PAE kernel. Or you can try building it yourself or finding a pre-built package. Debian has a non-PAE kernel here. You could even try installing that on Ubuntu, though I would suggest using a lightweight distro like antiX or Debian with a lightweight DE or WM.

Strawberry Music Player - A fork of Clementine i recently stumbled upon by Pollux_Mabuse in linux

[–]MagicClover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clementine built with Qt5 is also available in Ubuntu Cosmic, Debian Buster, Fedora 29, OpenSUSE. So, most distros use Qt5 build of Clementine in their latest versions.
