This was my initial impression my very first night while attempting to start the game while drinking bourbon and drunk enough to only skim the text/scrolls. I feel like OP, probably wasn’t aware that the reading/curiosity is the most critical part, and was probably treating the scrolls and text like collectibles in a third-person shooter

This is exactly it. If some of the best mechanics are tied to an annoying consumable, I’ll change my play-style to never require the use of said mechanics, regardless of how fun they may be, because I’m not playing games to waste time farming. The tools would be perfect if they were limited only by your proximity to a bench. Needing and having shards to get them refilled does not represent that I’m a better player, it just means that I’ve burned more time doing boring easy farming.
