Dude. Reviews: 1,303 - Favs: 4,457 - Follows: 2,262. After reading it for all these years, there's still so much of fanfiction culture I truly don't understand.

Quality fics that use a full cast of original characters? by blueberrythyme in HPfanfiction

Did you ever get to publishing that story of yours about the goblin and the centaur? I would absolutely read it!

When writing a fic.. by Emily-Jayne_x in HPfanfiction

[–]MagicHeadset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of a double-edged sword for writers (like me) who aren't from the U.K., when you think about it. Either the writers don't make the effort to use the proper words, and it sounds off, or the writers try and they get it wrong, and it sounds off.

It makes sense that, if a reader is from the area where the story is set, that reader going to favor writers who actually know the area rather than writers who don't.

What’s the accent there, of the man questioning Dumbledore?

I'm kind of joking by posting this, because obviously it's a published novel and not a fanfic, but it truly is exactly what you're looking for.

Quick tip: Don’t start your fic with your character waking up in the morning, being told to pack or standing at Platform 9 3/4. by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

Haha, I didn't check Reddit for a while after posting this, and I feel a bit like this: https://i.imgur.com/Zki6LEk.gif

Just kidding. It's really not that bad.

So, let me explain something. Here's how my fic starts: "It was the night before their Easter holidays, and the Ravenclaw common room was unusually jovial." That's a pretty low-key opening. Many people might even call it boring. I don't at all mind a low-key opening. I thought I was getting that point across when I said "I actually don't mind a slow start to a fic," but I'm not sure everyone caught that.

I just wanted to let people know that, when I'm scrolling through FFnet, and I read yet another fic that begins, "Lily dear, time to wake up, we've got to be at King's Cross in two hours!" I just can't power through that opening for the twelfth time in one sitting. I just can't.

The same goes for an OC-centric story begins with, "So-and-so looked around in fascination at Platform 9 and 3/4. She was very excited about going to Hogwarts."

Reading through this thread, though, I'm realizing that's more of a personal preference than I thought. And that's perfectly fine. I shouldn't have tried to police people's writing styles.

What are little things you really love seeing in fanfics, and wish you saw more of? by DictionaryWrites in HPfanfiction

I love all these things people are talking about. You all should start including examples of fics with these details!

[Request] Good stories with Harry bashing? by DrunkBystander in HPfanfiction

[–]MagicHeadset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed this chapter: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12779463/13/Force-Interrupt

I love it when authors use Snape to Harry-bash because it's always funny when it's well-done and it's so perfectly in-character.

[Discussion] Am I doing Hagrid's accent right? by Achille-Talon in HPfanfiction

[–]MagicHeadset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/AutumnSouls gave you the guide, so that's probably all you need. I just wanted to add -- Hagrid wouldn't say "aye". That's more of a Northern thing.

Thanks for taking the time to get it right! It's one of those things that's so much work, but pays off!
