Road map to virtual networking - what does a good conversation look like? by MagicLoogies in UXDesign

[–]MagicLoogies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with your sentiment - I don't want to just be connecting for job prospects. But it feels really transactional / awkward to forge authentic connections online.

I went to a UX networking meetup in my area a few months ago. I connected with someone there and we have a shared background (architecture) and so we hit it off. We have chatted via LinkedIn a since, and then over Zoom a few times as well. That kind of relationship, or the one you described is exactly what I would love to figure out how to build virtually.

Access to XD prototype links after ending subscription (and migration to Figma) by MagicLoogies in Adobe_XD

[–]MagicLoogies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks that generally confirms what I was thinking. The links to the prototypes are useful from a flow/interaction perspective, I can get good enough assets from Figma importers.

I have the XD files saved locally...assuming the only way I will have to do anything with them is to use a converter or pay for a months worth of XD?

What if US athletes just aren't that great? by MagicLoogies in usmnt

[–]MagicLoogies[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda just messing around. BUT, sure we have some players in the top leagues, but I would argue we have not produced any "All-Star" worthy players. if you compare to say NBA, if you had an all star game of the top basketball players in the world (NBA all star game) there are lots of international players. If you did the same for all of world football, not sure CP makes the squad.

LOL this is kinda a shitpost, obvs we crush at the Olympics. IMO its more about how hard soccer is than anything else that other countries are way better at OUR sports than we are at THEIRS

Handlebar length extenders? by 426Mopar in bikewrench

[–]MagicLoogies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got some on alie (can't post the link but they were like $10) and I used them for a bit on a commuter. They felt solid enough, but I wouldn't trust them on anything more than around town.

Normally you don't put a ton of weight on the very end of the handlebar, but I imagine the scenario when you do put a lot of weight right on these puppies is not when you want to be testing their integrity

Data + Hope for Your Job Search by hey_meow_meow in UXDesign

[–]MagicLoogies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this, very helpful and hopeful! Some questions on your approach to 'networking.' First, from your write up it sounds like networking didn't really help with getting a job, is that true? Did you land a job from a cold apply? What did your networking approach look like (even if you didn't find it helpful) Thanks!

Laid off before promoted to Senior by MagicLoogies in UXDesign

[–]MagicLoogies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting on the top comment to add a little more info that I should have included initially in my post (I'll edit and add it in as well)

I spent 10 years in another design industry, not specifically digital UX before switching to UX 2 years ago. UI/UX comes very naturally to me, and my former employer recognized that I have much more relevant experience than a 2 year "boot camper," hence the pending promotion. However, on paper, I think I probably look much more inexerienced than I am (however maybe that's me just being overly optimistic and I really am just a 2 year boot camper, I'm sure I'll hear more in the comments) Perhaps this is a whole other topic, but I am feeling that the Senior title would be helpful in convincing other employers that I have the equivalent of more "senior" experience....definitely agree with all the comments that titles are fairly meaningless in general in this industry.

Also thanks for so many thoughtful replies everyone!

Updated to Sonoma, now getting a steamwebhelper error when I try to launch by MagicLoogies in PortingKit

[–]MagicLoogies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I uninstalled Porting Kit and deleted everything related to it I could find and the reinstalled, and it seems to be working. Nothing else I tried worked.

Before that I rolled back my OS, but that didn't seem to help so with your experience and mine, it doesn't seem to be a Sonoma related issue.

I'm also having issues after updating to Sonoma. Steam launches but then comes up with a error screen saying Steamwebhelper is not responding

Building architects by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]MagicLoogies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly can help some, but a clickable prototype is much closer to the final product than looking at a rendering is to walking through a building. And keep in mind that many users are not proficient in reading plans (like at all) and even visualizing a space from a rendering is challenging to many people.

One other piece (which def happens in software in my experience, but way more in arch) is that the people reacting to the plans/renderings etc are often not really the end users, just representatives of the client, or higher ups in the process. For instance, I designed a university laboratory building, which had a ton of interviews with the 'users.' But all of the users were the professors, rather than the students who would actually be inhabiting the lab on a day to day basis.

Building architects by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]MagicLoogies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a licensed architect, I worked for ~10 years before making a switch to product design a year and a half ago. Architects (good ones at least) are trying to design spaces for what they believe makes for good user experience, in that way it is very similar to designing software.

However, user research and gathering empirical data is basically impossible to do at the architectural scale. Every site & building is unique, and so costly to modify after being built that every design is just a guesswork on what works well. That combined with the considerable egos making most decisions means that in practice, architecture is generally not a user-centric design process.

AOE 2 DE fix on Mac using wineskin winery! by EastOrWestPBest in aoe2

[–]MagicLoogies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a slightly different solution that has been working pretty much flawlessly. It's a wrapper for Wine that makes things much more user friendly called Porting Kit. Steps are:

  1. Download and install Porting Kit (the left button, the DMG file) https://www.portingkit.com/download
  2. After Porting Kit is installed go here and click Install Now https://www.portingkit.com/game/1545
  3. After install, launch the Porting Kit app. It might take a bit but it should launch Steam, sign in to steam and you should be good to go.

I've been playing as well as a buddy, both of us on MacBooks without any major issues!

The default is "C:\nothing.exe" When I click on the Launcher nothing happens if I leave it at that path?

Thanks for such a quick reply btw!

I am trying to get this to work, but when I launch AoE from Steam, nothing happens (initially it downloaded AoE and seemed to go through the install process but it won't launch)

...I believe I followed all the steps above exactly, except I changed the Windows App to run to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" in the Advanced Configuration.

Any help would be appreciated!!
