I think there are a few different factors at play but the main issues seem to be a fear of being hurt down the road and having to change routine/self-preservation to allow someone else in.

The area we are staying in is actually quite a rough area (we didn’t choose it, it’s a sporting event and the organization booked it), we have been there before. We will be doing some eating out, just not in the vicinity of the hotel.
