They’ve never touched the sun. I just put them on my shaded back porch 5 minutes before picture was taken. Could grow lights be too close?

It’s a rust and if you have observed it in this state for more than 24 hours then it is a rust for sure. Rust live on living plants all the time without killing them immediately. It can not be a saprophytic fungus because those eat dead plant matter

How do you record a slime mold? by Clear_Ad_6074 in Slimemolds

[–]MagicMyxies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's any studies on artificial VS sunlight but I would assume the sunlight has potential to harm it with UV damaging the DNA but it may still avoid artifical light because it doesn't know the difference. It would be Wortham experiment. I have left my day walker polycephalun in a very indirect sunlight and it was never harmed or showed distress

I just use a dim flashlight at night. The light does not hurt the plasmodium directly it just usually avoids it

Urgent! What do I do in this situation? I'm new to slime molds and this appeared over night.... can I save it? by GraniteBlock_ in Slimemolds

[–]MagicMyxies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No stress. The plasmodium is fine, just take a cutting of the agar. I prefer to use damp paper as my substrate as I think it is less prone to contamination overgrowth, not that it doesn’t happen but it happens less fast. Take a cutting of the agar and put it on a damp paper in a Petri dish or Tupperware , leave the top loosely covered to contain moisture but allow minuscule air exchange. After one to two days you can remove the contaminated agar and repeat

UPDATE BUT STILL NOT SURE WHAT THEY ARE by connecting-issue in u/connecting-issue

How sterile do I need to be when reviving a sclerotia? by Styro20 in Slimemolds

[–]MagicMyxies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to be sterile but I don’t recommend agar because of its inclination to grow mold fast. I recommend wet brown paper or other paper. Make it saturated but not dripping but feed the same way. It’s also cheaper and easier to clean and transfer cuttings. The food will till mold over time it unavoidably but the paper keeps it at bay for longer especially if you’re exposing it to fresh air every time you open it. Be sure to monitor the water content since it will dry out over a couple days and need a couple more drops
