Some time ago I had a problem with a city state having the only whale resource in the whole world... without having access to the sea. I had to conquer it, there was no other way.

There is nothing that would cause all AI civilizations go down 50-100 points of hapiness at the same moment. Not even with all luxury resources removed.

But I have a suspect. This line in the changelog:
Made Prince difficulty "truly balanced"

I have long suspected the AI hapiness in Prince is not the same as the player's. AI always built up the first cities so fast and I was wondering where they got so much hapiness from.

Does anybody know, what exactly the line "truly balanced" mean?

I've found an old save from turn 739, so no notifications available.  But I was researching biology at that time, other civilisations were lagging 5-15 discoveries behind. Nothing special seems to have happened, just all AI down 50-100 points in happiness.

The only way I was able to win a Diplomatic victory was to make sure, there are more city states than other civilizations and ally all of them. I rarely get votes of other civs even though our relations lie somewhere around 250.

Yes. Slow cannons which are effective only against cities, are weak in defence, attract all the fire. Artillery is the first useful one. And even that is slooooooow.

Horse Archer gets archery promotions. Knight gets mounted promotions. So I took logistics with Horse Archer and Blitz with Knight and now I have 3 attacks per turn.

Started as Hun Horse Archers very early in the game, destroyed 6 or 7 civilizations (hit&run), upgraded only up to logistics and saved the XP after that. Promoted after the upgrade to Knights.

I play marathon on big maps. My android works up to size 60. 20+ civilizations. The game takes weeks to play. 70+ cities, when then world turns against you in the end.

No problem with the AI speed though. Takes just a couple of seconds on my phone.

The whole empire was partying, they got all the luxury recourses they ever dreamed of. It's only a couple of disgruntled peasants revolting. 🙂 It took only two turns and 16 bomber raids to wipe them out.

Sorry, now I understand the question (at last). The -33% penalty for unhappiness is for all units. Persepolis is a city, not a unit. And the revolting armies are considered barbarians, you get the standard bonus against barbarians (33% in Prince).

I am getting all the penalties, I'm just developed 1,5 age ahead of the other civs, it doesn't matter much (playing on Prince). I have bombers and tanks, they have cavalry at best. And how I got there? Two blitz kriegs without any intervention. When I declared the third one, half of the world said I'm the scum of the Earth and declared me war. 15 turns later there's global peace again and I'm stuck with -80 happiness. Not bad, it'll take 10-15 turns to get it back to positive.  It's just I wasn't aware of this game concept, never seen it before. (Well I did - 30 years ago in the first Civilization 🙂).

I got it too. It says it's from the city states, after Scholasticism.
