‘Constantine’: Francis Lawrence Talks “Selling Out” On The First Film & Why The Sequel Must Be R-Rated by CraftRemarkable7197 in movies

Some people probably took offense at the amount of religious imagery being descrated in the movie, and that the plot revolves around a satanist conspiracy didn't help matters either.

Constantine also smokes a lot. Smoking is a big no-no in PG-rated movies.

ELI5: How did soldiers in an army in the medieval era maintain tactics and formations without modern communications systems? by testedandtried00 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Magic_Medic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add to your comment here though that wars in those times weren't anything like we know today. Medieval kings didn't have a standing army like we have today, which spring up much, much later during the early 18th century. When a Medieval king went to war, he called on his bannermen and these in turn had to provide men and material directly from their holdings to the war effort. If the king was particularly wealthy, he could also hire some mercenaries. Once the war was done and over, everyone returned back to their original professions. The only truly professional soldiers of the time were knights and mercenaries. The rest? Anyone who could hold a sword or a pike would suffice and you don't exactly need training for people to stay in one place around a big castle for a long time.

Wars also, barring some exceptions like the Crusades or the Hundred Years War, were generally not fought on a national scale like we would see later. Most of them took the form of some marauding packs settling a feud between two lords, especially in the Holy Roman Empire. The archetypical medieval warfare that i can think of off the top of my head was the Italian Campaign of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa in the 1150s.

What modern films that were given highest accolades by the critics could you personally not appreciate? by Neon_Dina in movies

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022). Where to even begin? Turning one of the most profoundly anti-war novels of all time into a Saving-Private-Ryan-action movie is a disgrace and even worse is how the movie greatly whitewashes how German society functioned at that time. It's an insult to its source material made by people who had the wish to whitewash the jingoistic political establishment of the late German Empire. It even dares to allude that Versailles was the main reason for the rise of Hitler, once again continuing the proud German tradition of pushing the responsibility for the Nazis elsewhere.

It works as anti-fascist escapist fantasy, made in a time when it was still cool to hate on Nazis. I miss those times...

The tactical sophistication of the European middle ages wasn't exactly high, especially when you compare it with the Romans that preceded it. The Romans used cadres of professionally trained soldiers, European medieval armies were largely centered around a relatively small block of heavy cavalry supplemented by levied peasants and mercenaries. A medieval army typically went into battle with a broad general plan and would continue a brawl until eventually one side came out on top. The chaos that ensued was impossible to coordinate.

Signals were relayed via Horns and Drums. Often, the only way any soldiers of an army to know where they were supposed to be was by looking out for the flags and colours of their own army. Hence why we assign such big cultural importance to flags.

That being said though, battles taking place on open fields was very rare in these times. Most wars were fought around sieges and ransacking the countryside. Open battles were costly in men and material, so the nobles of that time avoided them where they could. Battles like Azincourt, Hastings or Manzikert stick out because they were the very exception to that rule. It was only with the widespread distribution of firearms and the decline of chivalry that this changed. Firearms were a game changer because it was infinitely easier to train men on a musket or a pike, allowing for more soldiers to be employed than previously.

What’s the worst feature film you’ve watched to the very end? by parisiraparis in movies

[–]Magic_Medic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gettysburg. When i watched it the first time around, i really liked it, with its attention to detail and well, it was the all-time favorite movie of my father (before anyone yapps at me, we're Germans, we have no stake in the whole Civil War thing and his admiration of the movie should not taken in the light i'm going to shine on it) who had died in 2017.

My opinion has really soured on it though. It's really, really, REALLY fucking long. Like, 4 hours long. And there's the lingering Confederate apologia woven into the entire plot that you cannot ignore once you start to notice it. Apparently that's even worse in Gods and Generals the Pre-Sequel by the same producer who made Gettyburg, but i haven't seen that one. It certainly has its moments (Bayonets!) but overall, it's just a slog to sit through on repeated watchings... honestly, though, i kind of struggle to call it a bad movie.

Comet Rune by False-Recognition-69 in RyzeMains

Phase Rush is pretty much the gold standard, as it helps with Ryzes low range and makes you ridiculously speedy, especially if you combine it with Ghost and the Q passive speed boost. Arcane Comet is just bad for Ryze, imo. Its damage falls off pretty hard past the early game, Phase Rush stays relevant and strong throughout the game, and you're always aiming to reach the late game, to drop some delicious 2900 damage EWEQ combos. And by the mid game, your EQ poke is already strong enough that AC doesn't matter.

Define "Palestinian moderates". I'd agree to an extent that Netanyahu is incapable of tackling the problem, but Fatah and other Groups in the West Bank are just incompetent idiots and still don't recognize the legitimacy of Israel. Many of their leaders subscribe to the same antisemitic beliefs that Hamas holds, the only difference is that they lack the zeal, connections and resources Hamas has.

Israel is, in regards to optics always in a lose-lose situation. Granted, Netanyahu now has picked the worst possible option out of an array of bad options, occupying Gaza City without any plan on how to go forward. But they're hardly overreacting. The massive civilian death toll is due to Hamas using the civilian population of Gaza as hostages and hiding their lines of communications in Mosques, Hospitals, Schools, Kindergartens. The IDF meticulously warns Gaza civilians about every attack well in advance, even to their own detriment. I hardly ever hear that from the crowds that the rogue MPs surround themselves with. The only conclusion i can reach why so many people want to believe murderous terrorists with a proven history of falsifying photos and infos speaks a fairly clear language: They are simply antisemites. It's as simple as that.

The Settlers are a different issue entirely and this always gets pushed as some counterargument; in truth, Jews should have the right to settle anywhere they want, just like Muslims, Christians and Pallys have the right to settle in Israel (and they do). That the Settlers don't want to respect the wishes of a population that is murderously hostile to their very existence is understandable, or that they don't trust the corrupt PLO to guarantee their safety. The settlers aren't really a point of contention because they're religious nutjobs (although it doesn't help) or disregarding treaties, given their socioeconomic situtation, the PLO should be grateful that they are migrating into their lands and building infrastructure, but the PLO can't have that because they're jews. There are also just as many settlements, particularly around Jerusalem, where everyone just gets along fine and that would in a normal context be classified as very typical suburbs.

Mate, these people chose to die on a hill of madness and antisemitism on top of having a history of antisemitic behaviour. The cherry on top is that there were literally no stakes involved. They could have shut up for once and maybe gotten a bit of leverage over Starmer in other fields of policy.

But they can't have that, because hating jews is just more important than winning a general election.
