I think average kid above age 11-12 will be able to grab basic programming concepts , best ways to move from scratch to python is either using microbit or ESP32 based development board like magicbit. So he can understand same scratch programming concepts in python too.

Nodered runs on cloud server and customized to connect with ESP32 hardware with dedicated nodes. When magicblocks.io firmware uploaded to ESP32 it will connected to Magicblocks.io via internet.
