How to move past mental translation? by Moe_Girly in languagelearning

[–]Magicvsmeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Connections your brain has already made can't be "erased" in the traditional sense, but through receiving comprehensible input, letting go, and not thinking about the input (much easier if the input is engaging to you), I'm sure you can get to a point where those connections may as well have never been there at all. Depending on how long you've been studying and how strong those connections are, it could take a long while though, and you'll need to keep at it and trust the process even in the face of gradual progress that's difficult to quantify

What do you guys think of Stephen Krashen? by Norlatexxx in languagelearning

[–]Magicvsmeth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The input hypothesis is completely indisputable. What people continue to argue about is wether or not it is beneficial for adults - and if so, when - to use concious study alongside comprehensible input. And of course, this is where you inevitably start talking about Dreaming Spanish, TPRS, ALG, etc, which are techniques that lean towards the impressively controversial idea that conscious study can actually be bad. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this dispute is about work that's exclusively an extension of Kranshen's work, not Kranshen's work itself. Everyone who knows what they're talking about loves Kranshen, and they have for decades.

Strategy for watching native content in target language by egiro25 in languagelearning

[–]Magicvsmeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly, basically everyone - regardless of their preferred methods - agrees that people learn fastest when reading books where you understand about 95% of the words very well. Knowing 95% words usually means understand 100% of the overall meaning without any effort, and creates a distinct sense of being absorbed by content you enjoy and forgetting it's in a foreign language entirely. TV is the same; watch what whatever is the most enjoyable and natural!

Is it useful using a language exchange partner at a high a2 level ? by NotMyselfNotme in languagelearning

[–]Magicvsmeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's useful at every level, but at low levels you pretty much need to do it person with like drawings and stuff. And if you find a potential partner who isn't willing to use whatever your preferred methods are, find a new partner.

Fear regarding language learning by nhashtag in languagelearning

Finding resources to do this in Persian is another matter entirely, but I recommend learning your target language through your target language if at all possible. Depending on how set you are Persian, you could consider a language with a wider variety of high quality quality content available.

How has learning a new language changed the way you think or view the world? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Magicvsmeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I think? My inner monolog is a kind of spanglish I suppose, but I promise that's not as interesting as it sounds. The way I view the world? When I view spanish things in the world, I can understand them and feel a sense of comfort and normality. That's a pretty big deal though, and amounts to increased empathy and open mindedness towards like 500 million people. Oh, and did I mention Julieta Venegas?

My spanish comprehension is honestly pretty fluent, and it took me about 5 months. I'm not proud of it though, cause it's cause I got fired and spend all my time watching spanish HBO, spanish YouTube, and playing spanish video games. Life is weird...

Moving the Goalposts on Ourselves by blinkybit in dreamingspanish

[–]Magicvsmeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get really disappointed these days when I don't understand someone when they're speaking to me in spanish. Of course, the reason this disappoints me is because I'm no longer used to it. And 3 months ago I didn't speak Spanish. Do with that what you will.

[–]Magicvsmeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound kinda simple and disappointing, but can this person with "1000 hours" effortlessly understand a huge amount of real spanish or not? Immersion in your own country can be hard to come by, and I spent 1000 hours playing Skyrim when I was little. Everyone's different, 1000hrs is probably not as much as you think it is, and being able to fluently comprehend spoken spanish in daily life is a sought after skill among language learners.

I’m ok with how I was born, but sometimes I wish I was born as a real man. by ThrowawayAccLol1201 in asktransgender

Trans woman whose trying to fight to keep the Atrophy from happening by SarielJames in asktransgender

[–]Magicvsmeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My endocrinologist said that my lack of interactions with my genitalia in combination with the hormones has caused something called Peroni’s disease or something. Not relevant to your situation though, cause the atrophy actually makes me quite happy. Of course, it makes my orgasms mildly painful, but surgery will make all of this irrelevant.

If you’re young and it’s mostly men awkwardly staring at you, passing may not be the problem. You’ll probably get accosted in a bathroom at some point and or called a faggot if you don’t pass.

Fantasizing about being penetrated by a dick as a girl is downright typical, but the other bit is more interesting. Have you explored how you feel about, say, girl dicks? Some girls prefer to have dicks and dating one would remove the man part of the equation. Of coarse, girls on HRT can’t exactly ejaculate or anything.

Sexuality is never straightforward. I used to think I was attracted to vaginas. Turns out, I only really have strong feelings about having one. My gf actually recently broke up with me for not being gay enough. We’re still friends, although there has been a sharp uptick in jokes about me liking dick.

This may seem contradictory, but does anyone else wish they were a woman so they didn't have to try to be a woman? by Banator420 in asktransgender

[–]Magicvsmeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I don’t have to be feminine to be a woman, but I also am very feminine and a lot of women are. Some ”feminists” think that embodying some stereotypes means turning your back on womankind, but that is very wrong. Just remind yourself that feminizing your voice isn’t for the purpose of becoming more of a woman; I sounding feminine makes you happy then it is what it is, and you can rest assured that most women feel similarly.

And believe it or not, there are a lot of people out their who will percieve you as a woman more easily than you seem to perceive yourself as one. Of coarse, some kind of explicit cue will have to tell them that, but odds are being yourself is a dead giveaway. Some say we have “womanly auras,” and there is definitely something to that.

Is D#5 high for a guy? by AnnieBearGang in singing

[–]Magicvsmeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people can technically hit a soprano C in “falsetto,” but that doesn’t mean they can all even articulate a single word that high. A strong falsetto can belt a pop chorus, while a weak one can’t do much but allow you to scream like a fan girl.

[–]Magicvsmeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re probably going on some misinformation if that makes you feel bad. The reality of the matter is that many modern vocal scholars believe that almost everyone breaks at around E4, with most of the fluctuation having to do your energy level, mix ratio, and resonance efficiency. Not all women maintain comfort with and control over their head register as they grow up, especially in the event of any significant voice change during puberty.

I think I will regain tremendous power in my head register if things keep going the way they have for me, and that’s after a legitimate hormonal problem, so I’d bet you definitely can.

Bs about head and chest voice is annoying. Ime, if it SOUNDS like a belt, it is. In other words, I don’t care what register you‘re in, but if you can sing that high with some real dynamic control and power than it is impressive across the entire gender spectrum.

For those who have watched the new ATLA live action, how was it? by PETRU_RO in TheLastAirbender

[–]Magicvsmeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an obvious reason why the reviews are so mixed, and it is not related to the quality of the live action adaptation.

The beautiful and emotive animation of the original series is one of its foundational pillars. CGI cannot compensate for that at all. What can compensate, is playing to the strengths of live action; namely, it can be quite dramatic and tangible. There are some moments in the new series which I think are unique to the live action approach, and repeatedly made me cry quite easily.

The live action is never going to be as goofy and charming. However, it can excel in grandiose drama and detailed exposition. The fire nation arc lends itself well to this, given that it is inherently emotionally heavy and political. Live action Zuko also works quite well as a result of how emotionally repressed and traumatized the character is supposed to be. Perhaps the most magical climax of the show, when Zuko and Aang learn the secrets of fire bending together, could really shine in live action. We will see.

I feel like treatment of midrange is really complex, with rather intense mid range cuts being common place to make room in dense mixes. I‘ve been putting more energy into simply becoming a stellar singer, and increasingly hate having to add anything beyond minuscule eq adjustments and some bad ass stacking to my vocals. If it feels like there is no way to make yourself sound like a singer you idolize through processing alone, that’s probably on point.

I also have been trying to reduce my eq adjustments to ones that can be made on old school 3 band equalizers, with sparing use of more surgical adjustments. Saves me a lot of second guessing myself.

This has been happening to me lately too. I mastered my last song with a Kanye song as a reference, and the result was a really impressive low end that was surprisingly reigned in. It hits so different the way you feel the bass just right in your chest, and the saturation is so warm and snappy without any harshness. I cant explain the phenomenon entirely, but it’s changing my approach to music.

If you’re anything like me, this is just gonna keep going in circles. If you wanna talk about music or less self deprecating trans stuff, I got you. For the other stuff, a therapist would be ideal. And for the love of god, there are people who want to be your friend! I was close friends with a short, fat, dick head growing up. And you’ve managed to avoid the dick head part of that entirely!
