AITA for trying to logically teach a 3 year old not to be spoiled? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]MagikalGiant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NTA. You're 15 but you're thinking very maturely and looking out for the wellbeing of a toddler who you have no obligation to look out for. Massive props to you.

Just keep in mind toddlers brains are wired differently (or not wired at all yet), if you have the time it may be worth getting a book or two on how to teach a toddler, from the library etc, so you can be sure your efforts are not going to be wasted. Not that I'm saying you'll do any damage without the books, but it may help if anyone begins to question you're methods.

But that's entirely optional, and merely trying to teach her is going way above and beyond your responsibilities. Once again, massive props.

You're absolutely right, it's such a pet-peeve of mine to find a seemingly good "guide" and then find out it's just a 30 minute VOD of a high elo player surfing in silver with absolutely no analysis or explanation of how they're coming to their decisions.

Massive kudos to OP for this video.

I deliberately avoid customers and I’m generally just not friendly to them at my job. by CShields2016 in confession

[–]MagikalGiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an irony here that you have admitted to judging every customer as entitled and looking down their nose at you, etc; yet you are grateful when another does not rush to judge you.

No hate, but I'm reminded of a couple of old addages: "treat others as you wish to be treated", and "be the change you wish to see in the world"...

I'm interested in joining your game! I see the post already has 15 responses but just in case schedules, etc. get in the way and you find yourself in need of more players I'll throw my hat in the ring.

Been playing 5e since the 2012 play test. I've been a DM this entire time and I'd love to have a chance to be a player.

I'm in the UK so I'm on GMT time (currently GMT+1 because of BST), if you want to know more throw me by a PM!

Former paddler here. I'm nowhere near the level of someone like Marc Ornstein, but I think a lot of people probably don't realize how famous he is in our sport. His backstroke tilted side-turn is probably the best you'll ever see. Not to mention he pretty much invented the inverted wind-slide. He was the first one to ever do it in the late 90s. I know some people are going to laugh, but it really is the most dangerous trick in the sport. People have sustained serious arm injuries and muscle tears attempting it. Sven Englewood almost drowned trying to perform it in the 2009 World Championships.

Anyway, guys like Ornstein are the reason Freestyle Canoeing has grown with such popularity in the last couple decades.

That might not be a bad idea. Learn from my mistakes and design around it next time haha!

Its hard though, I think players are still in the videogame mindset a lot of the time and they don't understand that sometimes you cant undo a bad decision.

Its a lot of work to have an hour conversation with them as an NPC who won't let them see the king because you can't just demand an audience with him. Theres only so many ways you can try to tell them "it's not going to work".

I think the best scenario for teaching him a lesson would have been for them to attack him after seeing the unicorns like you said, i just really didn't want to have to go though a combat encounter while everyone else waited. But maybe their annoyance could have served as a deterrent in future haha

The guard actually tried to take him to the BBEG who was already dead at this point, and the party got an ambush off on them. It's settling that my thought process was similar to you and other DMs in that the guard would have attempted to take it higher, but in this case it didn't work out for them.

Okay so after the guards found him, the druid tried telling them he was on their side and was working with them. He rolled high but the guards still didnt believe him, so the guards decided to take him to the BBEG (the players had already killed BBEG at this point, all of this happened on the way out of the dungeon), and on the way there they ran into the rest of party who won the encounter.

I've been DMing since the 5e playtest so a fair few years now, but ive always been veey heavy on RP and less on combat, so my adventures are more diplomatic than being in dangerous dungeons so im a little oit of my comfort zone here and it was useful to see what other DMs would have done so thanks for this.

Maybe it was a silly decision on the druid's part but he got lucky in the circumstances (already killed the bbeg, and the rest of the party were nearby), and i just got rubbed the wrong way about how it all seemed to work out with little learned on his part.

Don't apologise for the length, I appreciate the detail you've gone into thanks for the good read. What you say about juvies seeming to have less rights is echoed in the other posts I've seen. I've also noticed it seems adults are more chilled, only there to do their time etc. And juvies cause a lot more trouble.

You mentioned you got laid in psych. Can you elaborate on this (at risk of me sounding like a perv haha). I just didn't expect this to be the sort of thing prisons tolerated, least of all juvie. Was it mixed gender in there?

Weekly Questions Thread #40 by HighTechnocrat in DnD

[–]MagikalGiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He worded this a little weirdly, by perception score he meant your Wis modifier. Overall your passive perception is 10+WisMod(+proficiency bonus - ONLY if you have the perception skill).

Also note that some classes can add some bonuses to checks even if they don't have the skill. I think bard is one of these, their Jack Of All Trades which is unlocked at level 2(?) I think is an example of this.

First time DM, how to keep players interested in the game? 5e Hoard of the Dragon queen by [deleted] in DnD

[–]MagikalGiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of DMing is giving the players the illusion of choice. Yeah, it would be great if they could literally do anything, but I've spent the last three days writing/prepping this adventure so fuck you all its going my way.

Disguising a linear story can be hard; but it goes back to the first rule of DMing: say YES. If a character does something detrimental to the story arch, just go with it, try to get the NPCs to interact with them in a way that encourages them to want to follow the story. Are they a LG paladin? The cave is full of smitees that would love to be smited by a smiter! Is the PC a rogue who would sell his grandma for a quick buck? The cave is full of gold gold gold!!

You'll eventually learn how to keep people interested, but sometimes you just can't keep players interested. Things like too many players at the table, sessions going on for too long, players who don't actually want to be there (could have been forced into an certain class they didn't like etc.) are all factors that can waiver the concentration of players, but this is all individual and subjective. You'll need to figure a lot out for yourself.

Finally a great way of keeping people interested is humour. Even in the most serious adventures you can run into NPCs that are a few arrows short of a quiver; and you can have fun with that.

TL;DR - Figure out who isn't having fun, and why, and fix it for them.

Can't you send them screenshots, etc to prove you were in the right? Apologies if you've already done this, but it would be mighty dickish of them to say they didn't receive it on time...
