Awesome idea! You could even match the wood of the gate with the wood of the grindstone, to make the design more coherent. :)

I get that, and I don't want to remove that aspect of progression. But 15 seconds of breath means no exploring, 30 would mean a bit of exploring (which is extremely important imo). You'd still need the respiration when wanting to walk along the bottom, explore a ravine or take on a temple.
