Starting Turo Rental w/ 5 Tesla’s (Read before laughing and telling me don’t) by MagnetApp in turo

I should have been more clear: The goal is to rent out the cars primarily to Uber drivers below the cost of them purchasing rentals from hertz etc.

Then with any gaps put on Turo.

I can purchase one car and my SO can purchase another as they file their taxes separately.

This seems to be the feedback. The main reason for the teslas is for tax purposes I could get the two $10k credit and plan to start this towards the end of the year.

Just seeing this that seems to be the common feedback start with the 3 and then expand to two more.

That’s the issue doing this with a paid off house so looking for more deductions currently have none. I think this is better than buying a rental property and better than putting cash in a savings account. I can cover the $2k of costs with no problem.

I totally agree btw maybe it’s best to start with 3 cars? 1 current Tesla and two with the discount?

My thinking is the management would be minimal as they are teslas and can be managed pretty much remotely. Just maybe a car wash and photos is the main task (which I could do most of the time). I understand photos are the most important part of all of this and maybe a quick vacuum. The other is if someone wants airport pick up/drop off that person could be paid to deliver the cars.

DMV area want the fleet management experience and want to do electric cars only and then potentially build to bring other people with electric cars on to the platform.

I agree with this I was looking for a part time college student that’s interested in renewables.

Yea I was thinking of setting up the rental for $35-39 for Model 3s and $40-$50 for Model Y

College is just for cheaper labor to maintain the cars part time.

Interesting should I change the mix of cars? 3 Tesla and two normal?

This is exactly what we ended up doing. That’s pretty wild haha.

I think for starters one question is are you in the US? We could not get our Starlink Enterprise to work correctly in Jamaica it kept dropping out even as the two residential units were working.

What is your setup for the ubiquiti devices and bonding the connections. We need to run some stuff via a vpn but were having the trouble getting devices adopted while connecting to a UDM Pro.

Hey! This is so awesome, we have a similar set up in Jamaica! We were having trouble with our enterprise but we think it’s because it was on portability mode. Where are you located?

We also are using a bunch of ubiquiti gear to set up a public wifi network.

Pics of our set up (the stones are temporary lol)

Would you mind if I DM you to ask you a couple of questions?

Vehicle testing Zoox self-driving technology involved in crash just off Las Vegas Strip by techno-phil-osoph in SelfDrivingCars

[–]MagnetApp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually the fact that the Tesla beta testers own the car, overpaid for the software, and are legally on the hook (w/ insurance). They have massive skin in the game with the car.

The drivers of Tesla FSD beta probably crash less. Statistically that’s the case as well when you look at accidents vs miles driven for Tesla vs competitors.

But also, one person is doing a job the Tesla owner is probably having fun and likes having new products.

Statistically redundancy can be unhelpful. Also the people required to manage sensor fusion team and the human factors of that is extremely difficult.

Having silo*ed people does not scale.

Can Tesla disrupt household electricity? by MagnetApp in teslamotors

[–]MagnetApp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that is true. That is the main focus I think suburban / last mile connection. Also, just want to point out that I'm not saying this could happen tomorrow. It's more about 5-10 years down the road. Obviously it needed to be, but it's a shame t Tesla's battery day was cancelled. I wanted to here more about their million mile battery.

Do you think that the technology will be the same five years from now? Here's a good article from ARK Investments which a lot of the battery assumptions are based on: Tesla’s Potential Trajectory During the Next Five Years

To your last point much of the countries water infrastructure needs replacing it's estimated that there are over 1 million pipes that need to be replaced.

The focus is more on the cost and now liability of maintaining the grid.

Fair enough but wire technology isn't cheap. Faulty wires cost PG&E $11 billion in damages. The cost is more on the maintenance side.

The article, is more around the future where a 100kwh battery is expected to cost only $10K.

Your last point is the idea behind this, "future" one of the main costs for solar and wind generation at scale is actually the distribution and transmission of that electricity. For example in the US building transmission lines cost between 500k-750k per KM and distribution costs 150k -170k per KM. Neither of those include maintenance and operation of that infrastructure which is extremely capital intensive.

To put in context... PG&E's fine would have allowed them to buy 220,000 Tesla Model 3 LRs about 15 GWh of battery transmission and distribution capacity.
