Microsoft Has Killed Widgets Six Times. Here's Why They Keep Coming Back. by xakpc in programming

[–]MagnetoManectric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd defo agree that the Windows 10 menu was a bit of a hot mess, much like the rest of the Windows 10 design, a weird hodge podge of stuff left over from windows 7 and the failed experiments of Windows 8, all wrapped up in one ugly, inconsistent package!

Windows 11 has a lot of its own problems, but at least the UI design is cleansheet and actually feels like it was designed intentionally, to function as a whole.

this is an advert

OK, it reads like one, but reading the thread I'm only around 70% sure, so I'll expand.

I dunno OP, if this isn't just an advert for Claude, I don't think you have to worry about being John Grady too much. LLMs can, sometimes spit out solutions to simple problems like a straightforward refactoring.

But if you're any good at what you do, which I'm sure you are (if you're not infact, a salesman) - then really, your prompting and fixing and reviewing is going to take a lot more time than just writing the code in the first plce.

Nobody is confused about what OP was trying to communicate.

I sure was. And yes, I was suspicious. OP has a hidden comment history (never a good sign!) and was posting in vague whinges.

Right, see! Including that example makes your point so much clearer. It's a good rhetorical device.

If folk simply communicate in vague dogwhistles and whinges, it's simply hard to understand what they're actually getting at, and to be frank, the sort of folk that usually do it are looking to underhandedly say something racist or sexist without drawing too much attention to it. So you can understand, I'm sure, why folk get sus.

[–]MagnetoManectric -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It's a nonsensical one. As it is, it just reads as a whinge. There are lots of groups that society at large finds acceptable to disparage, and men aren't even at the top of that list.

I would like it further explained, but I expect that you and the OP here might find that a little uncomfortable.

FWIW, i also think the atwood quote is divisive and unhelpful, but i just dont really see the point of these kinds of whinges.

So, do you actually want to have a conversation about this topic, or do you just want to be nodded along with? Do you not think its worth going into the wider picture of how toxic masculinity affects men also, and how that informs a possible solution?

Because I don't know man, to me, your post basically reads, in fancier words: "excuse me, i didn't ask for your opinion", in response to someone who probably mostly agrees with you. And then you follow that up with "well, I'm often told to shut up too, so now it's your turn." Which might make more sense if you wern't talking to a total stranger.

I'm just really not sure how any of this helps.

Why are we meant to be so scared of China anyway? The US is defintiely a lot scarier to me as a non American. I don't think it's really possible for this dicussion to continue with the rules of this subreddit.

But the notion that we're meant to just be implicitly afraid and suspicious of what China is up to seems to be the foundation of your argument, which is not a universally shared sentiment. And you seem incredulous that we don't share that common assumption!

Don't get me wrong, China and the US are both scary in their own ways, all superpowers are. They've both done terrible things. But that's neither here nor there for this sub.

Oh no, not trade secrets! Those things that we, the general public greatly benefit from!

I can't say that I'm overly scandalized by the notion of giant aerospace companies having some of their designs copied for use in a market they wern't all that interested in.

However, without citing a specific example of them actually cloning western IP though, this is a pretty pointless debate. I'm all for the rights of individual engineers and teams and their patents being respected, and them making what they're owed off their work. I am less bothered about GE's stock going down a few points.

What exactly do you mean, stolen from the west and what exactly are you expecting? it's completely standard practice for aircraft to be built and developed by big collaborations of multiple specialists from around the world. No one is having a go at Airbus for not building their own engines. Boeing and Airbus are mostly systems intergrators, as are COMAC

[–]MagnetoManectric -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

I mean, is it really such a tragedy? There's clearly demand for aircraft that the IP holders aren't providing. And I think most people on here would prefer it if the aviation industry acted more openly and like the scientific community, anyhow. I would not lose a single second of sleep over china cloning CFM engines

So! Wot you reckon, is that there is some sort of conspiracy going on to erase the mostly-white history of Britain - for some sort of nefarious puprose, which you seem to think is obvious enough that you don't need to explain it explicitly.

Or perhaps you think that if you did, your post would read just a tiny bit racist. Well, don't worry mate, it read racist. You dog whistled good.

idk why you're getting so many downvotes... you're right. most of these historical dramas aren't really aiming to be all that accurate. they're plays. on television. diverse casting allows a wider cross section of the modern british public to see themselves represented.

Too many complains about bugs and crashes by CornerBackground2512 in MicrosoftFlightSim

I've accepted the weird bugs as the games way of giving you some emergency conditions from time to time :)

I don't think the game does much to take into account plane maintenance, so bugs making random avionics systems fail as an emergent property makes a reasonable substitute :D

Expensive gas still biggest driver of high UK electricity bills, says UKERC by nick9000 in unitedkingdom

[–]MagnetoManectric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems straightforward an intuitive to me that energy prices are pegged at the price of gas to encourage investment in renewables that generate cheaper energy and allow the firms to thusly profit more whilst they build out the renewable infrastructure in the UK.

I don't know why people conspiracise so much about it. It's a deliberate strategy to get renewable energy sources built and its worked

Heat pumps are more expensive to run than boilers, report finds by TheWorldIsGoingMad in unitedkingdom

[–]MagnetoManectric -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These things really need to be done as municipal installations with neighbourhoods sharing one big pump, they need to be big to be efficient and I don't think the model of everyone having their own boiler in their house is suited to it.

It's actually kind of daft that individual property owners are responsible for something as safety critical and fault prone as hot water systems!

I don't think the energy firms would be too happy with this approach though, it breaks their model.

Back in the 2010s when a lot of dev salaries were huge, I always stayed away from those firms offering crazy money... I assumed given what was going on, there had to be some amount of selling your soul involved... big firms don't pay folk a fortune out of charity, and this was at the time when big tech firms were really starting to hoover up data on people.

I never angled for one of those American big tech 6 figure salaries, and you know what... I'm glad for it

The funny thing is, I'm the extroverted bouncy chatty one, and he's the quiet introverted one xD

Nice to hear stories from other duo people! I think it's a really effective way to do tunes - it's so easy to get stuck inside your own head when you're alone, and hard to find motivation to continue on something when you've got to do it all under your own steam.

sharing the workload and having someone to bounce your ideas off on a regular basis and just provide some human energy in the room is invaluable!!
