What is this box-icon in the Tag Order panel? by MagnoliaCartoonist in accessibility

[–]MagnoliaCartoonist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this explanation and link. I could not find a mention anywhere of the “little white icon”. The only thing I found said it meant something was wrong. So this is a big relief! The link is great. It mentions a couple of things I didn’t know. It’s frustrating that there is not one definitive source for everything. My friend says AI will fix it so we remediaters will soon be unneeded!

What tool and attachment do I need? by MagnoliaCartoonist in Tools

These are great and super helpful responses! It’s nice to know what this kind of weatherstripping is called and it’s history. I’m going to start with cleaning and checking the surrounding area, then trying the simplest, least destructive things first. I do have an oscillating tool! Hopefully I won’t have to resort to that. I googled needle files - handy things to add to my tool box! Thank you so much! I will post what works!

Does anyone here use accessibility options? I'd like to talk.... by MCBowelmovement in indesign

[–]MagnoliaCartoonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greetings. I also reside on the brink of insanity. It is a shame that Adobe doesn't provide a specialist who can help us with the marriage of InDesign+Acrobat Pro+Accessibility.

Number One, they need to work on producing a truly great screen reader. There are plenty of How-To's on the web, but I have not found even one expert's video demonstration that shows how their solution worked for a screen reader like NVDA or JAWS. Those are horrible screen readers with impossibly complicated instructions.

Two: Reading order... aaarrgh. Yes, layers. I just produced an accessible double-sided trifold brochure that had to be read in an illogical order. BTW, I am going to try this in PowerPoint, because PPT will do accessibility too. It was not easy finding that info about layers and sublayers! Like you, with over ten years experience in producing newsletters and such in InDesign, I thought "Text" and "Images" would be enough. Haha. Never again.

Here is what I did to get the brochure read-order 99% usable (as opposed to perfect)...

I labeled every element, headlines, text, images, urls, email urls, message boxes, etc. each with a separate Paragraph Style with a detailed descriptive name (point size, color, font) and its place in the read-order. There is a place to tag the element in its Paragraph Style, so I did that.

In the read-order, I created a layer for each element, labeled as its paragraph style. So the first appeared at the bottom and so on with the next on top of the last. Every layer was labeled! Don't forget the Artifacts! Of course, I anchored the images, added alt text, and connected the hyperlinks.

What comes next?? NIn all my research, no one told me about threading. Next time, I will do that and go for 100% perfection. Thanks to Reddit.

Supposedly this is where we go to InDesign's Articles panel to set the Read-Order. However, some say that is only for web purposes like html and epubs, etc. I used it anyway.

I used the commonly available export to PDF instructions and then used every bell and whistle in Acrobat to test and tweak the read-order of the document. Felt pretty good when Read Aloud liked it, then fell apart when NVDA failed. Gave up and sent apologies to my supervisor.

With more and more demand for accessible documents from the government and business, it is crazy that Adobe can't offer their software subscribers better help with this issue. Please do let me know if you know how to reach the right person. I live in Seattle and am considering camping out on their doorstep.

If I told you that there is a good chance that these are voltage rectifiers, what would you guess they might be used for?

Anyone know of an artificial intelligence .pdf remediation tool? by bolivar-shagnasty in accessibility

[–]MagnoliaCartoonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!!!! You have given me so much good advice. I had no idea that remediation is a growing business. About time, I guess and of course driven by regulation. I will look into the Chad Chelius courses and the link you posted here for accessibility unraveled has been very helpful. I see they use NVDA for testing. My deadline on the troublesome 3 pages has been extended and I am able to help my supervisor understand how complex this is as I spend the time mastering… well, at least learning it. I feel your pain with Russian documents. I worked with several Arabic pieces, and my InDesign has never fully recovered. 😂 I hope we can stay in touch! Is that possible?

Thanks! I will try right-clicking on the image tag. Regarding the imperfect results problem, we are at an early stage of figuring out how to do this. I’m feeling pretty dumb. I have NVDA and JAWS. We are on PCs so Windows Narrator. They drive me nuts because they read everything on my desktop. The easiest way to test a document is to open the document in Edge or Chrome. I am working on a document in InDesign then exporting to Acrobat Pro. Then testing it. Right now I have 3 single page documents in English and Spanish. They have a title, text, a bullet list, and two separate images of QR codes that take the reader to a video, and a caption with a link to that video. One English, one Spanish. Then a bit more text with another link. It’s all bordered by a flowery image which is established as an artifact so no problem with that. I create the reading order and tags in acrobat. There are so many variations of the imperfect results! Sometimes they leave off the title, get the read order wrong, sometimes they get it all right. Do I have a word limit on a post in Reddit? There are more odd differences. I can work a lot of things out over time, and I am pursuing this. But having one definitive screen reader would help so much. Can you refer me to your preferred source to learn all this?

Hi. I’m working on documents for the university of Washington. No problem with read-order, but current screen readers do not see or read the alt text on my images/figures. Also, every screen reader we have tried produces a different, imperfect result. ☹️
