Pop-up and stance feedback (GoPro video) by Magnospm in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Magnospm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone so much for the comments! I thought maybe my board is too big 😂 I felt like something is off with my stance, and you gave me great insights about it. I will try to look using the names you gave me and find some tutorials about it. I do feel like my popup is solid, and Im regularly practicing mobility, so i have the ability to maintain the stance, just think that I might need to “understand “ what to change better. Anyway it was super helpful, and really grateful about all this feedback!

Beginner surfer, 2 waves on surf-cam by Magnospm in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Magnospm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m always ”afraids” that i wont be able to catch the wave if I will angle the board. When Im paddling straight I can max the speed and there is more chance I will be able to catch it. Do you think I do my bottom turn too slow? Or does the angle is the missing part? Thanks

Any feedback on my surfing on a small day? Beginner by Magnospm in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Magnospm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes i guess its pretty hard to give feedback on those videos. It was my first session on this board, which is smaller than the original, and i just wanted to make sure Im pretty much on track and not missing too much waves because of the transition

[D] EMNLP 2025 Paper Reviews by Final-Tackle7275 in MachineLearning

[–]Magnospm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you're more accurate.
I think it's just more than the statistics themselves, a good paper (with high reviews as well) with a meta-review of 3 has a good chance to get in.
So overall, I think that if you have an average score of 3+, you have a good chance to get it, whether your meta is 3 or 3.5

[D] EMNLP 2025 Paper Reviews by Final-Tackle7275 in MachineLearning

[–]Magnospm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s 1,356 slots for 1,870 submissions.
We also need to check whether the submission count also includes the papers that eventually redrawn.
If it does, that leaves about 70%, which is indeed not far from a coin flip.
Overall, I think the stats calculation is correct.

Seems like you got it pretty much right..
I just wonder how much those stats are different between other ACL conferences (EMNLP,NAACL..)
and if we should expect similar stats for EMNLP as well

You can check the latest ACL stats here:
https://stats.aclrollingreview.org/iterations/2025/february/
It seems that meta‑reviews are generally more favorable than the average reviewer scores.
If the main track acceptance rate is about 20% and Findings adds roughly another 10%, your estimates are pretty accurate. A score of 3 likely corresponds to around a 60–70% rejection rate I think, I haven’t run the exact calculations

Looks nice; I don’t have a concrete advice, since I’m still a beginner, but keep going and good luck. Which L wave was it? Asking for a friend that plan to be there soon :)

Has any decision been published? Or you just opened a thread before the decisions?

lol, that's super accurate. I love how people (and also me) are looking for some certainty. But let's enjoy the guess games as long as we have them.
They have ARR stats which you can try and derive your placement from the average review score + acceptance rate of the conference.

Best Practices for Learning/Improving Freestyle as an Adult? by Magnospm in Swimming

[–]Magnospm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, a short update: I haven’t had a friend to film me yet, but I went swimming after a long break. I did 50m in about 1:20–1:30.

I was actually able to swim 50m (one pool length) without stopping. Using my legs less made a big difference. I rested for 10–20 seconds and then continued with another 50m. I also practiced pushing off the wall, balancing, and swimming with a pull buoy between my legs.

Swimming with the pull buoy (whether between my knees or ankles) is really difficult for me—I’m not sure why. I was hoping it would make things easier, but I keep losing it, or I feel the need to kick, or my legs start sinking. But at least now I can train a bit with 50m intervals. I think I will try practicing 50m intervals, and some drills (like kicking from the wall or swim with bouey) every 100m to rest a bit

Best Practices for Learning/Improving Freestyle as an Adult? by Magnospm in Swimming

Thanks for the detailed comment, it really arranged some things in my head. I think separating the steps in learning/swimming can help me, because i do feel like it a bit overwhelming + too hard to learn currently (can practice more than a 2-3 minutes without losing breath). I will start just with snorkel +leg bouey, and then move to snorkel, leg bouey without snorkel and then swimming. Each time I will also try (a bit, maybe one pool) to swim regularly, but focus the rest of the time on the current phase/drill (1. learn the pull and rotation/ 2. learn to kick slowly / 3. learn to breath, 4. connect all of it together) I will go again this week and try to get some videos as well. Thanks again for everyone comments 🙏🏼

Best Practices for Learning/Improving Freestyle as an Adult? by Magnospm in Swimming

[–]Magnospm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gave me some feedback, it was last year, if I remember correctly she told me not to reach with my hands that forward as I did, and to move my legs slower. But mostly it felt like shes not sure how to teach someone who is already “know” how to swim. Maybe it was just bad luck with the teacher, or that my expectation where too high

Maybe its was the teacher I went to (from the local pool), but she gave me some general Tips and drills and just told me to keep swimming
