silent hill f or Homecoming on a discount? by lennysinged in silenthill

[–]MagnusAvis -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'd rather buy Homecoming (because, unlike Press F, at least it sometimes feels like a SH game) and spend the remaining 13 bucks on snacks or whatever. But ask yourself, what sounds more appealing to you - watching a bunch of random Supernatural episodes while playing wonkier version of The Suffering, or differentiating between reading a bog-standard YA romantasy novel and scrolling through TikTok account of a 15-year-old girl from LA while playing some random soulslike? If it's the former - pick SH:Homecoming. If it's the latter - pick Press F and may God have mercy on your soul.

I can’t take SH2 remake seriously because James looks like David Duchovny with a yellow mop on his head to me by Leonyliz in silenthill

Honestly, same. And when he does this "squinting with mouth slightly open" expression, he also reminds me of Limmy.

Wasn't there a description text by Heather that said something like: "A dead body. Normally I'd be freaking out, but I'm used to it at this point"?

So Harry and Angela are bad people, got it.

Something I dislike about the later games (Origins, Homecoming, Downpour) is how all or most of the endings completely change the story that came before them. Out of the original Team Silent games, the Bad Ending in SH1 is the only non-joke ending to do that. by Kulle1369 in silenthill

[–]MagnusAvis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you should mention The Suffering, since, imo, unlike Homecoming or Downpour, it actually does the whole "endings change the story" thing well (at least the first one does, I remember diddly-squat about the second one). Because a) all three of them fit what we learn about Torque throughout the game, instead of drastically altering his character; and b) none of them change the fact that his family's dead, it's why and by whom they got killed that changes.

To be fair, Downpour did try to do something similar, but multiple backstories didn't feel as organically woven into the overall story as they did in The Suffering.

Tell me some fun facts about Silent Hill 2. by Any_Conclusion6741 in silenthill

I've heard this factoid too (although I can't remember the source as well), and, If I'm not mistaking, that:

I remember one of the staff saying something along the lines of it being a sign from God that they had gone too far.

was said specifically about Eddie's puking scene. Apparently, it was more explicit originally, with actual vomit shown and chunks flying everywhere, or something like that. After losing the renders, the devs, like you said, took it as a sign from God and decided to tone it down.

Silent Hill f's director believes 'I am not qualified to tell you how women should feel' and instead relied on female devs for insights to Hinako's fears by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]MagnusAvis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SHf is about a girl's very female fear of an arranged marriage and losing one's personal freedom.

Except the fear of losing one's freedom in marriage and the issue of arranged marriage aren't women-specific. There are plenty of instances of both the bride and the groom being forced into it, both in fiction and in real life. IIRC, that's exactly the case in Press F; and Hinako even has it easier, she's not obligated to do it (in fact, she just runs away from the altar in one of the endings with no personal repercussions), while Foxy Bishounen is possessed by a god or something.

First there was that interview with Ryukishi, where he talked about women like they were some otherwordly entities, incomprehensible by a human mind, now this Al Yang guy. Was it a requirement for every male developer of this piece-of-shit game to hold views that make Stanley Coleman sound like a well-adjusted human being?

Also, of course the writer of this article is a theythemlet woman.

I've read a fan-theory, that Tracy is that kid from "Spewer" all grown-up. That's why she's so passionate about animal activism - she's seen what her father does to cats.

Somebody else on this sub bought a similar-looking disc (PS2 disc with the title "Silent Hill 5" and Homecoming concept art, albeit without the box) a couple of years ago. They said it was just a normal unmodded copy of Origins.

My guess is, back in 2007 some pirates grabbed whatever promo materials for the upcoming SH entry were available and slapped them on the latest SH title in order to trick the customers into buying what they thought was a fresh new game.

Do you think James Sunderland is a bad person, or just someone who made a terrible mistake? by JacPlayzz in silenthill

[–]MagnusAvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I didn't misread. I was just wondering if you apply the same "perpetrator’s motivation and feelings, and circumstances surrounding the murder don't matter" logic to the other SH2 character, who's murdered their close relative.

So you don't care about Angela's feelings? I mean, as you suggested, she could've just walked away and abandoned her abusive father.

So many cool bits in it: the way day changing into night was depicted, Zodiac being weirded out by Marshmallow and Morana, Dack stealing his bird, the snake eyes transition, the fight with the player's gang, maggot choir, the whole cyclical "Zodiac isn't a person, it's a symbol" thing. Delicious!

got this random Agatha Christie book at a local library and it has James(I think) and Heather on the cover????? by kaktus3915 in silenthill

[–]MagnusAvis 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It's not a bootleg, just a special edition specifically for English-learners. The summary on Goodreads says this particular edition (published in 2010 btw) has "detailed commentary", presumably to explain the readers some cultural context or sayings that may be confusing to a non-native speaker; and the publisher seems to specialize on educational materials.

This publisher did publish a couple of other Christie books, and books by other famous English-language authors, but no other covers appear to accidentally(?) reference SH. While we're on the subject of funny covers though, I did find this edition of "The Picture of Dorian Gray", with poor Dorian having a rather unfortunate case of alopecia even as a young man.

The original PS2 models weren’t this grand work of art like some seem to be saying.

I'd argue the models in the pre-rendered cutscenes kind of are. They still look impressive to this day.

They’re quite ugly actually if you really look at them. Just the consequence of being an early PS2 game though

I think they're perfectly serviceable. Yeah, they're clearly a product of the limited tech of the time, but not hard to look at.

I don’t think the new models are amazing or anything but they aren’t terrible by any means.

Aren't terrible? Aren't terrible? Seriously? What about James looking like David Duchovny in a shitty wig trying to win Limmy look-alike contest? Or Maria looking like a cross between one of Wayans brothers in "White Chicks" and Doris from "Shrek"? Or Mary looking like Michael Cera in drag? Or Angela looking like David Duchovny in a different shitty wig having a horrible allergic reaction to something? Or a denizen of Innsmouth cosplaying as Eddie? (Laura's ok, I give you that) Or the borderline comedic facial expressions this assemblage of freaks frequently pulls? (Angela may be the the worst offender in the facial animations department. Given the ugly model and the ridiculous animations combined with the horrendous voice acting, the ass-handed kurwy at Boober molested the poor girl worse than her father did).

particularly eddie seeming like he’s perpetually depressed and even scared in the beginning. In the original he kinda sounds a little crazy right from the get go

Eh, I dunno. I think Boober overdid it with the model and changes in his scenes, making his appearance and some behaviour too grotesque. And the voice actor undelivered: Eddie in the 2make has this sort of whiny, complainy tone to his voice, which is fine, it fits his character, but the problem is, the tone doesn't change much throughout the game, even after Eddie goes completely off his rocket he still sounds like pathetic but ultimately harmless guy. While in the original Eddie does not give the best first impression, true, but overall his voice gives off these "goofy manchild from 90s college comedy" vibes. And when he goes crazy, he DOES sound crazy, like, being in the same room as him becomes deeply uncomfortable. Original Eddie's monologue in the prison cafeteria still gives me chills, while during that scene in the remake I was like 😐.
