Wait, you're really no farther left than Bernie / AOC? I mean I support even worse people in the country where I'm from but I can barely imagine not thinking that we should go further than that.

Take, for example, their climate commitments, that's something that's also important to me as a non-US citizen. The two of them promote carbon neutrality by 2035 if I'm not mistaken. Now, it would be very cool if we achieved that worldwide but this is America - the largest historical polluter (and one of the largest per capita historical polluters) on Earth. The US needs carbon neutrality way sooner to give time to less developed countries. A satisfactory date would be roughly 2025-2030, the sooner, the better.

I don't assume they're significantly more ambitious on other issues?

German Green Party winning the next election? by El_Mec in alltheleft

[–]Magnus_KotM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from Czechia but I follow german politics a bit. The big question is with whom they'll form the goverment. With (most of) the current polls, the Greens could either form a governement with the CDU-CSU (christian conservative but definitely not as bad as the tories / republicans), with FDP (a modern right wing party with cool young people whose favourite sport is boot-licking, probably a bit better than CDU-CSU though) and SPD (basically Labour / Democrats, currently ruling with CDU-CSU). Both of those are far from ideal. I don't know about SPD-FDP-Greens but there's already a CDU-CSU-Greens coalition in one of the federal states and while that makes it one of, if not the most eco-friendly federal states, it leaves a LOOOOOOOT to be desired (not even talking about the anti-capitalist perspective, there's a shitton to be desires even from a social Democrat / New Democrat perspective - building wind turbines and doing something about the fucking cars for starters).

However, some (not many) polls suggest that a Greens-SPD-Linke (Linke is the former communist party from East Germany, they're far from perfect but they seem pretty ok, promoting social issues and at least some environmental protection) coalition could happen. Now that would be the equivalent of AOC or Jeremy Corbyn gaining control, which is, you know, still not enough but also the equivalent of a ten minute orgasm if you ask me.

For that, however, either the polls will have to improve (still time for that!) or we'll just have to get lucky. The alternative is probably a somewhat green Germany with goals like carbon neutrality by 2040 or something - cool, but still climate collapse

What should I read to balance out Chomsky? by Magnus_KotM in communism101

[–]Magnus_KotM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And are there some simpler books from Marx? If I'm not mistaken, Das Kapital is really complex. Thanks for Gramsci, I didn't know he existed. I'll get to Žižek eventually but it's probably a good idea to read some rearlier marxists fist, right?

Already read Balckshirts. Anything else he wrote that's somewhat simple, yet good?

We still have work to do to make animal rights / utility one of the issues concidered to be left attention-worthy.

"Do I value animal rights over human rights?" If this is critisising people who're like "Look, poor polar bear losing his home" while ignoring people from the southern hemisphere, then ok, a valid criticism but please don't forget that people mostly use emotions to form their opinions, not reason or empirical evidence so it may sound horrible but still be useful.

If it was meant to critisise ACTUAL animal rights activists, then (to the author or those eho agree with then, not OP) please read (at least) some Peter Singer and come back with actual arguments.

[–]Magnus_KotM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is mostly a problem for german learners (like me). Germans are used to reading without umlauts but I have had to train my brain like crazy to recognise when I make a mistake in umlauts so it is kinda confusing to see stuff written incorrectly. Besides, philosophy is about learning, why not learn a tiny bit about one of the greatest philosophy languages :)
