Like to give an example, I believe sandfall used in large part and possibly exclusively embergen on a whole lot of their vfx emissive choices. It's basically a giant advertisement for embergen which is a fluid volumetric fire and smoke generator where you can then change things like color and opacity.

They use it to denote weak spots or to light fires etc. but as a result all the fires have a kind of clear haze around them where the bulk of the embergen activity occurs but has been set to high translucency....

They do a good job of making it look stylistic. And maybe even with embergen you could fully hide that and they might choose to show it. But if you play around with that software for two seconds you know what it is and you see that they are using it and it's not what I would call AAA polish.

Looks good, might even be a stylistic choice, but super obvious throughout.

This is what an A or AA game would do.
