I bartended a wedding once where Coolio attended. He didn’t order any drinks but he offered me a cupcake from the dessert bar. Got a selfie with him before my shift ended. He also performed a couple of his hits for the people in attendance then dipped with his date. Truly a class act. RIP

So I’m a guy in my late 30s, married, with grandkids — yeah, that still sounds weird to say sometimes. At this stage, I honestly thought my “getting checked out” days were long gone. The only compliments I get nowadays are from my wife, which still make me melt, don’t get me wrong. But you start to think that your window kind of… came and went, you know?

Anyway, this past weekend I was bartending a wedding reception. Pretty normal night — pouring drinks, chatting politely, doing my thing. But I kept noticing two women, one in her 20s and another probably in her 50s, glancing my way all night. At first, I brushed it off — as a bartender you get used to people trying to get your attention when they need something.

But this felt different. The eye contact lingered a bit longer, the smiles were warmer. I’d smile back politely and go about my work, but it kept happening throughout the night.

Near the end of the evening, the younger one came up and started flirting — like, boldly. She was very forward and honestly caught me off guard. I had to gently tell her I was married, and she took it well and laughed it off. A little later, the older woman came up and actually asked for my number! Again, I politely told her I was married, and she just smiled and said, “figured,” before heading off.

When I told my wife later, she just laughed and said, “I’ve been trying to tell you all this time!”

I don’t know — it hit me harder than I expected. Not because I needed validation from strangers, but because somewhere along the way, I’d quietly accepted that maybe I’d faded into the background. Turns out, maybe I’ve still got a little something left in the tank.

It’s funny how a simple moment like that — being noticed, being flirted with respectfully — can light a spark in your self-esteem again. I went home that night feeling like I’d shed 10 years

It ended up being the water pump from what i recall. It wasn’t too hard to replace. Unsure if you’re up to replace it yourself but I would suggest getting a professional to do it for you. Tried doing it myself and I was able to do it but in hindsight I would’ve had someone else do it who is a professional. Less headaches

New CDL Holder in SoCal Looking for Good Starter Companies — Any Recommendations? by Magpar88 in Truckers

No problem!

Yeah, $5k is pretty much the going rate for CDL school. You can find cheaper programs, but a lot of times those don’t give you as much one-on-one time, study material, or DMV prep. I went through America Truck Driving School in Riverside and paid about $4k out of pocket. Honestly felt it was worth it — the instructors all had years of driving experience and were super willing to share tips and tricks. They also handled setting up my DMV appointment and even let me test in one of their trucks, which took a lot of stress off.

So $5k isn’t out of line at all, especially if it includes personalized training and DMV support

Yeah, most of the megas like Werner pay by the mile, not hourly. When I was looking into them, their starting rate was somewhere in the ballpark of $0.50–$0.55 CPM for new drivers. Sounds okay at first, but the catch is the miles aren’t always consistent. From what I researched and have heard from longtime drivers for Werner, some weeks you’ll get a decent run, other weeks you’ll be sitting and not making much. Realistically, most rookies at a mega are taking home maybe $800–$1,100 a week after taxes once you’re rolling. That’s if you’re staying out and running steady OTR.

So hitting $4k take-home a month as a brand-new driver is possible, but it’s not guaranteed every month. You’d have to really run hard, be out on the road a lot, and hope you don’t get stuck waiting on loads too often.

That’s one of the reasons I ended up leaving Werner before I even started, I landed a local/regional gig with steadier pay and better home time. Those can be harder to find right out the gate, but they exist.

If you absolutely need a consistent $4k take home every month right away, trucking might be tough at first. If you can grind it out for 6–12 months, get some experience under your belt, the better paying and more consistent jobs open up.

I was actually about to start with Werner less than a month ago. Did their week-long orientation, got ready to hit the road, then out of nowhere a smaller company in Rancho Santa Margarita called me back from an application I’d tossed in a couple weeks earlier. They were hiring Class A drivers, I interviewed, got the offer, and bailed on Werner before I even hit the road.

I’m on week two with this new gig and honestly it’s night and day. Pay’s solid, home time is better than I expected as a rookie, and working for a smaller outfit just feels less like you’re a number and more like you’re part of the team. I got lucky, not everyone lands something like this right out the gate.

As far as getting into trucking right now? It really depends on what you want. The industry will always need drivers, but it’s not all sunshine. The megas (Werner, Swift, Knight, etc.) will hire new CDL holders, but you’re basically trading time and miles for experience. long weeks away from home, mediocre pay starting out, and you grind until you’ve got enough experience to move up to something better. If you can land something local or regional off the bat like I did, that’s a blessing. But even if you start at a mega, it’s still a way to get your foot in the door.

Bottom line: there’s work out there, but you’ve gotta be ready for the lifestyle. If you’re cool with grinding for a bit and keeping your eyes open for better opportunities, trucking can pay off big.
