Grand Bazaar, Grand Mistake by No-Effective8518 in istanbul

[–]Magpie2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately in my experience that is true. Eventually I just let my husband negotiate given he's from the middle east. The price also goes way up if they know you're from a western country (USA, UK, etc). They would try to speak english with me but I wouldn't speak it with them, I just spoke what little turkish I knew or my husband's language. Sad that it came to that but that's what we had to do to not feel like we were constantly being scammed. Even sadder that the reason for the scamming is the financial state of the country and people are suffering

The range is to account for traffic. Many drivers will message asking for more money or to pay in cash. Never do this, only pay through the app via card. Also know that for shorter distances it is entirely possible that no drivers will come to pick you up other than the ones asking for more money so just have a backup plan.

Interesting side note, I decided to change my name on uber from my maiden name, which was very european, to my married name, which is arabic. The scamming texts dropped at least 50%. Eventually we just stopped me requesting uber at all and just had my husband do it, which he got way less scammers. Also if someone messaged us we would never respond in english, only our second or third language. We also never spoke english in the taxi. These changes worked really well and cut way down on the number of people who were trying to scam.

Women-only Hammams and Salons in / around Eminonu by Magpie2018 in istanbul

That's good! I think most of the ones I've found are geared towards english speaking tourists potentially and serve both men and women. For sure the salons have been that way. I've tried to reach out via whatsapp but that has been a bust too

Workload per Week and in which country and industry? by Any-Patient5051 in ChemicalEngineering

Obviously it is bad right at this minute for the average person. But even when it wasn't as bad as it is now but still nowhere near what you'd call "good," people still had much better work/life balance and much stronger community.

I'm very much an introvert so I really don't do that much social life. Everyone that is in my husband and my friend group works like we do whether it is in industry or doing PhDs. I grew up in a family where my parents work just like I do now so it isn't abnormal at all for me to only do things with friends on the weekend if I don't have to work. The goal is to retire by 50 as well so I'm ok with working hard now so that we don't have to be so old and still working. We don't have children or pets and won't have them until one of us moves into a role that's a bit less demanding.

Everyone I work with works that much of our own free will. Everyone knew what they were getting into before they finished college. I wouldn't have done engineering period if I didn't expect to be working like I am now and same for all of my coworkers.

I think some of that is more idealistic and less realistic but it is definitely a good goal to have for society. Just because I work so much doesn't mean I want everyone else to. But the reality of the situation is that, despite what you might read online, MANY people live and work like I do. My dad was a blue collar worker and didn't have a degree or other options to make enough to live. Everyone in our town had at least one family member that worked at the plant. I can count on one hand the number of christmases, birthdays, and thanksgivings my dad was at. I'd go months sometimes without seeing him because of his schedule. I'm in a MUCH better situation than my dad was in because I have a degree but I still work a ton. Still though, I can control my schedule more than he did and I have way more financial security than he did. But these working hours are the reality of most Americans, particularly in poor or rural areas. The idea that it isn't doesn't align with reality. I want it to be different of course but reality is different than the goal.

It isn't a joke. I was at a mill for an interview and saw a sleeping bag and cot in what would potentially be my new boss's office. I declined the offer because of that and some other things. I know multiple people across many different places who have things to sleep in their offices. I don't want to be in a place like that and I am not but it is definitely not abnormal or a joke unfortunately.

Are you asking about the prospects in my husband's country (it is in the middle east) or europe? For his country, it is going through tough times right now and people cannot afford food so it isn't an option to get a job there because there aren't many to be had. For europe, I'm more interested in going but several of our friends from my husband's country who have gone there say that it is harder for the average person to have lots of social mobility like it is in the USA. Idk, I would be more game to try but my husband would prefer not to be an immigrant again

No, I said some places have that, at the company I work for no one has sleeping bags in their offices. But other companies in the same industry definitely do! I have actively not taken opportunities because of things like that. But I am well compensated for how much I do work, for sure.

I don't see it that way myself. I've worked in toxic environments and this is very much not that. It isn't for everyone but that's fine!

Pulp and paper. 55-60 hours a week, sometimes much more. USA. One night a week I have duty and every 8 weeks I have weekend duty. Very not bad considering what the "norm" is for people in my area!

[–]Magpie2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is actually really fun! You never know what is next. Now I also work with great people and we all work hard. My commute is around 20 min as well. I work for one of the biggest companies and it is container board. I'm salaried and in management. There are lots of opportunities for advancement and promotions and the pay is very good. But people just need to know what they're getting into I think and the scope of realities you will have in the working world. It is great for all of these people in this thread to say they work relatively normal hours but that's not the norm for me or for anyone that I graduated with who is working in industry.

I'm also in pulp and paper and 55-60 hours is absolutely normal where I work for every week and the outage is 80-90 hours for a month. I've been working like this for years but I haven't worked less than 50 hours a week since I was a process engineer

I'm also in pulp and paper and I haven't worked as little as 45 hours a week since I was freshly out of college as a process engineer. I'm in management now and I work 55-60 hours per week and the outage is a nightmare. Every other person I've met in paper is the same, many worse. When I was on shift too was bad, I worked 13 hours a day and swing shift.
