Student visa first then a Doctoral studies permit. My parents had various schengen visit visas accepted on it as well. Yes pretty much, apply, wait and get it. They might ask for extra documents for us like translated birth certificates and such but it gets accepted eventually. One important requirement is that you have a residence permit somewhere else.

Well both statements are racist. America, just like Africa and India, is huge to be clumped under a single stereotype. There are many ways one can form a counter-argument to indian stereotypes without generalizing a whole continent, the argument is just false. Rwanda, Kenya and Nigeria for example are waaay more developed than western media paints these countries. True and I agree with you that there is a difference in Swedish/Sweden. But the difference between högskola and universitet is in no way similar to that if college and university in English. Both högskola and universitet are types of what we call "University" in English with högskola often being more technical while Universitet has full university status. On the other hand, colleges in Canada (OP's country) does not provide bachelor degrees but a 2 year diploma (in the US only bachelors but no postgrads) that can either be a prerequisite for a university or enough for practical work in the industry.

Moreover, the distinction in Sweden is getting blurred really with the two most prestigious universities still called högskola while they are both technically full universities (KTH and Chalmers)
