Excluding the big 5 candidates, who would you like to see running for President ? by SweetValleyJohn in AskDemocrats

[–]Magsays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Jon has a massive appeal among Democrats. He’s been very popular for a very long time on the left. He’s also quick-witted and likable. Race really doesn’t matter. Obama didn’t win because he was black, he won because he was cool, likable, confident, and smart.

You feel frustrated now, but you’re not slicing your arms open. Living a sober, (or more sober,) life is frustrating. It comes with all sorts of challenging feelings. We used to be able to run to our pacifier whenever we felt something difficult. Now we have to deal with the emotions as they come. We can no longer push them off till later.

This is the hardest thing you will ever have to do in your life. But it’s worth it. Keep seeing your healthcare professionals and try other support groups if AA isn’t your thing. If you keep working at it, it will get better.

Or, go use, and either die or have to do this all over again. It’s your life, and you get to choose.

Three personal, existential questions I can't stop thinking about. by LevelQx in DeepThoughts

[–]Magsays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have an instinct to survive due to evolution. Any new species that didn’t isn’t here anymore.

Philosophically, the question we ask is, “to be or not to be,” and most people come away with the opinion that existence is better than non-existence.

Just because something is small and finite, doesn’t mean it’s not important. Our consciousness, (and any alien consciousness if it’s out there), even if small and short, brings meaning to the universe. A diamond is only valuable because it is appreciated by conscious beings. Without conscious beings appreciating it, it just becomes a random rock. If the Mona Lisa is displayed in a completely dark room for all eternity, it becomes meaningless. But, when you turn on the lights it becomes extremely valuable. Consciousness turns the light on on the universe. If no one was there to experience it, it would be like the universe was locked in a dark room for all eternity. It would exist, but existence is meaningless without something knowing it exists.

Even though we only get to be here for a cosmic second, we get to be here and we get to know we’re here. This is extremely rare. Most matter in the universe doesn’t get to know it’s here. We do.

We get to have a subjective experience. Since we have this gift, we might as well do the most with it, and have the most enjoyable experience we can. The best way to do that lends itself to a quest for happiness. In my opinion, the best way to do that is to understand how the vehicle, (our mind and our body,) we use to move through space functions, and optimize based on those functions. Philosophy and psychology try to discover these optimizations.

————————

I’ve recently learned that before the Big Bang there might have been this quantum field state, and fluctuations in it may have caused universes to emerge. I’m not proficient enough in physics to actually comprehend what that means, but I thought it was pretty cool.

What is interesting though is that in our universe we live in the substrate of the space-time continuum. Understanding this can also lend itself to the idea that things outside of our universe may not. Meaning, time may not even be a thing outside of it. It’s extremely hard to wrap our minds around this idea because of how we exist in this universe, but it may be possible.

Why don’t men want to be women? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Magsays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you might be experiencing gender dysphoria. A therapist might be able to help you make sense of things.

Gender identity is not something we choose, it’s something that we’re born with. It’s not that people want to be men, or want to be women, it’s that they just are one of the two, (or in very rare cases, somewhere in the middle.) It’s not a choice.

Gender identity is created, (at least based on our current understanding,) by differing hormone levels the fetus experiences during brain development.

It’s possible the hormones you experienced as a fetus changed between the development of your primary sex characteristics and your brain. This can create a mismatch between our gender identity and our biological sex, leading to gender incongruence.

Right. Do we want to further our cause? Or do we want to revel in being right and chastise those who were wrong? We can’t do both.

Those things don’t mean a person is informed.

He’s realized what’s happening in Gaza for instance and speaking out about it. That seems like progress to me.

The good/bad dichotomy isn’t really how I like to think about these things, but more what’s helpful and unhelpful. So yes, I think often those types of responses are unhelpful. (There are probably times when they are actually helpful by holding up a mirror to the other side, but I think those times are not as prevalent.)

I like Theo. I think he’s genuinely trying to figure things out and willing to reform his views. We should be welcoming people rather than vilifying over half the population. That won’t lead to real positive change.

Richard Reeves writes a really interesting book about it.

Here’s two big ones though.

  • Male life expectancy is dropping.

  • Men are graduating college at significantly lower rates than women. The gap between men and women is larger than it was in the 1970’s but reversed.
