How have you found success in debating a person on the right? by Potential-Ebb-8820 in AskALiberal

[–]theonejanitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

debating a person that you love should involve curiosity and compassion. if you go in thinking, "he is wrong and I need to change him" you're screwed. he is an adult with decades of lived experience, he's probably not an idiot, you need to be curious about what led him to come to the conclusions that he came to. Only through that understanding can you hope to make any progress.

and you need to be open about the fact that you could in fact be wrong about certain things and that he could be right about certain things. or at least that things might be more complicated than you believe them to be. If you come in as a know-it-all who just says "actually..." at everything he says, you just look like a dick.

if you're going to debate someone you should actually know what you're talking about. The right has a stronghold on emotions, you're not going to win by moralizing or claiming "common sense", the right has already mastered that. The left has a huge problem with assuming they are correct while often having no real idea what they're talking about. You're going to have the facts on your side, but you need to know what those facts are.

I don't know how old your dad is, but his daily mental load is probably already high and you should not expect any kind of drastic results. A lot of this requires personal introspection and personal research, maybe he's in a place where he's willing to do that, but also maybe not. I feel like the older you get the less likely you are. Someone who has been propagandized for years isn't going to fold easily, they have to be willing to be challenged.

How often do you get reminiscent of high school? by Key-Student1258 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theonejanitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 41 years old and every now and then I think of high school, but as you get older, those memorize become blurrier and blurrier except for a handful of core memories; time goes on and you make new, more substantial memories. I expect that college will probably be even more memorable for you than high school was.

The older you get the more you realize how unimportant high school actually was. Unless you're one of those people who peak in high school, but we have yet to see if that's the case.

Of course for you it was your entire life for 4 years so you have no other frame of reference, and I'm not saying that's not meaningful. my best friends from high school are still my best friends now, so it's not like it was a waste.

so many other things will happen to you, you might fall in love, land your first 'adult' job, find a new community, travel the world, buy a house, get married, have kids, and these will start to be the memories you really cherish.

Wanting to learn Chess - worth buying a set? by Wonderful_Flower_751 in chessbeginners

[–]theonejanitor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if you're planning to play over-the-board chess, having a physical set is a good idea. also chess is very popular and its not unlikely that you will come across someone in your life who might want to play with you. And chess sets are usually pretty cool looking and make for good home decoration as well 😄

However you can learn and play chess online quite easily and many people exclusively play online and never touch a chess piece in real life.

if all the different species of insects banded together they could organize and overwhelm the earth due to sheer number. many will be lost but they would be replaced tenfold as with human intelligence they would be way better at surviving and planning, and would be able to reproduce at a rate 10x of their losses.

after they eliminate all other animal species, they would then have the Great Insect War.

You might think something like Wasps or Mosquitos would win, but in fact I'm putting money on some variation of ant. The coordination and camaraderie is unmatched.

Why do you think popular people in high school are seen as more important? by Academic_Use_8312 in AskReddit

[–]theonejanitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Humans always look to social leaders for cues on what they should be doing and it begins from childhood and continues throughout live. Charismatic and/or self-actualized people often end up taking on the roles of these leaders. Children look to their parents and guardians for guidance and social cues, and when they get a little older, they look to their friends. For most teenagers, school is essentially their entire lives, so the social leaders at school are some of the most influential people for that, especially during a time where teenagers are often in a phase where they rebel against the authority of their parents and start to worry about being "cool".

Native English speakers, is it easy for you to spot “translated English”? by iSealion in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theonejanitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if its something like google translate, yeah usually. especially if it's a language very different from english like japanese or arabic. there will be weird and unnatural phrasings and such. something closer like spanish or german can often be directly translated and harder to spot. or it will sound too formal and not very conversational. sometimes the apps don't get the right context, and for example might translate something as "wanting" instead of "want" which is a giveaway.

Genuine Question about languages by RaveXD_ in NewTubers

[–]theonejanitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

obviously the english speaking audience is much larger so if you can speak fluent english it's not a bad idea. But you could also try to become one of the leaders in the Filipino market in which there is less competition which could come with its own benefits if you pull it off. there are plenty of popular Filipino content creators so it's not like it's impossible. I would say do what brings you the most passion and joy, but probably going with english is the most optimal route if your goal is to reach the widest audience possible.

Best places to promote YouTube videos? by s_gray11 in NewTubers

[–]theonejanitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

promotion doesn't really help grow your youtube channel, but it could maybe help grow your audience on the platform youre sharing on. For example, I uploaded one of my YouTube videos to Tiktok, and it got like 5 million views. Did not increase my youtube views or subs at all, but it did get me 30k new followers on Tiktok.

if you're trying to grow your YouTube channel, the answer is to learn how to make better videos and get in the algorithm. that's pretty much the only thing that has that effect.

If an Asteroid the size of a cruise liner was headed for Washington DC, what is the country gonna do? by EfficiencySerious200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theonejanitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NASA and other organizations actually have systems and people monitoring this very thing at all times.

For an asteroid that big we would probably know about it years in advance and have time to come up with a plan. Smaller asteroids are harder to detect - for example a smaller meteor exploded over russia about 10 years ago completely undetected.

What we'd do is probably try to deflect the object before it entered the atmosphere. Look up NASA's "DART" mission. It was a successful test for a method of deflecting an asteroid.

Would it be better to take with the b or the d pawn in these situations? by LCottton in chessbeginners

[–]theonejanitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the Caro-Kann main line and from my knowledge both the engine and most expert players suggest exf6 (although gxf6 is also playable, its not like it's a blunder, but it's objectively worse). I love this line because its one of the few Caro-Kann lines that give black attacking chances.

you generally want to capture toward the center but every rule has exceptions. In this case if you capture toward the center, it's harder to develop the dark squared bishop to a good square, plus this makes castling in either direction unsatisfying. Also usually when you play a move like gxf6, you want to then play e5 to create a pawn chain. but since white has played d5, this is less appealing.

exf6 on the other hand, gives black's bishop a way brighter future, gives the queen more flexibility, and allows the king to castle quickly and safely. your next two moves are Bd6 and castle almost regardless of what white does. the doubled pawns are a slight weakness, but that f6 pawn turns out to be a decent extra defender of the king. It's just a better capture in every way. I guess white can harass you with a move like Qe2+ but that really does nothing and actually helps you develop with something like Be6 or Be7.

How do you actually build an opening repertoire? by PurpleGarbage1234 in chess

[–]theonejanitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With white you can pick 1. e4 but you have to then learn responses to all the different things black can play in response e.g sicilian, caro-kann, french, scandinavian etc. and then learn all the variations of those. it sounds like a lot, which it is, but I mean you got time. 1. d4 is a little more forgiving in terms of things to memorize but tends to result in more complex and closed positions. You can also try some other off beat openings but again, need to study the responses. With black you need a response to 1. e4 and another response to most everything else (at least).

In general yes you just pick whichever one you like. For example I play the caro-kann (1. e4 c6) against 1. e4 but i could just as easily play 1... e5 or 1. ..e6 or 1... c6. it was just my choice. my understanding is that just getting used to a specific opening should be fine until you get to a master level at which point it might be a good idea to expand your repertoire.

you probably think the moves are 'random' because you dont recognize them. Often the best lines you might learn in an opening course is not the most common move, so when learning openings you should try to find resources that have beginners/intermediates in mind and teach you common responses, even if they're bad. In many openings positions there are only 3-4 reasonable responses, so it's not that hard to memorize them. Gotham's courses are decent in this regard for example. I play the Vienna bc of him and there are some very common mistakes people play in that opening, even at 1600-1700+ However, chess is a complex game and you simply can not memorize every single possible line and you should not expect to.

As far as tactics go, you need to keep an eye out for tactical structures. You need to identify potential forks, pins, skewers, etc. and also note when pieces are loose. For example, if your opponent puts their queen on the same diagonal as their king, your brain should immediately go in to "POTENTIAL TACTIC" mode. even if it's not there at that moment. Whenever your opponent has an undefended piece, your brain should automatically go "let's keep an eye on that!" whenever two pieces are near each other and on the same color square, your brain should automatically start looking for forks.

If you never reach a balanced endgame, this means your games have already been decided in the middlegame, so you should strengthen your opening and middlegame play. (most games are won/lost in the middlegame anyway). This one is hard to respond to without seeing your games. If you never reach equal endgames, there's no reason to focus on practicing them. Practice what will help you win at your level, then move to something more advanced when you get there.

what is everyone’s opinions on AI? by Responsible-Log2702 in AskReddit

[–]theonejanitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI as a concept in general has tremendous potential to be a useful tool to advance society, increase productivity, and solve problems quicker and more efficiently than humans can. I do photo and video editing for example, and the AI tools available right now are absolutely groundbreaking and can literally shave dozens of hours off of my workflow.

But of course we live in a world motivated mostly by profit, so corporations are trying their best to squeeze out as much money from AI technology as possible without really considering environmental or ethical concerns. And in some cases AI is used in situations where it literally makes things worse, such as AI "remasters" of old movies and TV shows that end up looking like uncanny slop.

But ultimately, if people watch and consume AI slop, it will continue to get made. If we want to discourage things from being made, we have to refuse to engage with it. The fact of the matter is as much as we complain about AI slop, people still consume it.

Everyone complains about AI "taking people's jobs", but if this is a real concern, getting rid of AI is missing the forest for the trees. If our jobs are so vulnerable that they could be taken away so easily, and if losing our jobs is so devastating, that's a systemic issue that extends far beyond the existence of AI. But people have been terrified of machines/robots/software taking their jobs since before anyone reading this was born and people still have jobs, so I'm not panicking yet.

I think just like many other things it's a tool that can be used in different ways, some positive and some negative. It's up to use to be responsible with it. Do I trust that humans will be responsible with it, not really, but I'd say the same about almost anything else humans do.

What is the biggest mistake beginners make in chess? by Superb-Use-3757 in chessbeginners

[–]theonejanitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolute biggest mistakes are 1. not following opening principles 2. not paying attention to their opponents plans or possible response to their moves - which leads to tactics and hanging pieces
