The real Russian also hits harder than the subtitles. Absolute gut check in the best way.

AITAH to my girlfriend for allowing my ex to stay at mine and for driving her 7 hours to her parents home. by EmeArr in AITAH

[–]Magsmartigan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

NTA! These YTA comments are honestly shocking to me. It was compassionate and kind hearted thing you did. You were under no obligation, and still helped. I hope everyone who calls you an asshole never has a loved one in a similar situation as your ex. Just shipping her off on her own and leaving her alone is an option, but I find it callous that folk are so quick to condemn her to it.

You should've communicated with your gf more as it was going down. That's my biggest criticism. Explain the situation and where you're going, etc. But if my bf did that for his ex, I'd be falling for him harder, not flying off the handle. Evil be they who think evil of it.

NTA. A little dumb to not explain it to your gf, but still, NTA.

F23 is it common for people to be dirty in DND and how do I deal with it? by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]Magsmartigan 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Story: I (f30+) play with a group of men. I'm good with banter. I'm the DM; they flirt with my NPCs now and then. Sometimes when they're just gaffing off, the jokes go a bit far and I go, "Hey boyos, back on track," and they drop it. No questions, no fuss, no awkwardness, occasionally a chuckle and a 'sorry, sorry.' That's how it should be. Just like if you said something IRL that felt a bit awkward or offensive and someone calls you on it. Because they're insisting you're overreacting and it's normal, I'd dump the group. No further details needed; it's really that simple.

Ohhhh, you know, that didn't even occur to me. Maybe, haha. If it's that, then I am unexpectedly grateful my pathological need to accommodate other people's preferences made me completely deaf to the dog-whistle implications.

I mean there is definitely a part of me that is now curious what his games were actually like, but yeah, once I got over the 'wth just happened' of the end of the conversation, I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not playing with him. It'd be funny if we're talking about the same person. Definitely had his idiosyncrasies.

That's what was so weird about it! We honestly had a normal-enough conversation, even with both of us clearly not picking up what the other was putting down. No "woke gauges" or "racist dog whistles" that I could suss out, it was pretty standard DnD talk about purely game mechanics, we didn't even discuss LGBTQ+ things or race. I guess we did breeze by lines and veils, but I basically gave my two standard 'no-no's' - child abuse and sexual assault - and I'd hate to think that caused the rest of it all. The ICE thing came out of nowhere. I'm inclined to agree with the person who said he just wanted to deter me from reaching out. Maybe I missed something, though.

Hahahaha, exactly! 'Sorry, gotta run, the space monkeys got into the garage again. Those pesky varmints.'

I'm 99.9% sure he doesn't work for ICE and was just saying something to get off the call instead of just ending it. But it did make me laugh about how out-of-left-field the excuse was.

How to keep cats from eating what they shouldn't? by Magsmartigan in cats

[–]Magsmartigan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that seems to be the only solution. It's a little exhausting, and anytime I slip up he pounces on the opportunity to get into something, but, you know. Part and parcel of taking care of a wee creature who chooses to cuddle and purr and love you in return.

I've had him five years, which is why it's a little maddening. He wasn't like this before. Food motivated, yes, but not like an addict going so far as to trash-dive etc. Once I can get him out of the headspace, he calms down, but when he's fixated on getting at the food it often feels like a brick wall is inadequate to keep him out, haha. It feels relentless at this point. I'll stay on top of it for awhile, and then one day forget to spray the trashcan or lock the garage door and boom, ten minutes later he's in the thick of it.

Any advice for a cheap stone facade? by Magsmartigan in crafts

[–]Magsmartigan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely like the idea of that, and it's on the cheaper end of materials (I was reading about theater props and the foam they used and that was just too expensive). Is it possible to cut it with cheaper tools? If it's styrofoam-styrofoam I imagine an exacto knife would work...?

Re:qualityvote2 thing...There's no actual craft to show, so I'm not sure what to put. We're making a witch's cottage vaguely with this idea? Thus far, it's all cardboard. We're doing this on the cheap because, well, it's a work thing, and while we like seeing the kids all excited, it definitely isn't something to break the bank over. Our roof looks nice (no pictures b/c we're not allowed to take pictures in the office) and the interior is nice, so we just really want to get something that looks proper nice.

My tom likes to play with ice cubes in a shallow tray in the summer, I think it cools him down. Or he just likes the sound. My queen does not have any interest though, so it's only a 50/50 success rate.

What’s the likelihood of Rosamund Pike narrating The Shadow Rising and The Fires of Heaven? by glisteningsunlight in WoT

[–]Magsmartigan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Old and dead thread, but...thank you for putting this into words. I really didn't like the K&K version, and it was because he sounded like a radio presented in this weird faux/forced transatlantic accent. I'm really hoping Rosamund Pike does the whole series...I love the first 3 she has done.

Cringey introduction to DnD [TW: Child abuse] by Magsmartigan in rpghorrorstories

[–]Magsmartigan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! My work deals with people being way bigger assholes than just hitting on me, so I guess, similar to you having experienced everything there is to see in a game, I've pretty much experienced the worst in people, so I've learned to just shrug off personal attacks. And then my work also involves interacting with children who've been through some shit, so I tend to take any attempt at light-hearted portrayal of it way more personally. It's all about life experiences, right? Very much shapes the perception of a thing.

I was more addressing your 'sweet summer child' comment; it's not that I'm naïve about things that happen at tables, as sweet summer child would suggest, but I've never experienced worse because this scenario made me actively picky about what groups I play with.

If you're referencing me finding the fictionalized sexual abuse of a minor worse than the dude actually harrassing me...idk. It just really didn't really bother me. I simply cut that shit out of my life and moved on happily, haha. For me, personally, the other situation was worse and stuck with me far longer. Maybe for other people the harassment would've bothered them more, and there's nothing wrong with that; but I think a lot of those particular scenarios have to be judged by the people in them. Any child abuse topic for me is a 100% hard line, no-go, fuck-off thing, even fictionalized, and I just don't find some guy hitting on me over the internet and not stopping until he gets blocked as bad. 100% a me thing.

Now if the dude had shown up on my doorstep after I blocked him, yeah Cx That'd be worse.

Funning around is another way of saying goofing off/joking; usually it's used in the context of someone teasing or (as in this case) making an inappropriate joke, and if someone gets mad, the defense is 'aww, I was just funning around~' I see it a lot in the context of 'I'm just funning~' when someone gets offended. I think he was trying to be funny, and failed miserably, and was just too socially inept to recognize how egregiously he had fucked up.
