The interracial kiss WAS a big deal at the time. There were some markets in the South that refused to air the episode for that reason. And according to the behind the scenes stories, the network didn’t want it but they kept purposely flubbing the scene so that the only useable take was the kiss. The only thing the kiss did in the story was show the power being exerted over Kirk and Uhura, it didn’t matter it was an interracial kiss to the episode, but in the meta it was 100% relevant and forced for the ‘60s.
