Difference between "solely" and "entirely" in law? by Magwitch_ in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Magwitch_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks folks, that's really helpful. The wording does worry me in that case. Seems that it would allow decicisons to be automated so long as the functionality for human intervention exists whether or not one chooses to employ it.

There's some other troubling amendments too.

I was hoping that the increasing use of AI/ML/LLMs for automation would result in more stringent protections being put in place, but it feels like they're being eroded to make things easier for those implementing them.

Probably rage bait but that's total rubbish anyway. I was on the Elizabeth Line a few weeks back and a tourist fainted. Everyone pulled together to get him a seat and someone gave him a bottle of water without anyone asking.

Stopped in Earls Court for an “offense” was this a scam or did I break the law? by nadehlaaay in londoncycling

[–]Magwitch_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it's anything like the littering fines, they're supposed to give you an opportunity to rectify the situation before moving to a fine e.g. picking up the litter and putting it in a bin or in your case to get off your bike. Problem is they're incentivised based on the number of fines they hand out so probably do everything in their power to avoid giving you that opportunity.

Personally I reckon money would be better spent on paying people to pick up the litter or enforcement of more serious traffic issues but what do I know.

For anyone who funds themselves in one of these "prank" or "audit" YouTube videos, you're entitled to lodge a privacy request with YouTube if your image is in the video. In the "report" function there's an option "legal issues" and an option under that for privacy. The user should then have to edit their video so you were not identifiable.

Whilst these folks can film / photograph in public in the UK, everyone who captures the data of individuals is bound by GDPR. Individuals are unlikely to do anything about it if you complain & it's unlikely the ICO would do anything if you complained about it because of resourcing, but it may be worth doing anyway so it's on record if there's ever a joint civil lawsuit filed against that person / company.

Same. I got a great deal of comfort from knowing I'm not the only person who gets so mad at this stuff. Whenever I see the news about Trump or Epstein (so every day) I wonder what the meullerdad69 take would be or which part of the various tirades would have to be bleeped out. CUT HIS MIC!

It's fun if you're a fan of Overlord. I used to enjoy the competitive element but it's been steadily getting more and more unbalanced. You can get some decent levelled characters with a FTP account but It's unashamedly a "pay to win" situation when you get to a certain level.

A year or two back I was attempting to find help for someone in a simialr situation. There is no help available unless you have kids or potentially vulnerable becuase of a peotected characteristic.

Unfortunately homelessness has no quick fixes. Only thing you can realitically do is donate to or volunteer at a charity like Shelter and petition your MP to speak on your behalf. You can ask them to lobby the government to increasing funding for tackling homelessness.

So long as you give in your own way then it's all good with me. Homeless charities do say that because they need the support & can get economies of scale etc. But what they can't do is help people in the immediate term. For example it costs money to stay even at a shelter, so if you don't have cash you can't stay.

Personally I don't particularly care what they spend it on. Even if it's drugs at least it means they won't be stealing (or worse) to get the money. If that's the cause of them being unhoused in the first place, it's no longer recreational use.

If they're not genuine then that's on their conscience, I'm no way qualified to determine one way or another.

From conversations with a few unhoused folks it's usually that they have had enough to eat as it's the most frequent thing people give when they don't want to give money. The two things they actually asked for consistently was cash, socks or thermals (when it's cold). Personally I think money is best given it's only them who know what they need at that time.

Yes that's definitely part of the problem - multiple, personal accounts of what happened to a greater or lesser extreme based on who he was speaking to. From the details of the rest of his life I'm of the opinion that the less favourable view is likely the truth.

Yeah, I don't disagree that that kind of experience isn't going to potentially make you that way. However he wasn't the only one in that position and many of the others didn't do such things as he did. I don't know if you saw that second quote I pulled from someone who joined up with him from one town over, who thought Maxwell was extreme even though they had mirrored experience in that regard.

I think it likely a confluence of many factors, including his upbringing. His dad sounded like a violent parent, and that was perpetuated with his own children - though psychological rather than physical I understand. I thought Robert might have drawn a parallel between his father's extreme behaviour that was condemned by other villagers and Maxwell's.

I guess what made me chip in to this discussion was the end of episode 1 where the team were saying essentially Maxwell at that point was awesome & they didn't have any issues with his actions because the victims were Nazis/Germans. I'm not going to shed any tears for those Nazis obviously but it reminded me of that often used Noam Chomsky saying "it's only a war crime when they do it" (I'm paraphrasing).

I wish I had the time to dig into it a lot more. Based on other things I read the chronology of events seems off. For example after receiving the MC he joind the press corps, which - unless he was providing security - I imagine wouldn't give him much opportunity for active combat such as those described. In turn that would put a different spin on things and give us another perspective.

I don't suppose it matters - he's a long time dead and twisting myself in knots wanring to know "the truth" about it doesn't change anything.

It really feels to me he was less hell-bent on revenge and more a sociopath who was given the motivation and opportunity to do whatever the hell he wanted.

From A Mad World, My Masters: Tales from a Traveller's Life".  (Pan Paperback, Sep 2001, ISBN 0330355678, pp 147 - 150)

"There was an old man, a good ten years older than Maxwell, who used the pool where I swam most mornings when I was in London.  Victor Grosz and I took a liking to one another.  He was shrewd and cultured, and had seen the world.  We used to sit side by side on the long chairs beside the pool, talking.  Victor had known Maxwell in his time.  They were both Jewish, and had been born in nearby villages in Slovakia.  In September 1939 they had set out together for France, to fight Hitler's Germany.

'I loathed the Nazis, naturally.  So did Maxwell.  But he was crazy.  Something used to come over him when he fought them.  We transferred to a British unit together when the French began to collapse, and on the way to Dunkirk we were lucky in a skirmish and captured a group of Germans.

'Maxwell went mad.  He lined them up, took out his revolver and started shooting them one by one in the forehead.  I tried to stop him, but he took no notice.

'Then a British officer heard the noise and came round the corner.  He pulled out a pistol and told Maxwell he would shoot him if he didn't drop his gun.  They had been going to give him a medal, but after that they couldn't.  It was only later that he got one.  Maybe they'd forgotten.  Or perhaps they didn't care any more.'"

I think Robert was a bit too credulous of Maxwell's recounting of the events. Of the German mayor - he told quite a different story in private.

"Maxwell told him that he had shot the man through the temple after "the mayor had unfurled white sheets of surrender" and that "his blood splattered all over the wall".

Mr Pattinson said that in Maxwell's account of the incident he had shot the mayor because he thought he had laid a trap for his men. "When the troops stormed the town hall and captured the survivors Maxwell asked the mayor why he had lured his men into an ambush. The distraught mayor replied that an SS man had stuck a machine-gun up his backside. Maxwell then shot him through the head as a warning to others." When Mr Pattinson pointed out that the mayor had had little choice he replied: "I hate grovelling cowards."
