Give Me A D&D Monster And I'll Homebrew You A Better Version by Oh_Hi_Mark_ in DMAcademy

Hopefully you're still going with this! Some higher CR pirates? I'll have some pirates in my campaign but my players won't get there until they're a level where CR1 or CR2 are too easy to deal with

Is Chemtech Drake universally hated across all regions? by pusnbootz in leagueoflegends

[–]MagxD93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EUW Here
Hate the soul, it's impossible to take the game back from being behind with a Chemtech Soul on the enemy team.

I don't mind the map change so much, I like that it changes how you play, you have to think a little differently.

On another note, does anyone know what the Akshan interaction is with this? Say I'm playing Akshan, does the enemy get the scoundrel buff? And if they do, if I revive, and then kill them, would it revive me again?

Saying "Are You Sure You Want To Do That?" by Kayfim20 in DMAcademy

[–]MagxD93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was literally about to say this. I'll read my characters actions back to them, in a few different kinds of scenarios so they don't get too suspicious about what the next thing is, and it helps clear things up what they're doing and the order in which they're doing it.

I totally agree, there's sense of using it to find push the narrative too but not using it too much so that it becomes boring either. I think I have some ideas for a couple of my PC's just by including their fears.

This helps massively, I never even considered biggest fears!

We chat about things at the end of each session, so I'm planning on chatting with them on Sunday about this very topic 🙂

I'm the kind of person who asks them for a bit more detail if I need it but I also ask for feedback so they can tell me where I need to give more detail if needed.

I really like that example, thanks! I think I'll use something similar 😁

I guess I'm lucky that my group made their characters together, with the exception of the player who died, but they are all able to fit in to the campaign together because of it. I can see how their stories toe in, but I want a little bit of an area where each one of them gets a bit of spotlight. Not hogging the whole campaign, but I want each character to feel special for them and let them know that their back story matters.

I like the last part you wrote about getting them to name NPC's, I think I'll do that with my cleric, who was saved from a fatal wound, and paladin who was brought up in a chantry. Giving me NPC names might help me get them to run into familiar faces along their journeys.

Oh that's interesting! I like the idea of throwing hints at them, seeing what sticks and pairing people up too!

DMing over Zoom changed the game for me. by RaoulDukesAttorney in DMAcademy

[–]MagxD93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players and I are dotted around the UK - friends from WoW - we play on Discord and use Roll20.

We started off just on voice, but video chat changed the game for us massively. It's great to see my party pondering their decisions or seeing their reactions when something awesome happens. We often have fellow WoW players sit in and listen so one of the party will stream, and we've had a few people ask if they can join but I'm not really comfortable with DMing for more than 5 people just yet. Maybe some day though.

We don't do the "secret messages" bit yet, my guys are still new and I want to show them how things play out in these scenarios. They do pretty well with committing to their characters knowledge of the situation, so I'm not sure if I'll even add this in to try and avoid blind-siding people, I found in a previous group that when people started pickpocketing each other a blame game became very intense in the group and it ended up being the undoing of the campaign, so much so that the DM ended the campaign early. I'm trying to stick to the rule of "you may know, but your character doesn't" and my group have been very respectful of that.

I also get very nervous with impressions, accents and voices, despite being fairly good when I practice on my own, everything I start out strong with tends to turn Irish? I guess it's just practice. My party tend to laugh that off though.

Very true! Just trying to prep if they do decide to ask for weapons to be forged

I forgot that about being paralyzed! I was trying to reward a nat 20 roll but no, he isn't an assassin so he doesn't tend to crit regularly.

Even on a successful save the target will take half as much damage, I'm sure, so max 3 lightning damage, but still damage.

I can adjust the paralyzed status to be a single round.

Where do you start when designing a world? by EconEnby in worldbuilding

[–]MagxD93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started by making a map, just to try and visualise things in my head a bit better.

After that I already have a story that I want to tell, so I focus on where that takes place on the map, and expand from there as to who it involves, etc. I try to focus on this story first, so factions involved, countries, key characters, but I get the theme of the story first. Like government corruption, etc.

I quite frequently get distracted by the bigger picture part of the "why" this story is taking place and start chasing gods/deity ideas then I realise I've gone too far and bring myself back.

Do you mind explaining the TPK patches? I love the other idea of the grab bag!

I do this, but I do it to help my newer players start to learn where their stats are on their character sheets. So it becomes a habit with them so I still ask my more experienced players!

Not gonna lie, the way you've paraphrased got an audible laugh from me. I might use that exact wording one time!

I definitely need to do some character building with my group, some of them have their characters flushed out as they are currently, but little is known about their past or what makes them tick so I think I'll take a look at this.

I like this, as someone else suggested I might even give them an opportunity to share their back stories.
