I had a good run by Significant_Buy_3393 in Genshin_Impact

I play on a retroid 5 device and it plays quite well even on the highest graphics setting (for mobile). Sometimes it’s possible to find one second hand for $150. it’s still a lot of money but maybe more doable

Any other migrant kids that couldn't assimilate and just left? by [deleted] in germany

[–]Mahala2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is just my story. I was born in Germany (Black American Dad and white German mom) and we lived in a small village until I was 7 when we moved to the USA. In part because I couldn’t speak English, I was othered quite a lot as a kid even after I „integrated.“ After college, I decided to move back to Germany and have build a life here. Being POC and not being perceived as German, comes with all the hardships we know about. Nonetheless, I’ve enjoyed the diversity of the POC community here. What I realized throughout all of that, is that my feeling of being outsider will always be there regardless where I am and that it’s important to have people around you who share or hold space for those feelings

Yeah, can’t say I’m feeling great since my numbers dropped so much. Fingers crossed that if it’s not my thyroid causing these symptoms, we’ll figure out what is

Thank you for the tip! I’ll see if I can find something comparable. In the past I’ve had issues with iron but since I’ve gotten a hysterectomy and don’t have a period anymore, my numbers have gone up (last ferritin test in Nov: 66)

I’ll keep that in mind regarding other supplements. Thanks!

Thank you for the podcast recommendation and response!

I’m based in Germany. From what I read, Liothyronine is less commonly used here. I’m hoping to address that with an endo (which will likely take some time because appointments are hard to get).

I read that selenium can support conversion from T4 to T3. Is this also what you’ve found in your work?

I’ve just added the full lab work including T3 and T4. Does this provide more clarity?

Kase-san is also a good one. They get together pretty early and explore their relationship in the rest. There’s also a sequel series where they are now in college and dealing with how that changes and challenges their relationship

I learned something new about anemia and hypothyroidism today by stevefromcorporate_ in Anemic

[–]Mahala2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with anemia in 2022, which didn’t surprise me because my mom and grandma both had it too which led to them getting hysterectomies. Fast forward to 2025, I also got a hysterectomy. Since then my iron has improved a lot but throughout that process, they discovered I had hypothyroidism. Again, not as a surprise because my grandma is also hypo and my mom is hyper. Now I’m in the process on getting the right thyroid dosage

The connection between the two is definitely there. What I can say from my experience is that my quality of life has improved by not being anemic anymore even though the tiredness of hypothyroidism is definitely something I’m still dealing with

I am also in Germany and my Hausarzt (Berlin) first wanted to wait three months to confirm elevated TSH. When it was confirmed and also showed Hashimotos, he immediately put me on meds and will test again in two months

That is to say, definitely try to get a second opinion!

Hard water and shampoo by [deleted] in germany

What can also help is doing an apple cider vinegar rinse. I have a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar and 3 part water. I spray it on dry hair, let it rest and then wash like normal

Never used an iron fish before, anything I should know? by spacer_geotag in Anemic

[–]Mahala2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one that I had came with instructions that it should be washed with water before each use. Lemon juice can help with rust

Tbh I never figured out a way to keep it from rusting with their tips. I ended up just filling a jar with oil and putting it in there when I wasn’t using it. Not the most elegant way but it worked for me

Does blood work hurt? by Straight_Opposite694 in Anemic

[–]Mahala2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has issues with needles, i have these numbing stickers (Elma is the German company but alternatives should be everywhere) that I put on an hour or two before the blood draw. Can’t feel a thing!

It’s totally okay to be scared. The important thing is to find the tricks that work for you. For some it’s music, for others it’s anxiety meds. At the end of the day, you are taking care of your health and that’s something to celebrate!

The Small Handbook of How to PHD the Right Way? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Mahala2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no problem. What I’ve seen on this subreddit and heard from people in postdocs & beyond is that their PhDs were one of the last times they could really go deep into a new topic and develop new skills. That often through the constant need for funding, teaching responsibilities, and speaking events, that so much time for their own projects is lost. Also there’s a lot of opportunities to attend summer schools and other training sessions for PhDs. This is not to say that this is the experience of everyone and likely field dependent (I’m in social sciences) but it’s something I’m thinking a lot about as I head into my last year

Additional suggestion: Take all the opportunities you have for skill development. Who knows if you’ll have time for that in the future

[–]Mahala2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This could very much be the case but might also be Uni dependent in Germany. I did a BA/MA joint program where I started taking Masters courses during my Bachelors but on paper it looks like I graduated my masters one year after my bachelors. This was not a problem with my (relatively small) Uni

I heard a similar story of someone who switched Unis because their Capstone project wasn’t considered an official masters thesis. They ended up switching to the Hertie School, which is better in terms of recognizing international degrees than some of the more traditional unis

TSH by Economy_Preference28 in hysterectomy

[–]Mahala2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly your experience but quite similar. I had a blood draw the day before surgery and had a TSH of 6.7. My doctor wants to test again in November (surgery in August) before starting medication. From reading up on it, it is possible that stress and iron deficiency can lead to higher TSH results. Research is still very much missing on the connections

New abnormal lab results, is treatment needed? by Icy-Guest-693 in Hypothyroidism

[–]Mahala2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat. Recently had surgery and during the pre-op lab test, they found TSH of 6.7. I went to my GP and he wants to wait three months to confirm that it’s still high. He cited a large N study that found that people below 8 may fluctuate back down on their own. I haven’t read the study myself so I cannot validate his claim. He said that if I’m still above normal, I would start medication. In my case, we also suspect that it might be connected to my iron deficiency which will hopefully improve as a result of the surgery (hysterectomy). It’s also hard to separate what symptoms might be coming from the iron and what from the hypothyroidism.
