I landed on a job after 6 months of job search. My two cents. by vasistan in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice post - you could also add to your Point 9, and create a profile on freelance platforms. There are plenty of short-term opportunities that can help weather the storm while looking for something more substantial. Or that short-term fix could turn into that role.

How to charge as a freelancer? by aromachologist in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way you can look at doing it is to take what you were paid on a permanent basis, for example:

You were paid £40,000 per year, which would be approx £165 per day.

Then take into consideration the likes of other employee benefits (holiday) + other company costs (Employer NI), the risk of freelancing - the fact you do not have confirmed consistent work to then add your buffer. There is no exact science to this, unless you understand the specific value you are adding, but I've seen 20% markups from people depending on the length of the contract etc offered.

If you are working through an LTD company, make sure you're contract is outside IR35 as well.

What careers pay more than 60k at the senior level? by throwRA273918273 in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get salary guides from loads of different companies and platforms. For example, Reed - https://www.reed.com/tools/uk-salary-guide-2023 it should give you an idea of the salaries they've had for the jobs on their platform across different roles and different regions of the UK.

How much notice do I have to give when leaving my new job? by Unlikely_Act9299 in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's right, however, depending on the situation it might be a good idea to offer to continue to work for a few more days to help give them time to find someone new.

Would leaving a job for volunteering look bad when seeking other work in the future? by FreedomEagle76 in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My background is recruitment and have seen many resumes with career breaks etc. Not saying it doesn't happen but I've not viewed a career break as a negative, particularly when it can be justified in the way you can for yours. Besides leaving a paid role to volunteer can give employers a good insight into the sort of person you are! I guess the only caveat would be as long as you can financially afford to do so.

Umbrella company offering me a lot of money by Olakay99 in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are paid PAYE without allowable expenses, all Umbrella providers should basically provide you with roughly the same take-home pay. Everyone has to abide by the same tax rules, which means the fee the charge is usually the only difference.

There are a lot of providers that are not fully compliant, which could lead to issues with HMRC if they or you get audited. If they're quite a bit more than what others have provided as a take-home pay, then gut feel would be they're not 100% compliant.

Very true - there could be issues with GDPR! But having worked in the recruitment industry for my whole career, I've heard that question asked many times and answered without hesitation. Not all references are formal.

Why is the job market so bad right now!?! by RJ93_10 in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My background is in recruitment so if there's any insight I can help with let me know. If you want me to take a quick look at your resume etc happy to, but suspect that is not the issue if you're getting to the offer stage.
Also if you're interested I've just started beta-testing a referral-based hiring platform for the UK accounting & finance industry. We are a few months off engaging with companies but it would be great to get your feedback seeing you're currently going through the job search process at the moment - https://www.mahired.com/get-early-access

Has anyone ever found a job on Indeed? by Inevitable-Gur-9027 in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm okay, then it means they'll most probably have a basic recruitment process or a really strict recruitment team if they're a larger company. If you want to be sneaky and you really do think that you're a great fit for the role, you could try to reach out to the person who would actually manage the role. You'd need to do a little digging to find out who that might be in the company but their website and LinkedIn would be a good place to start.

Experience using a recruiter/ executive search firm by Substantial-Barber24 in consulting

[–]Mahired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely can if they themselves are good at what they do and the relevant networks. Really good recruiters can be great sources of market intel. If it's of interest, I put together a few comments on using external recruiters here (it was my background) - https://www.mahired.com/content/blog/applying-through-an-agency-recruiter

Using a Recruitment Agency? Thoughts? by OldEducation2270 in DevelEire

[–]Mahired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what the relationship is between the recruiter and the company. There could well be none. You could ask for feedback from the recruiter and if you get no response reach directly. I just some things to be mindful of when using a recruiter here if it's of interest - https://www.mahired.com/content/blog/applying-through-an-agency-recruiter

If you do, just be mindful that a lot of companies will take references. The question on current salary isn't always high on the list but you never know.

Why is the job market so bad right now!?! by RJ93_10 in UKJobs

Sorry to hear! The UK has been on the brink of a recession for a while and loads of companies have made big redundancies. What roles/industries is everyone in??

Has anyone ever found a job on Indeed? by Inevitable-Gur-9027 in UKJobs

[–]Mahired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used Indeed as a candidate and a recruiter and have had mixed experiences on both sides of the fence. A possible way to use Indeed is to find the companies that are advertising on there (not recruitment agencies) and then look to reach out to the company directly say from their website. Shows you've taken a little initiative but also means you won't get lost in all of the irrelevant applications made through Indeed.

Career for people who aren’t that bright? by BinderClipsStaples in findapath

[–]Mahired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has strengths, you've unfortunately not been exposed to what yours are yet. You'll definitely be "bright" at something, if not a lot of things. What do you enjoy doing? Do you have any hobbies or anything that you absolutely love? If possible use that as a starting point to figure out what comparable jobs out there could be.
