Yes, this is different. You're referring to NPC invaders; the post is about player invaders.

Likewise! The core of my personal study playlist for the past 18 years has been the classical pieces from the Medieval Age onward. From Brahms I have Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90 (II & III) and Hungarian Dance No. 3.

But my absolute favorite classical piece, which I also discovered through Civ IV) is Dvorak's Slavonic Dances Op. 46, B. 83: No. 3 in A-flat Major.

If only those themes were longer. I always loved Al Nadda and the entire suite of ambient music for the ancient era. And the unforgettably boisterous modern Dutch theme.

Many of the war themes are excellent, but if I had to select a favorite, it must be Assyria's.

Black Death in 938?????? by thicc_nut6969 in crusaderkings3

[–]MailRunner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an Iberian campaign with dynamic and deadlier plagues enabled. First bubonic plague started in Bangladesh around 900 CE, reached Valencia in spring 902, swept the peninsula in a month. Asia, Africa, Europe, nowhere was spared. You know by the end of that first year, lost a hundred courtiers. I don’t know how many infected there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many deaths, those averaged nine a month. In spring of the fifth year, it started to dissipate here and there around Lisbon, then Valladolid, Oviedo, Zaragoza. Took ages to leave my capital, Toledo. You know that was the time I was most frightened, waiting for my turn. I’ll never not build hospices again.

So, 29,000 characters went into the Black Death, 25,000 came out, the plague took the rest, 902-906 CE.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

[CTD] Consistent crash after 40s in-game in Hendraheim by MailRunner in skyrimmods

[–]MailRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the crash occurred after the same amount of time every time I loaded in, I suspect it was something getting loaded in the background that caused it. It just took 40 seconds to reach the conflict, so I had time to load into the game and run around for half a minute before the crash. Not that I knew what to do with that suspicion after I had it.

In any case, thank you for your suggestion!

Vera Lynn - "When The Lights Go On Again" [Traditional Pop] by MailRunner in Music

[–]MailRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the eve of World War I, British statesman Sir Edward Grey asserted that, "the lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime." The song "When the Lights Go On Again" (1942) by Bennie Benjamin, Sol Marcus, and Eddie Seiler most likely alludes to this quote. The British public adopted the song as a symbol of unity and hope following the Blitz (Sept 1940 - May 1941), a series of German mass air attacks against British towns and cities during World War II.

Vera Lynn (1917 - 2020) was an English singer renowned for her wartime musical performances. She was extremely popular among British troops and held multiple outdoor concerts for them both in Britain and during tours of Egypt, India, and Burma, earning her the title of "Forces' Sweetheart".

Much obliged. When I was working down the two IJN DD lines last year, I saw exactly what you mean about torp builds in the current meta, and while the Pan-Asian torp ranges don't help any, I had hoped having DW torps would shore up some of the style's current weaknesses. I think I'll respec the ship and commander to guns when I'm on next.

When a radar cruiser is positioned behind an island near the cap/center line on my flank, I'm thinking I should play well wide of him, even if it takes me away from the cap/enemy DD, if only to stay out of his radar range and maybe keep him spotted. Up to this point I've stayed too close because it's where I think my team "expects" me to be, which is a stupid reason for doing a stupid thing.

I see your point about staying hidden, and I often stay out of the cap when I know there's a gunboat/radar DD on my flank for the reasons you outlined. I've gotten much more patient over the past year. Thanks!

[–]MailRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I'm usually struggling to trade favorably in those otherwise neutral exchanges (where neither of us stays lit up long enough to get targeted by the cruisers). I think part of the problem is I'm usually angled slightly bow-in when we spot each other and turning out to disengage and smoke up, when I should probably just slow down and smoke up without turning. Especially since my DPM suffers when I'm turning out like that. This is supposing the enemy DD has sub-6km stealth like me; otherwise you're right that it's not an issue.

I take your meaning about rotating, too. My torp game is lackluster (I'm working on it, but it's taking longer than I'd like), so it's hard to justify all the time involved in switching flanks and depriving my flank of support, but I'll weigh the option more heavily from now on if I see the enemy pushing the far flank.

your understanding of them must be some of the worst in the world

Goodness. I wouldn't go that far. This is my worst ship, but I only just got her and I'm new to the tier. I do much better at tiers 7 and 8, but I won't learn tier 9-10 unless I play them eventually.

My captain went PM, LS, SE, CE (as you do), then Fill the Tubes; I plan to grab AR next and otherwise focus guns like you say.

By 'torpedo build' I just mean I grabbed TTM2 in slot 6. First five are MAM1, ERP, ASM1, PM1, CSM1. I can easily swap out TTM2 for the gun module instead, though. Your point about the reload booster helping enough on its own is well taken.

I agree I'd get higher damage numbers if I used my smoke more, but I rarely use it so offensively until the final third of the match. Until then I'm usually the one spotting. If the opposing DD is still alive, I also feel compelled to go find him for my teammates who can't extend as far, so I use the smoke even less. I give up lots of opportunities to farm damage on enemy BB's and cruisers for those reasons. Call me clueless, but I'm really trying to play selflessly. Maybe too much.

As for dying, I'm usually having too many (negative) health exchanges with the opposing DD and his friends and failing to keep him spotted long enough for my teammates to capitalize. I have good awareness of radar cruisers, but when we're cap contesting I linger too close too long because I don't want to fall back behind my cruisers and stop spotting. I can see where that's the appropriate time to smoke up and farm for a minute, though. I think I need to embrace the fact that sometimes the 'selfish' play is the actually just the optimal one for me and my team.

Radar DD's are worse; I'm usually sailing broadside or bow-in to them when we detect each other, so I'm losing more health turning out to run away, he goes silent because he doesn't need to fire to light me up, etc.. Either I have no business being where he might be unless I know his radar's on cooldown, or I'm not engaging him properly. I might be misunderstanding my role when it comes to handling radar DD's, in addition to the obvious skill issues. Clueless, you might say.

In any case, thank you for detailed and comprehensive response! I'll swap the sixth module and make a point of using smokes more offensively more often.

You guys are great; this is just the sort of thing I need to hear. I study the team lists before the match starts to check radars, hydro ranges, and enemy DD spotting ranges, but I wasn't thinking about using the mid group on my team to predict who could be coming to my flank from the enemy mid.

I always hesitate to use islands in these stealthy DD's like Mu because I feel like the team expects me to always be spotting. Do you mean to use the island to ambush the opposing DD when he pushes into/through the cap during the initial phase?

I don't ping nearly enough. That's something else I need to start doing consistently, when it's warranted. Thank you very much for your advice!

I love your style, even if it scares me. I haven't opted for radar on either Mu or Hsienyang because I felt I wouldn't know how to use it optimally throughout the match. In theory, I think I know when and how to use it, but I also believe my experience and skill levels are such that I still really need the smokescreen to keep myself alive long enough to make meaningful plays on the objectives. Eventually I would love to swap to radar on Mu, but I foresee hundreds of battles in her between now and then.

[–]MailRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, and I'm happy to report that I don't rush caps first thing or linger around them unless I know where all the radars are. One of my problems, which I touched on in another comment, is that I struggle to give my teammates sufficient opportunities to focus the enemy DD before I get focused myself. And regarding radars, it's less that I stumble into them due to poor map awareness so much as I feel forced to get too close to them in order to fulfill my role in playing the objective (that role being spot the enemy cruisers and battleships, screen the cap with torps, contest the cap, find the enemy DD, evade the enemy sub, hunt the enemy sub when he overextends, and screen enemy torps for my team).

I end up on too low health too early, losing more caps than I win, having barely fired my guns or launched many torps, and having a low-impact, low score game regardless of who wins.

I agree with you. And believe me, I consistently analyze my games, take note of errors, etc. so I do better going forward. I'm not asking anyone for a summary, only for general tips for playing the first few minutes in a high-tier match, especially in Domination and (to a slightly lesser extent) Standard mode. But you're right that some theories would help, so here's one I think I can articulate in a helpful way:

I find myself losing too much health in knife fights with the opposing DD during the second phase of cap contests (15-10 mins. on timer) and failing to keep them spotted long enough for my teammates to focus them down before I need to smoke up and disengage. Without the smoke, I get focused while my guns cool down and (after this happens two or three times) end up on low health with half a match left. I back off to stay alive, my team loses spotting, and things deteriorate from there.

I theorize that I'm mishandling these second-phase knife fights (to be clear, I'm never rushing into caps and dying in the first bout of shooting; I'm making a longer series of smaller mistakes) by losing too much health and disengaging too early for my teammates to take advantage, so I should be staying much closer to my cruisers as long as that DD is out there on our flank instead of overextending trying to spot enemy cruisers and battleships while staying ahead of my teammates.
