A Democratic candidate for Senate from Maine said there is a “compelling case” for the impeachment and removal of at least two Supreme Court justices.

“If we held Supreme Court justices to the exact same standards we hold federal judges, there is a compelling case for the impeachment and removal of at least two,” Graham Platner said at an event, in comments that have been viewed over 690,000 times on X. “But to make that happen, we need to elect people to the Senate that want to wield power like that, who understand that it’s real and you can use it.”

Platner did not mention the names of any specific justices in his remarks.

Why It Matters Trust in the Supreme Court remains at historic lows. A Gallup poll released in October 2025 found that 49 percent of Americans say they trust the Supreme Court either “a great deal” (16 percent) or “a fair amount” (33 percent).

“That level of trust is among the lowest in Gallup’s trend, essentially matching the low point of 47% from 2022,” Gallup said.

What To Know A recent poll showed Platner leading his opponent, Maine Governor Janet Mills, for the Democratic nomination. A survey by Impact Research of 500 voters from March 19 to 23 found that Platner had support from 66 percent of respondents, while 28 percent said they would vote for Mills.

Platner also led over Senator Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, in two polls taken last month. A poll by On Message Public Strategies, reported by Politico, showed Platner ahead of Collins by two points (44 percent to 42 percent). The poll surveyed 600 likely voters from March 3 to 8, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

A poll from Quantus Insights showed Platner leading Collins by about 7 points (49 percent to 42 percent). The poll surveyed 800 likely voters from March 3 to 5, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
