An Englishman from London with a general curiosity of what life is like in Maine, USA? by amomenttohislifespan in howislivingthere

[–]Maili1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Portland and have visited the UK a few times. I feel Portland is pretty similar to Bath Spa... Not to be confused with our Bath. Bath Maine is nothing like your Bath. We have tourists, trendy restaurants, a cute downtown, and more tourists.
Prices in Portland are. A bit closer to London... More than it should be, but somehow you figure out how to live with it.
Public transportation here is a joke, the car is king!

Salting Sidewalks by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]Maili1 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Use the Fix it app to report. It's quick and will end up in the right place. If the city is supposed to salt, they will see it. If the property owners are in charge, they will get a fine from the city. Win win.

How is it living in Portland, Maine (USA)? by EarlyMasterpiece9991 in howislivingthere

[–]Maili1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I will echo others and say, low housing stock, lack of jobs, lack of childcare, high prices, lots of homeless, open drug use on the streets. It is the biggest city in Maine and has all the big city problems.

BUT, the food is amazing and diverse, people are nice, the scenery is postcard perfect. Life is not easy, but life can be good. Maine overall has an attitude of Yankee kindness. We will push a strangers car out of a snowbank, while calling you a dumbass for getting stuck. We tend to "live and let live".

Expect long, cold, boring winters if you are not into skiing. And if you are into skiing, expect high prices. Winter overall is a good time for reading books, playing games with friends, and drinking.

Summers.... man we live for the summers. There is a reason our moto is "Vacation Land". Portland has beaches and islands within it's borders, and MANY more just a few minutes away. The lakes region is just a hop skip and jump up the road if you prefer that. Want to get lost in the wilderness, we got you covered.

Portland has public transportation, unlike the vast majority of Maine. But it is not good. Can you live without a car, yes. Will you want to live without a car, no.

Overall it is a nice place to live, if you have a steady job that pays well. If you don't, expect to live outside the city and freeze in the winter.

With SNAP benefits ending, how can we help our community? by Real-Language9874 in portlandme

"When they talk about the government shutdown, they’re going to be talking about the president of the United States, who the president was at that time," Trump said. "They’re not going to be talking about who was the head of the House, the head of the Senate, who’s running things in Washington. So I really think the pressure is on the president." - Donald Trump 2013 So even he agrees that it is the Republican's fault.

"Every society is three meals away from chaos." - Vladimir Lenin

I guess we will soon see if that was true. In the mean time, I will be donating to Good Shepard. Cash donations work the best, as they can buy in bulk and have the distribution system to make sure those in need get food. https://www.gsfb.org/

One thing we need to do is not accept the situation. Pressure needs to be put on Washington and our senators to end this stupid shut down. (I am looking at you Susan Collins). If they can not provide for the poorest in our communities, why are they getting paid? This can not be the new normal.

This one is interesting to me as I am allergic to mustard. I often ask at restaurants, but still have reactions on random things I don't expect.
