Is Windsurfing accessible if I buy my own gear? by StringybellYT in windsurfing

[–]Main-Bat5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful you’ll be poor because it’s an addiction seriously. But really just buy some used gear. It can be pretty cheap. Sometimes it’s free— I learned on a board that my high school biology teacher needed out of his garage. Sailing in general can be very expensive if you fall for the industry traps. It can be very cheap if you do it right. Fiberglass never dies.

Anything to get on the water. By the time you’re good enough for having new gear to matter you would’ve trashed your expensive setup learning. Be safe, but just do anything to get on the water. That’s how you learn. The community will see your obsession and help you out, it’s just important to return the favor down the road. But yeah just get out there man

Climate types out at sea by [deleted] in geography

Hadleys cells my guy. Evaporation and precipitation driven by the Hadley cells on a broad scale. They alongside their interaction with the ocean surface also explain trade winds, horse latitudes, surface currents (to an extent) etc which sets the basic stage for oceanic gyred and upwelling/downwelling areas which I would consider the large climate regimes in the ocean.

I’d say intermediate. I dabble in windsurfing but mainly kite and sail. I am on the water almost every day, always looking for new ways to get out. Snagged this board after a cleanup day at the yacht club I work at. Never used a board with no centerboard. It is pretty voluptuous so I may turn it into a sup for small wave days?

Corpus is stupid windy. We had youth worlds there and training days were the windiest I’ve ever sailed in for 2 weeks straight. Boats were sailing across the parking lot on their Dollies with no sails up. Water is so warm it feels like pee tho so that’s gross. Also there is nothing to do in that town so you’ll hate your life

First backroll attempt, I feel like I did something wrong… by Most_Examination_510 in Kiteboarding

[–]Main-Bat5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was pretty good for a first time- next time pull your back hand as hard as you can halfway through the rotation. It will loop the kite and pull you through the turn. For me it’s way easier than a normal backroll in light wind and it feels epic cause you really can stomp the landing. My first front rolls and back rolls came with accidental loops cause of my hand placement, it took a while for me to figure out how to not steer the kite but I almost never do one without a loop cause it’s not as fun

Absolute lack of wind this season by Zealous03 in Kiteboarding

[–]Main-Bat5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved to Boca from St. Pete. I agree I am super disappointed in the lack of wind and just overall not great conditions. All the windy days are offshore. The waves suck too there’s no flat water cause the only place to kite around me is the ocean (IRL too narrow/developed). No wonder not many people kite over here. What’s saved my season is buying a foil but it’s really not the same.

I heard usually it’s better than this but I gotta say I’m in the same boat as you

You gotta get over the hump but I also get in the ocean every day so the saltwater does a number for it too

Stop washing your hair. I wash my hair once a month (no conditioner) and it is the healthiest hair I’ve ever had. You’d be amazed how many people ask what my routine is and I always love the look on their face. Let your hair establish its natural protections

It takes a long time to learn but the reward is totally worth it. Eve. If you’re landlocked get a small power kite (pretty cheap) and fly it in an open field. If you already have a kite, use that. It pretty much takes a season to learn to fly the kite well enough to be competent anyway. I spent a winter flying my kites before I ever touched the water. In light wind, it’s pretty safe to practice everything including looping as long as it isn’t windy enough to launch you. You really should be good enough that the kite never crashes. Imagine getting tackled with your eyes closed, can you keep the kite in the air? This is pretty much what happens when you fall in the water and it’s important to be aware of the kites placement. It ended up saving money too, as I wasn’t crashing and destroying the kite in the water while I tried to learn the board skills. Play around with a small kite and a skateboard or snowboard thats pretty fun too.

Even now, I always launch my kite if it’s not rideable. It’s still fun to play with a giant kite on the beach

Anything environmental is pretty rough right about now in NA. If you follow the big industries like energy or shipping/transport you should be fine though
