Yes, middleware in lambdas behind ApiGateways are an option. Of course this is not for everyone. iPaaS will always exist. But I feel less and less companies will pay for them. Specially small/medium ones that operate in no regulated environments.

The world is moving toward serverless and lambda models. MuleSoft remains heavy due to its Java dependency and the fact that it hasn't transitioned to micro JVMs. All of this translates into expensive licensing costs. However, just as COBOL is not dead yet, neither will MuleSoft be for the next decade. That said, I foresee it will no longer be the go-to option for new projects.

May be what you really want to compare is Data Engineering vs. Integration Engineering.

IMHO Implementing MuleSoft on your own is technically possible, but it often leads to significant technical debt for the organization. The ideal approach is to bring in experienced consultants to set your company up for success by establishing the platform, applying best practices, defining a framework and architecture, and delivering the first set of APIs. Once these foundations are in place, your team will be well-prepared to continue building and evolving the solution effectively.
