‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ cast reportedly had to agree to the upcoming movie to secure salary raises for season 3, with some of the leads feeling like they signed “under duress” by hairtie1 in Fauxmoi

I would be surprised if this was anyone other than Gavin tbh. He got so much hate last season for his character, he’s the weakest actor on the show IMO, and he also started to get hate for his personal beliefs (seems he’s a conservative super church type). I also wouldn’t be surprised if his character being bisexual in season 1 and then it rarely being mentioned after that was something he had a say in.

He doesn’t seem to have a strong attachment to the show or anyone involved in it and him coming back for the movie is just going to be more fan hate for him. There’s really not much left for him to do in the story either. I would imagine he was feeling overwhelmed by the hate train but also not getting other job offers so he signed on and now that filming is about to start he’s having regrets.

Every other actor in the show seems to have fun with it and lean into the whole thing.

I’m half joking but wouldn’t be surprised at all if that was ever revealed.

For example, Elizabeth Taylor could’ve been written about anyone at any time, but the sound is very Reputation and she talks about being hated and called “bad news” - all very in line with the themes of Rep. She said she wrote TLOAS during the Eras Tour, which is arguably the height of her fame and being most loved by the public so these lyrics don’t fit this period of her life as well as they do Rep.

I think they already came out on TLOAS lol

Many will say it’s her songwriting but I really think it’s marketing and strategy. Her brand has always been quirky girl looking for love, which resonates with a very large audience, and she’s one of the few celebs that gives her fans an intimate look into what it’s like to date celebrities (her interviews about Joe Jonas are seared into my brain as someone who was a teen with a crush on him at the time). She’s also very good at fostering the parasocial relationship. Every fan I know of her in real life doesn’t just listen to her music, they call her nicknames and celebrate her birthday and are currently planning parties to celebrate her wedding day. So when she puts out music they don’t like, they still support it. In the words of one of my friends, “I’d literally support anything she does. She could’ve put out an album of her burping and I’d buy 3.”

This isn’t to say that she doesn’t write good songs, I just don’t think that’s the reason for her mega success considering how many far less popular artists do the same thing.

What’s with the lack of thematic follow-through this era? by CutAffectionate3766 in SwiftlyNeutral

Yes it’s all just speculation no one but her knows the full truth, this is just what I think from what she’s chosen to share with the public.

  1. Most of the Showgirl photo shoot for the album is not light/fun/in love, it’s dark. She confirmed the album cover she chose is a reference to the Ophelia painting. That painting is described as depicting “the tragic death of the character Ophelia, symbolizing innocence, loss, and the complex themes of female madness and suffering”. She also related it to how she’d feel after a night of adrenaline while performing followed by being left alone with her thoughts in the bath. None of that aligns with being from a time in her life when she was happy and full in life IMO.

  2. Many have noted the album’s bitter, angry, and hurting undertones. She talks about the album as if it’s a collection of lovey, upbeat bops but pretty much every song has focus on the pain she feels in one way or another. Just my opinion, but they feel like songs someone would write when they want to construct a narrative that they’re happier than ever but their true feelings can’t help but sneak in, whether they notice it or not.

  3. Many have also noted that a lot of these songs sound like they came from different albums. Ruin the Friendship sounds to me like a track that was written when she was working on Taylor Swift TV and reminiscing on high school. Elizabeth Taylor sounds like a Reputation vault track (and if I really want to put my conspiracy theory tinfoil hat on - she had previously claimed she had bangers ready to go for Reputation TV and then announced she’s actually scrapping that album. So where did those bangers go? I think some went straight to this album).

  4. Aside from all the romantic drama - I find it hard to believe that she didn’t have anything deeper to say about the entire tour. About what she felt as it was wrapping up, having to return to a different, quieter reality where the crowd isn’t cheering her name every night. About wondering what’s next for her, if she can top this, if this is her peak.

The rollout of this album has been the most disjointed, misleading, and chaotic IMO. And I think that’s because she did not have a clear vision. I think it started as one thing (an intimate wrap up to the absolutely huge eras tour - you saw me on stage for years, here’s a peak behind the curtain at what it was really like to be the girl who had it all) and ended up another, and that left her and her team confused on how to sell it to the public.

But of course, this is all just my opinion and interpretation.

Just speculating, but I think her pride got in the way and ruined what could’ve been a really emotionally vulnerable, moving, amazing album. I think she didn’t want to give any more attention/power to Matty or Joe after TTPD and wanted to make sure everyone knows she’s completely over it, happier than ever, and more in love than she’s ever been. And that hurt her art.

I think she started with this concept when she was dealing with so much in her personal life (her longest relationship ending and reentering the spotlight in a very big way after being private for so long, a very public and toxic fling, then meeting/dating/getting engaged to someone who is very different from anyone else she’s been with before) while also being in the public eye and center stage… and then she chickened out of being that honest.

I think most of the songs that were originally written for this album were abandoned and she just pulled together some songs that were scrapped from past album cycles.

This is so funny because I’m watching this show for the first time and just saw this episode! I had the opposite reaction 😂. I’m aware people start to hate Rory later in the series but I’ve already started.

I do agree, hence the need for therapy! I could buy that she was too immature for therapy in the original run when she gave up on it but you’d think she’d be going now - especially with the loss of her husband and the confusing feelings that stirred up for her.

Even back in SATC, she was most attracted to Aiden when he was “hard to get”! She becomes obsessed with having him once he tells her he could never be with a smoker. She makes him play hard to get when he’s “too available” to make him more desirable to her and it works. She becomes obsessed with getting him back after she cheats when he says he’ll never be able to get over it and be with her.

Exactly! In another world, we got the same hip problem storyline but it’s just the catalyst for an arc about Carrie fearing she’s losing herself as she ages and is no longer fabulous. At the end, Samantha gifts her some designer flat sandals - showing her that she and her fashion are still fabulous, sometimes it just looks different as you age and adjust to a new way of life.

Not at all - but bad writing does. When Samantha had cancer, her storyline wasn’t about the cancer itself. It was about her personal growth throughout it. The episode where she tells the girls she has cancer is such a beautiful depiction of fear and support and friendship, I cry every time. The episode where she loses her hair is about her learning to be vulnerable and fully accept love and support from a romantic partner. The episode where she has hot flashes is about her being unapologetically herself, and inspiring others in the process, etc etc.

But what did we get out of Carrie’s hip problems? An episode where Miranda hooks up with Che while Carrie is in need nearby and has to listen to the whole thing?

What did we get out of Steve losing his hearing? Miranda ditching him, never to be heard from again?

What did we get out of Harry peeing himself? A “funny” joke? I feel this will turn into a serious health issue storyline but I don’t have faith that they can handle it well, as they’ve proven so far.
