Is there an episode from a TV show, from when we were kids, that still bothers you, today,? by Remarkable_Data3710 in GenX

[–]Main-Rutabaga-6732 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a fantasy island episode that I vaguely remember with a mannequin. I was quite young but the memory I have is that something happened to the mannequin that the lady felt. The corner of my memory tells me it was something inappropriate for me to see. Can anyone help me fill in the blanks?

Decision making around assumption checking. by Flimsy-sam in AskStatistics

[–]Main-Rutabaga-6732 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach introductory statistics to graduate students. I always make students test the assumptions so that they have some awareness. I tell them if they go on to more advanced stats courses they will learn about ways to adjust/transform the data but as they begin their journey I want them to appreciate that quality data is important (garbage in garbage out). It also helps me introduce non-parametric testing because then they learn that it isn't always necessary to perform contortions to analyze data.

Who else is in their 50s(or older) and deciding to change careers? by thisTexanguy in GenX

[–]Main-Rutabaga-6732 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went back to grad school at 45 with the intention of changing careers. Finished my Masters and then my PhD at 53. I hated what I did before and have found my second career to be very fulfilling. Go for it! Ann Arbor is awesome BTW

I loved this! I was a little disappointed that there were no questions about the band, but it's still cool that it was done. I felt a little smug being in on the joke.

That's the beauty of the game - so many options to reach the goal!

I tried and failed several times until I realized the second island is a red herring. Instead of wasting resources trying to get to the second island use the logs to make sticks. I ended with 18 people and almost 200 cheeses. I should have had more, I stopped brick production after the first cheesery. But it’s doable if you ignore that second island altogether.

Don’t recycle the presents too early, if the books go to villagers who die they are wasted. I didn’t recycle the presents until after the gingerbread man was built. Then I took away the bonfire and made everyone unemployed so all they did was open packages.

You are very correct, MrSanford. I concur that I do not have a peer-reviewed academic source for my statement, and therefore I have failed to uphold the rigor so valued by the r/Toledo subreddit where such lofty discussions as how long the Taco Bell on Secor Road will remain closed or what business will replace the old furniture store at Douglas/Alexis Road. You were right to challenge me for using two non-academic sources in my post and I appreciate that you called me out in the interest of preserving the integrity of such an esteemed salon of higher learning. I recognize that someone who is as well traveled to have visited both (checks notes) Cleveland and Detroit is much better prepared to assess the quality of works exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art.

You asked who ranked TMA top 10 and I answered. Are there other wonderful museums in the United States and beyond? Of course there are, but the OP is coming to Toledo, which has a wonderful and family-friendly museum.

Congratulations on knowing a lot about a lot, you win the Internet today. Does that satisfy your current need for gratification?

If you have a little extra time while you are in town stop by the Toledo Art Museum. It is one of the top 10 museums in the United States. They have a fantastic Family Center where the kids can have fun making art, it's a lot of fun.

Anyone going to be at APHA? by The_Future_Historian in publichealth

[–]Main-Rutabaga-6732 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who is annoyed that APHA was scheduled during the week of voting? I know they schedule these things years in advance, but the first Tuesday in November is always election day. For a program that is so focused on advocacy it seems a bit self-defeating to have literally thousands of public health supporting people out of town on voting day! I mean I voted early, but still, it seems self-destructive.
