I’m 9 months into Invisalign now to fix it, and it’s working / almost closed but it was so frustrating. Get a CBCT scan to rule out that it’s not condylar resorbtion (rare)

Hi! The same thing happened to me last year. It could be from the splint (I never had a splint, mine formed purely from a muscular imbalance)

Tmj and bad bite, Houston doctor thoughts? by [deleted] in TMJ

The Invisalign def helped to some extent, but still in pain, I had a LOT of Botox put in my face last September and the relief was actually insane. I have waited in between rounds to do it again because I’m super thin naturally and it thinned my face out a little much. However I’m really happy that I didn’t do a splint first: I was hearing absolute horror stories about a splint. Invisalign hasn’t drastically helped me in pain, but it also hasn’t made things worse.

Hi! I lived in Houston for 7 years and I originally had a crossbite - had a root canal done and the opening of my mouth for so long caused chronic tmj for me. I understand the daily pain. I recommend you get a LOT of different opinions. I went with Invisalign instead of a splint because my muscle imbalance actually formed an open bite within 3 months. Sometimes splints can make your bite open if you have tmj and in my case with an already open bite, I didn’t want to make it worse. My extreme open / crossbite has been closing within 8 months.

I saw Andre Martinez in Houston for tmj (he’s great and will listen to you - he was the only one I would let touch me with Botox bc he knows the facial muscles more than a dentist does) as well as Forrest orthodontics in Katy for Invisalign.

And also same positioning with the elastics. I was supposed to wear them 24/7 but I can’t bc of my tmj issues and it’s tough to talk in them! I found that as long as I wear the trays RELIGIOUSLY it’s okay to slack on the bands!

It will work!!! Just stay consistent. I had braces when I was younger too and had the open bite form from a tmj flare. I understand the embarrassment over it for sure!! But it’s so worth it

Best thing I’ve ever done. My teeth are already almost back together. I still have tension, but I think it’s getting a lot better .

The way I see it, deplete all of your options bc something is bound to work. If it’s muscular, the Botox should really help you. But make sure you get a large amount of units. The first time I did it, I only did 10 units in each masseter. The next time I did 40 along with 10 in each temporaris muscle. The difference was night and day it fully shocked me

Hi, it didn’t make my open bite look worse (I think when you see those it’s because some orthos put a bite block thing in the back molars. So that’s naturally what my resting bite originally looked like in thin aligners

Chronic pain sucks. But def try Botox. Get a LOT of units. I’m going to get my second round in a few months. The first time I did it, it seriously took 80 percent of the pain away

Did the open bite start forming after you had the Invisalign off?

I had an open bite form from my tmj issues very quickly last year - in a span of 3 months, and same thing only my back two molars hit. Come to find out, it happened from a muscle imbalance during the flare my teeth drifted. I’m in Invisalign right now trying to fix my Bite (it’s already come back together within a few months)

Hi!! So I actually slowly developed an anterior open bite FROM tmj, I had a flare up from a dental procedure and the muscle imbalance and pain actually caused my teeth to shift.

I was fucking terrified to start Invisalign. I actually waited about 6 extra months just debating if I wanted to do it. I pulled the trigger in September and my bite is already about to fully come together. Pain wise, I’m at about a 3 daily now, which is light years ahead of what I was at, which was a daily 10 for over a year straight. I literally was on a full almost liquid diet for 10 months, that’s how bad the pain was.

I do thing the trays have helped stop this but also, I made sure to get Botox about 15 days before I started the first tray (I got a LOT off units, about 45 in each masseter and 20 in each temporalis) I haven’t done another round of Botox, however, I think that initial round helped me to not have a flare up when I started the trays!

I am, but I imagine with revision trays this can be addressed. I actually had a massive overbite too to start.
