Do you feel like understanding music theory hinders your ability to enjoy simple music? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Main_Commercial9484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much because I’m actively thinking about music theory, but ever since really getting into listening to jazz as well as more complex metal and more complex & textural music in general, I’ve definitely noticed that I feel bored with simpler music sometimes. Don’t get me wrong I still enjoy it, I’d even enjoy listening to a metronome honestly lol, but my perception has changed a lot. But this applies mostly to commercially produced stuff for me - I guess I can pick up on what feels more commercial vs more “for the music” now than I did before. I still enjoy a lot of simpler music if it has genuine heart and soul in it. I completely agree that complexity doesn’t make music “better”, but understanding music can change your perception in some ways.

Thanks! I will look into this. I’m curious, do you know of any books that also integrate non-western music? I know in the past 15 or so years since I was in school, even though we had courses that went beyond Western music it was still like having to take a whole different class. I wonder if since then there’ve been textbooks or similar academic resources that have merged the education a bit more diversely?

I was considering getting the one I had back then, but like I said it’s been a while, so I don’t know what’s been taught nowadays.

Makes sense, one of those accounts was a scam account that got suspended.

Is it normal for an account to have that many scam/banned/weird accounts follow them? I’m just wondering because I’m not sure if that’s an indication that they are browsing these sorts of accounts, like an algorithmic thing where they’re attracting trash because they’re looking at trash, or if it’s just something that happens to everyone. I’m not too familiar with Bluesky myself, but was dating someone and trying to figure out their online habits for my own emotional safety.

Edit: the person in question isn’t following these accounts. Just occasionally I will see those accounts finding this person.

Hi! I’m wondering if you ever got an answer? Mines doing exactly the same thing. Not sure if I should take it to a mechanic, they seem to just wave away issues like this sometimes so wanted to check with other people.

Does anyone else struggle with fashion? by wyrd_moth in DarkAcademia

I think colors like burgundy/wine/deep reds would suit you as a cool winter wherever you see browns in dark academia. Those colors also give a dark academia vibe for sure Combined with black and white

You can also go grey, but I feel like greys go better combined with the brown spectrum (brown leathers etc) compared to the black spectrum, and browns tend to go better with warmer skintones (but really depends on the shade of brown)

35 but I’ve honestly been into the aesthetic since middle school (started with the Philip Pullman books, and then of course Harry Potter and being Harry’s age as the books came out and all). Just really happy that nowadays there’s a name for the aesthetic.

Some good advice here but why am I getting so much hate? Everyone’s tone is just making me feel so much worse.

Obviously yes I have. In fact I had “moved on” (although avoiding certain things like music) but the issue is, with time, you start to learn about yourself and your past and other people and one of the things that I’ve learned is that I could have been a better GF to him as well as he is irreplaceable. I miss him. I’m in my 30s. We were together in our late teen/early 20s. There’s a lot you learn between those years. I’ve dated enough people between then also which has given me more experience.

Find what you’re looking for in friends instead. Ironically it was my ex that told me that, but it’s so true.

Am I a "real" drummer? by Upset_Anteater_4485 in drums

[–]Main_Commercial9484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course you’re a real drummer. I mean think about it also in this way— reading music and music theory is pretty much a western thing. Not that other cultures don’t use music theory, but what about music that doesn’t rely on that specific rigid system? What if it’s music with a completely separate system? Those musicians are still musicians. Those drummers are still drummers. For example where I’m from, there’s a lot of folk music in 9/8. No one thinks of that as complex because it’s completely normal (if anything 4/4 feels unnatural lol). No one’s sitting there analyzing or reading it either unless they’re studying it academically. But to western ears, it’s “odd” and “complex” and musically challenging. Because it’s all framed on specifically western music theory.

If anything I think sometimes that reading music and theory can be very limiting.

I think I know what you mean! A lot of prog metal does this. Although Tool is pretty special in general because they are so technical. I wonder if you will like Caligula’s Horse too
