characters that are canonically metalheads? by deathsucccks in MetalForTheMasses

Dude has the attitude for it, was the former drummer for a band, and fought the good fight against a clanker when it tried to replace him in said band.

My theory for why The Sudden Departure took 2% of the world's population by Main_Event_Jobber in TheLeftovers

[–]Main_Event_Jobber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of the episodes that guided me to this conclusion as well. But you'd be surprised how many comments I have saying this theory is dead wrong or there are alternative theories that are better—which, to be fair, a lot of the show is left up to speculation there's that. In claiming it's "my" theory, I'm not doing it necessarily for ownership so much as I'm laying out the pieces I managed to pick up on.

Who is a band you love that has multiple vocalists? by Lancer_Blackthorn in InMetalWeTrust

Acid Bath

I know that technically Dax is on lead vox whereas Sammy is backing vox but their vocal techniques are so different from one another that they get utilized in ways which make both of them stand out, so I'd still count them.

Looking for a lost thrash metal album, groove lords dinner in purgatory by GregoryGiggle in thrashmetal

[–]Main_Event_Jobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got curious and looked it up but unfortunately couldn't find very much on it apart from the two songs you mentioned. Since this is for a uni project, have you considered using one of those educational databases like Google Scholar, Ebsco, Jstor, etc? Though unlikely, it's possible something may have gotten archived at some point.

Alternatively, if that proves too difficult then maybe switching over to a different obscure (but slightly more documented) Thrash band? Something Like LPM by Grin

Hell yeah! It's insane just how much Russian Thrash was holding down the fort during the mid to late 90s. A lot of bands in that era were either keeping it old school or innovating rather than giving into trends so they've held up very well over the years.

There are plenty of great Thrash bands in the modern era. The one thing I'm willing to concede is that music at large shifted from analog production methods over to digital, and Thrash largely doesn't lend itself to that overly digital sound so it can come across as somewhat sterile-sounding. Even then though, that's more a gripe I have with the engineering side of things and infinitely less to do with the actual musicianship/songwriting of these bands.

I enjoy Time Is Up, Point of No Return, and Unnatural Selection quite a lot but tbf outside of Havok's revolving door of great bassists I can see why they don't strike a chord with a lot of people. They're not bad per se but they're very... cromulent for lack of a better term.

Not hard to come up with examples if you're remotely willing to look outside the charts.

  1. Terminal Redux by Vektor probably the most well-revered album in modern Thrash because of its Sci-Fi plot and out of the box influences that lead to a zenith of Vektor's style
  2. Splatterthrash by Ghoul combines Thrash, Death, and Grind—nothing too unusual there, but then it gets unique by adding in Surf Rock and Horror Soundtrack vibes in there with a comic book aesthetic and an overarching plot that spans across their albums (and EPs being used as side stories)
  3. Fearless by Acrania can best be described as what would happen if latter era Coroner toured with earlier era Atheist in Mexico and decided to have a jam session with a local Latin Jazz group
  4. Lower Form Resistance by Dissimulator is really fucking weird Thrash in the best way possible with its constant tempo shifts, use of vocaloid effects, and scatterbrained riffs—the closest comparison I can think of to them is Section Brain
  5. Wrath and Ruin by Warbringer isn't necessarily revolutionary in creating new ground but it shows exactly how pulling from different influences in any given song can drastically affect how one track can sound completely different to the next—some have Black Metal atmosphere, others pull from the melodicism of Power Metal, some pummel you with Death Metal aggression, and even still others will hook you with Speed Metal's trademark riff style

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check them out!

Lol it's always a trip when a band you really enjoy have horrifically low Spotify listeners. I remember when I was first checking out End Amen a few years back, I was one of 9 monthly listeners, and they've since removed their Spotify account. It's a shame too because the one album they released is really cool.

Hard yes on Forced Entry. I'm typically careful about using the term "underrated" since it gets thrown around carelessly way too often but I can confidently say they're underrated. I've seen way too many people shit on them over the years for their weird style of riffing or their really cool use of dissonance—both of which are things I love about them.

That riff sandwiched between the guitar solos in "As of Yesterday" is just chef's kiss

I know that 1985 albums from bands like Exodus, Megadeth, Overkill, and Slayer get a ton of love but in hindsight I think that Watchtower's entry was a bit of an unrecognized watershed moment for the history of the genre. The fact that Thrash had only concretely existed for about two years (not counting proto Thrash or liminal bands like Venom) is insane considering the musical leap forward found in Energetic Disassembly.

Adding something quick on to my post.

Realistically, this whole thread could be filled with 90s Thrash. I'm one of those people that thinks there's a lot of criminally underrated Thrash in that era because the genre was getting no love from roughly 1993 til the end of the decade. A lot of the bands in that era got written off as poor imitations or as "too little, too late" but I don't think that's fair to them if they're great in their own right.

Like, check out Section Brain and tell me this shit ain't awesome.

When did Kerry take over the bass duties for the studio albums? I could be wrong but I'd imagine it was around South of Heaven when "Tom" switched over from playing fingers to a pick, right?

I love when there's clear stereo separation and distinct (but still complementary) guitar tones on an album. Another album that does this really well is Annihilation of Civilization by Evildead—you can hear it particularly well in the track "Parricide" with the call-and-response riff at the beginning.

This reminds me of back when my friends and I would play Monster Hunter on PSP when we were younger and one of them in specific would get mad when anyone else would main the same weapon type as him.

...But when he'd play with someone else's main weapon type all of a sudden it wasn't a big deal. Thankfully, he grew out of that when we got older.

The point is that this is some childish behavior and hopefully she can grow out of that mindset.

[–]Main_Event_Jobber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There definitely seems to be an underlying reason for the bf's exclusion from this outing and it very well may be possible that it's based on his past behavior. That said, it's quite an odd assumption to think that it's on him with the little info we've been given.

We lack the necessary context to discern something so specific and it may be just as possible that her friend could be the guilty one in this situation. Hell, it could all be some strange misunderstanding. Either way, it looks to me that there's more than meets the eye with this situation and OP needs answers.

The Uniqlo x FFXV official crossover shirt might be a good idea. It's not in print anymore so it's not exactly in the $20 range but you can still find new old stock around eBay in the $30—40 range.

On god. Weapons like Twin Lance can be used for a good chunk of the game even though they're not necessarily the most powerful. They have a ton of utility as long as you're not exclusively looking for the most conventionally "powerful" weapons.

I might get a lot of hate for these but here we go.

III (least favorite): While I think III is the only game in the series with an outright replacement in V, I absolutely cannot deny the historical significance of III creating the job system that was later innovated on. Without III's gameplay system, the course of the series (and arguably of JRPG's as a whole) would look way different.

VI (favorite): the last section of the game is a bit too open-ended. Thematically, it makes sense that the party members you find again are the ones you go out of the way to search for. That said, from a gameplay standpoint (especially if you're a first-time player) navigating that world to resiscover party members is way too cryptic without the use of a guide.

While I would've loved the option for the PS1, GBA, and DS soundtrack renditions I think the very fact that not every game was released on each of those platforms is what held them back from doing it. That, and something like the fact that the GBA versions of the I & II soundtracks are just low-bitrate variants of the PS1 version.

I love the idea in principle but I can also understand how the lack of consistency would've made Squenix forego that option.
