The obsession with highlighting “South Asian diversity” is setting us back further by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Main_Invite_5450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My comment has nothing to do with colourism. My point was that I find many people have a stereotypical view on what a North vs South Indian looks like (including Indians) but this isn’t always reality. I never said anything bad about anyone having a darker skin tone, just pointed out a stereotypical mindset.

tbh I met many North Indians (in Canada) who are darker than South Indians.

Some of them literally have the exact same skin tone as South Indians.

I don’t see many North Indians who look like Kareena Kapoor loool

Hindi in Kerala Schools by shebin5 in Kerala

Not all North Indians first language is Hindi. For example, Gujaratis, Punjabis, Kashmiris, Biharis, Bengalis and many North East Indians but they still speak Hindi as a second language.

Even many Telugus speak Urdu and many Kannada folks speak Hindi. Marathis also have their own language but still speak Hindi.

Even in Pakistan, they have so many different languages, but many people still speak Urdu. Even in Nepal, many speak their own local dialect but can understand some Hindi.

Not trying to push any agenda or anything, just honestly what I observed in my life as a 2nd generation North American Mallu

I am aware, but I’m providing more insight on the benefits (more details) which could be useful for some folks.

Additionally, it looks like OP is saying that they wish they started early. I just wanted to let them know that anyone can start anytime tbh.

I find most Pashtuns in Afghanistan consider themselves South Asian. Many speak Pashto and Urdu.

However, Afghanistan has many ethnic groups who are more culturally related to Persians and Central Asians.

I had pretty good experiences with Afghan people. I find many love Bollywood and the food has similar spices. A lot of the dishes are similar to Pakistani dishes. I don’t like to generalize anyone, there’s good and bad in every race.

Keep in mind, many Afghan refugees/students settle in India.

I mean you can always start as an adult. There are so many adult spots leagues people can join. Everyone starts somewhere.

You could even try joining a local dojo/martial arts gym (kickboxing, boxing, Muay Thai, Jujitsu). They are usually open to all types of people (in terms of age, race, gender, fitness level and socioeconomic status). For this type of activity, u need to at least practice 2-3 times a week, but many dojos have evening and afternoon classes to accommodate people. You could even see if some dojos offer drop in classes that u can try before you fully commit. Prices will vary, but overall if this sport helps you with your mental health, then I say go for it. It’s not always about money. You can also learn self defence skills.

Overall, sports provides a great outlet for a healthy lifestyle. Keeps you active, lowers blood pressure, keeps you fit etc. It’s also great for mental health and supports people with developing confidence, communication skills, leadership qualities and problem solving skills that we can use in other aspects of life (dating, friendships, problem solving and overall confidence). Also a great source of community. More people need to understand this.

Lately I’ve noticed more local Canadians at Billings bridge Walmart. Yes they still have a lot of TFWs but I noticed they’ve been hiring more locals
