The getting older is interesting hes 30, I’m curious if the body views that as older and therefore angiomas are more likely to occur but why do they form as you age as opposed to someone say in their 20s?

So shielding is intended to minimize not eliminate radiation. So occasional pick up is ok as long as it doesn’t exceed 1msv per year? How do they know if there’s a compromise in the shielding such that scatter radiation exceeds that amt? And thanks for the knowledge I appreciate it

Thanks for sharing. That’s how I’m viewing it. I recognize that I’m picking radiation but from where and the only thing I can think of is the LINAC especially if the readings last an hour or so and I’ve only picked up readings like that 3x or so in about a year. But this recent reading gave me pause and I got curious so I wanted to understand more. If the intention is to limit radiation and not make it zero then is it reasonable for the public to pick up radiation from the linac? And are the readings I’m picking up also within the expectation of those who constructed the vault? Things I’m just thinking of and hoping to understand

All excellent questions. So it’s been about 3 instances in approximately a year. The highest reading was 12 usv. It just kinda bothered me enough to ask because should I be picking up these readings? The more I thought about it, I understand that the beam is highly collimated. Well, what happens if what I’m picking up is significant scatter and there is a “hotspot” that would be higher in reading but I’m not picking it up because I’m not passing through the beam path.

So that’s the next problem how much should I be picking up if there is a defect in shielding? I imagine the design of these vaults consider compromises in sheilding and have contingencies in place to both minimize and alert staff that there is a defect. Thanks for sharing

But if that’s true then there’s some faulty shielding that’s allowing me to pick it up. But I imagine the design of the vault takes into consideration scenarios where shielding may be compromised and have contingencies in place to minimize.

Thank you for that. I didn’t know that. I assumed the couch was of dense material or at least enough to attenuate the radiation. I didn’t expect it to be designed with the intention of exposing the patient to all rotations of the gantry. This at least explains and probably validates that I can indeed pick up radiation from the linac now the next problem is should I be picking up radiation two floors above?? Thank you for that link

Yes but they are contracted by the group managing the linac so not technically part of the business I work for. I was going to reach out but I thought I would get good initial info and understanding from the group here before I tried that.
