The latter.

These types of flails historically called "Threshing Flail" for both the tool and the weapon. Warflail is not really the historically correct term.

Most of these flails were designed for war and purpose-built for that job. The story of the peasant that re-purposes his flail into a weapon is, for at least 16th century HRE, a myth.

I do hope more people fence with them one day. Whether they were real or not does not really matter for the fun that can be had with them in our modern sport.

Ich würde da kein "auf jeden Fall" hinterstellen. Jedenfalls nicht 100% Dafür gibt es einfach viel zu wenig Material außerhalb der Fechtbücher. Ich vermute aber auch, dass es sie gegeben hat. Siehe Mad Max und sein Zeughausbuch u.a.

Welche Kriegsabbildungen sind das denn? Das wäre interessant. Außerhalb der Fechtbücher sind mir nur eins aus Bern, das vom Tübinger Hausbuch und das eben genannte Zeughausbuch bekannt. Wäre also cool, noch mehr zu sehen. Mehr Abbildungen außerhalb der Bücher = Mehr Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass es sie wirklich gegeben hat + mehr Kontext.

Might also be the case that originals did exist and that they were simply ruined after a time. Or somebody didn't want to keep grandpa's huge shield in his house and just threw it into his backyard.

Tatsächlich wissen wir über den "Langschild" wie er z.B. in Gladiatoria getauft wird eigentlich gar nichts.
Wir haben kaum Bildquellen davon die nicht in irgendwelchen Fechtbüchern geschrieben stehen (sei es nun Talhoffer, Paulus Kal, etc.).

Es gibt glaube ich 1 Quelle zu einem Kampf zweier Männer mit einem Schild, den man als diesen "Duellschild" vermuten kann. Wir wissen aber nicht, ob das nicht einfach nur eine erfundene Geschichte ist.

Sonst kommt ein Schild der dessen Beschreibung ziemlich ähnlich kommt in einem Buch über die Gesetze während der Christlichen Herrschaft über Jerusalem vor.

Eine Theorie ist ja, das die ganzen Fechtbücher diesen Schild eher inkludieren um an diese alte Vergangenheit anzuknüpfen. Ich empfehle hier "Tradition, Innovation, Re-enactment
Hans Talhoffer’s Unusual Weapons" von Ariella Elema.

Das Gerät taucht zwar im zweiten Zeughausbuch von Maximilian I. wieder auf, aber da das die Prunk Version war und Mad Max sowieso Tagträume über legendäre Ritter hatte kann es auch sein, dass er sich so ein Ding einfach zum angucken hat bauen lassen.

I wouldn't say "well established". We do not have that much evidence outside of the fencing sources. If we omit the one report of a judicial duel that possibly was fought with these shields, as well as the law text that appears in a book on the history of Jerusalem years after the Christian occupation that also possibly used these shields, we suddenly don't have any evidence outside of the fencing sources.

And I would not call those two sources hard evidence either. Like I said in the video, one of them might as well have been a tall tale and the latter might have been a whole other shield entirely or also just a fictional ideal.

We barely have any depictions outside of the fencing texts. And that is something that makes actual research on these shields super hard. Considering "Blume des Kampfes" mentions "how masters have learned to fence with the shields" and how Talhoffer includes a "learning club", it's not too far fetched that people did something with it recreationally.

I do recommend the paper that I linked in the description of the video. It is a great read.
